Loved the ambiance, food, and service! This was my first time eating a more traditional Indonesian dinner and I'm so glad I did it here because everything was delicious. With the help of a friend from Singapore, she made sure we ordered the right mix of dishes to share. The entire meal shared between 3 people was perfect - about 6 dishes. On a Tuesday night at 7pm there wasn't a wait for a table so not to worry about reservations unless you're a quite large party. But coming from NYC we are used to filled tables every night of the week.

Ever since I went to Amsterdam and ate at an Indonesian rice table I have been looking in the US for one to replicate my experience. The prefix menu was absolutely delicious! The portions may be small, but the amount of food is so filling! Definitely make a reservation a few weeks in advance when they open them up.We love the decor, especially for Halloween. The bathroom was a crazy experience filled with rainbows and unicorns. The staff were so friendly and did a great job at guiding you through the menu and culinary experience. The price is a little steep per person.

I have been here a few times and have enjoyed Beverly visit. On my last visit I got the chef's menu, which has so many delicious components- and it's a lot of food for about $80p/p;Everything was very very tasty; the only things I couldn't eat were the roti and the dessert donuts (they were a bit oily, in an unpleasant way).Service is fantastic, and the flavors here are really unmatched. As far as ambience, Gado Gado is a great date spot with excellent drinks and exciting food.

Did the Rice Table for $89 a person. To sum it up: there were a lot of flavors going on... too much! There was curry here, cardamon there, anchovy here, coconut there...so much going on! And it was confusing that they gave you 5 additional condiments on the side to enhance as needed. The individual dishes were already flavored fine.To me, standouts were the Beef Rendang, Herb Omelet, Zucchini & Corn Fritters, and that amazing Roti. Rice was needed to tame the strong flavors of all the dishes (which do arrive to the table at once).Dishes were good. I thought the charge was a little high for the quantity they give. It didn't seem like I was getting a $300 meal for a table of 3. We enjoyed it, but I felt there was too much going on.

Every dish was nicely composed and had great taste! The beef rendang was a bit salty for me, but nothing too bad. The papaya salad was great (might be spicy to some) although my dad did not enjoy the mango in it. he's a papaya salad purist I guess. The roti had a great texture and the chutney it came with was delicious. I forget the exact flavors of the dessert (it seems like the menu rotates, which I love!) but it was delicious, although a teeny bit oily/dense. A bouncier, more doughnut like texture wouldve been great.

Once again, looking for a restaurant that offered outdoor seating so we could bring the Princess. We came across Gado Gado. Our experience with Indonesian food is limited to the few dishes offered by Fikscue BBQ in Alameda, CA. The prix fix Rice Table looked intriguing. Not inexpensive to be sure but what a way to experience a cuisine that you're not really familiar with! There are two outdoor seating areas. One at the front of the parking lot near the sidewalk. The other to the left side facing the restaurant. We wanted to sit near the restaurant because it looked like it would be free from the sun earlier than the other section. We were told we could sit there but we had to vacate the table by 6:30 for a reservation. It was 5:00 at the time and 1.5 hours seemed like it should be sufficient. Of course, our pace would be at the mercy of the kitchen, so everyone had to cooperate. The Rice Table is a meal that everyone at the table must participate in. Since there were only the two of us and the dog (she doesn't get to vote), it was an easy decision. One of the staff members brought out a bowl of water and a few shrimp chips to keep the Princess happy. I gave her the shrimp chips a bit at a time and the last piece just as we finished our meal. There are so many components to the Rice Table menu. Everything that is pictured below came with our meal. Some reviewers have said that the portions were tiny and some of the items were listed separately to make the menu seem more robust. Others said that they didn't feel that they got good value for the cost of the meal. Another thing to consider is how much work goes on in the kitchen to prepare this meal for just two diners. It would be much more time efficient with more diners. Our opinion is that the Rice Table is fairly priced, and the food quantity is sufficient. Yes, many of the appetizers are one or two bites, but there are several of them. I did question the names of some of the dishes because I couldn't taste some of the listed flavors. At the same time, there was nothing that I didn't like. An example is Oma's Clove Scented Coconut Rice. The description lists coconut, turmeric, pandan and fried shallot. Nowhere does it mention Clove other than in the name. Maybe the cloves were present when the rice was being cooked and then removed before being served. House PIckles - 5 - a great palate cleanser to prepare you taste buds for the flavors to come. Sambal - 3 - we're neutral on the four sauces that were to accompany whatever our hearts desired. Being novices, we wanted to taste the dishes as they came from the kitchen before adjusting the flavors. As it was, we enjoyed each dish so much that we didn't use the Sambal. Panipuri - 5 - the presentation was attractive and the flavor even better. Zucchini & Corn Fritter - 5 - Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, flavor throughout! Running the fritter through the romesco was definitely a must.Chicken Satay - 4 - the chicken was moist and tender. The crispy rice added another dimension to the texture.Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai - 5 - I was looking for Lop Cheung but didn't find any. That didn't make the Siu Mai any less desirable. Roti Canai - 5 - I'm a huge fan of Roti, especially Roti Telur, which has egg in. While I'm used to dipping my Roti into Yellow Curry. Gado Gado presents the Blistered Heirloom Tomato Curry as the dip. It is super yummy! I didn't even miss the yellow curry. Oma's Clove Scented Rice - 5 - nothing works better with saucy dishes as fluffy rice that has it's own flavor and is ready to absorb more. Blistered Heirloom Tomato Curry - 5 - perfectly seasoned and ready to add another dimension to the Roti Canai. Coconut Clam Curry - 5 - This is the dish that I finished the rice with. I love all three main components of this dish individually and combined just made them extra special. The clams were plump and cooked perfectly. Ayam Kecap - 5 - this has a be considered soul food in Indonesia. I can see this dish along with rice being all that's served for dinner. According to Wikipedia, this dish usually contains sweet soy sauce marinated chicken. I didn't miss the chicken.Wok Fired Herbal Omelet - 5 - My wife, who doesn't really care for eggs, loved this dish. Need I say more?Sumatran Style Beef Rendang - 5 - On appearance, this dish looked soooo dry. In actuality, it was very moist, tender and wonderful. Now I wish I had't finished the rice so soon. Orange Cardamom Apple Cider Donuts - 5 - Why have more desserts on offer when you already have the perfect one for most people? These Donut hole like morsels had an crunchy outer crust like an old fashion donut, soft fluffy cake inside and came with a Kaya Jam (coconut) dipping sauce. The only possible improvement might have been ice cream. I would have asked, but alas, we were out of time. Yes, yes, yes, we would dine here again. And maybe even get the Rice Table again because it was so good and filling!

We came to Gado Gado to celebrate a friend's birthday with a gigantic group (we had to have three different reservations for the group size). The staff were incredibly accommodating and sat us at nearby booths, and were incredibly friendly throughout our time in the restaurant.Due to our group size, despite our dietary restrictions (vegetarian), we were able to order the majority of the vegetarian items on the menu. The staff even specially made the pani puri which was normally part of a more restricted ordering requirement. Unfortunately, one of our friends had really hyped up Gado Gado, and while we definitely enjoyed our food, we did not leave being blown away. The food is good, and to be fair, a few of our friends who ordered the same items (such as the roti) were much more impressed than we were - so it may have been inconsistency in cooking the items. From the pani puri (awesome presentation, okay taste) to the pakora, the food was good, but not absolutely mind blowing. What the food does not carry in flavor, the staff make up for, and is still worth visiting if you have time while in Portland.

Went to try their big rice table dinner for $85/person and was pretty disappointed and went back once more to try a few things from the a la carte menu but still felt still felt underwhelmed and it was too pricey for the quality & quantity. The rice table while sounding pretty elaborate and looks like a lot of food on the menu, many of those "courses" are tiny sides like pickles is one, sambal is another, roti is one and the curry the roti should come with is another. There seemed to be only one main entree out of them, the Sumatran Beef Rendang which we thought was just kind of salty and plain. The clove rice was maybe what we enjoyed the most (a separate course of course). Even if it was a bit less than $85/person, I still would've left unsatisfied as I felt there wasn't anything truly delicious I had even if nothing was that bad. When we went back we tried a few more things a la carte:- the tartare: way too sauced, almost like an overly dressed tuna poke even though it was supposed to be dry aged steak.- shrimp shiu mai: decent, tho half the portion you would get at any dim sum place and same quality/flavor.- Roti w/ tomato curry: good but also still too expensive. The roti was really good: flaky and buttery but still fluffy but they only give you 1 piece. The blistered tomatoes added a nice flavor to the curry. But at Hat Yai, the same amount of curry plus four times the amount of roti (which is the correct amount for that amount of curry) costs $6 whereas here it costs $16.- Cloce rice: once again the favorite part of our meal.

Excellent prix fixe menu; well prepared and plated entrees. The courses complement each other nicely. $85 in 2023. Their cocktails are wonderful. Recommend Not a factor in their review, but I'd prefer they raise their prices 2% rather than tack on a 2% employee surcharge. I was never a fan of the Comcast model of service fees.

We had a fantastic business meal at Gado Gado in Portland. The unique and welcoming queer vibe of the restaurant made for a refreshing and enjoyable atmosphere. We ordered the beef rendang, pani puri, and grilled chicken satay--each dish was absolutely delicious. The beef rendang was tender and richly spiced, the pani puri offered a delightful burst of flavors, and the chicken satay was perfectly grilled with a savory peanut sauce. The combination of the food, ambiance, and excellent service made for an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a memorable dining spot in Portland!
