Celebrated a friend's birthday at Hat Yai and it was a clear favorite with the table! We ordered the hat yai for 4, which comes with roti curry and sticky rice and the star of the show, the fried chicken. We also wanted to try the brisket curry, southern pad thai and a few cocktails (hat yai daiquiri, coconut mango horchata, pandas gin and tonic, lychee slushy). The horchata was teh clear favorite. Listen - I could drink a gallon of the curry, so so good lol! The roti is served piping hot and is the perfect texture for dipping. My only complaint is that I could've eaten more roti :) All the entrees came out pretty quickly. The pad thai was also delicious and was served with some spicy pork rinds - such a wonderful treat, those things are addicting. The brisket curry was melt in your mouth, the meat is so tender it falls apart with each bite. The fried chicken - chefs kiss. I'd come back again and again just for the fried chicken. They don't take reservations which is why we ate a little earlier than normal. By 6:30pm there was a line out the door. Super causal walk up order and pay. Vibe is great!

I love this place and wanted to give it 5 stars but I can't for two reasons. 1) I love the half chicken, curry and roti, but every single time I have gotten it delivered it has been cold and the box/packaging has been open because they don't tape it closed properly so this isn't the driver. I have attached pictures from two seperate days/orders but it has happened 4-5 times so it's an ongoing issue. Package your food better to go!! 2) the chicken breast was pretty dry last time I ordered but generally speaking the food tastes amazing and it could be dry because I had to reheat it due to 1) above.

Thai fried chicken is non-existent where I'm from but coming back to PDX for a work trip, I knew I had to make it back out for this. Parking is a bit of a pain for this location, but the food is exceptional, service is fast. The fried chicken is legendary and it's great. Super juicy, tender, crisp, flavorful and covered in fried shallots, it's unique and delicious. I got it in the combo and that means sticky rice (woohoo), roti (woohoo), curry (woohoo) and pickled vegetables, which is a necessary palate cleanser between super flavorful bites. You can kinda eat and dabble around the plate however you like, but I would argue the super best bite is taking the chicken skin and dipping it in the curry. The roti is well fried and crisp, flaky and not too greasy and the curry has great flavor, depth and mild. The sticky rice soaks up everything and has some good chew too.If you go as a group, the family packs are a lot of food for good pricing.

Tasty Thai food. There is a decent selection on their menu from their famous fried chicken to braised chicken/pork, and even specials items. They also have vegan options and pad Thai. I really enjoy the sticky rice, and curry. The curry is sweet, not spicy. There is also a nice selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. The service is great. The prices are reasonable. Indoor and outdoor seating. Street parking only and it can be a bit hard to find parking in this area sometimes.

I really wanted to like this place. I love roti, curry, and fried chicken so this place looked promising, but I left kind of disappointed. The place is definitely fast casual, where you order and grab a number. When the food came out it looked delicious and I was excited to dig in. The fried chicken was tasty and moist, but I missed the fried batter of standard fried chicken. The roti and curry was where I was most disappointed, the roti was denser than i was used to and the curry tasted like a red Thai curry, which is fine, but I was imagining a roti canai type dish, so the flavors just weren't right for me. I like red curry, but I think milder yellow curry works better with roti. And the roti would have been better if it were lighter and fluffier. The pickles and sticky rice in the dish were ok.

Great fried chicken, great thai rice, great curry sauce, great cumin pork, all around great food!Yet another great find in Portland, who would have figured that thai fried chicken was so good. The dish had fried chicken, the spices were different from anything I've had before and it was great. The cumin pork was seasoned well and cooked wonderfully. The thai rice was a bit dry which made it stick together a bit more. All and all this was pretty darn good food.

Deliciously amazing chicken and duck curry. I went in thinking the curry was PNW spicy but it actually had a huge kick! Very into it. The chicken was very crispy and delicious, especially with the sauce

We arrived on the Fourth of July, only to find the restaurant closed. We returned the next day as I wasn't going to leave Portland without checking the fried chicken leg with malayu curry and roti off of my list. This fast-casual spot, where you order at the front and the food is brought to your table by order number, has a young, fun, hippie vibe to it. Our host was super sweet. My friend asked to substitute the fried chicken leg for a chicken skewer, and even though it wasn't on the menu, she made a one time exception. Thank you!!The flavors of the food were definitely top-notch. However, since the curry is premade in bulk, mine was cold by the time my friend's food arrived. Despite this, the overall experience was a good one!

When I'm feeling like Thai but want something more interesting than the usual pad thai or panang curry, I go to Hat Yai. On the normal menu, my go to is the spicy pork basil - definitely spicy and I love that! On my most recent visit, I noticed that they have a lot more specials now, as big as the normal menu (which is pretty small). I tried beef cheek in a turmeric based curry and it's definitely something I never tasted before! The beef cheek was so tender it just melts in your mouth. The curry is .... different but not bad. I even found some stinky beans in it which floored me. Being for SE Asia I know this bean and it's definitely an acquired taste (even in Asia) and I was surprised they added it in the curry.I always like to try something new so I'm going to watch out more for their specials next time I come here.

The chicken was cooked nicely but there was an odd flavor on it. Not sure what kind of seasoning it was but I wasn't sure if I liked it. The roti was good and the curry was great. I had a mango coconut horchata that was really good.
