Quick Summary:- Most memorable place I ate in Portland, if you're a fan of fish dishes highly recommend- Casual dining atmosphere with high quality cuisine- Freshest quality fish ever tastedThroughout my visit in Portland, I went to many restaurants and this one, Fish & Rice, stood out to be the best place I have ever eaten. Months have passed as I write this review, and the memory is solid with positive aura. If I had the power, I would live in Portland just to eat Fish & Rice. This restaurant, from the exterior and interior, a very casual style. Simplistic furnishing of tables and chairs, natural colored decor, and for some (nice reason that tickles the gamer in me), a nostalgic gaming console. Inside, the interior is spacious, there is a pickup corner and an ordering corner. I do have to admit, I didn't know where to start.Thankfully, the staff noticed my confusion and they helped us. Later, when observing local guests, the moment they entered the restaurant they took a seat. If we were planning to order for takeout, we could order in the style we have done, which was go to the counter on the right. After doing the unorthodox by making our order at the takeout style but sitting at the tables to eat, we took a seat at the table closest to the food pickup table. My relative ordered the tuna poke bowl and I, who got curious and a fan of yellowtail, chose the kama. I've never had it before, so that piqued my interest. The dishes came at once, and the staff explained where the fish was sourced from. At this stage, I realized that this is no ordinary casual restaurant, when the ingredients are carefully explained. Our first bite we glanced at each other; we were blown away on the freshness of the fish. If I were to compare the freshness, it was as clear as fresh water. So clean, no faint fish or sea like after-taste lingered. I tried a little of the poke, and I would say this might be the best poke I have ever had in my life so far.For the kama, this was the perfect fish oil, and the meat was so tender on any area I ate on the fish. There is a large bone on this kama, but because it's so large it was easy to pick the meat off (the meat slid right off with just chopsticks). While the photo I took looks like the kama is small, it is a pretty big serving size. The rice bowl is a lot too, so I was content full with the dish.

A very solid sushi place with really beautiful decor. Prices are a bit mid but not bad for the quality you get. I really enjoy eating here. The layout for some things can be confusing though. My concerns are about the dog (cutest corgi ever) in the shop that freely roams behind the counter while food is being prepped. This is a health code violation, it is very concerning for people with animal allergies. Considering dog hair and dander can become airborne, sushi is already a high risk ingredient that requires lots of care.

Yesterday, I suggested to a friend that we have late lunch at Fish & Rice because it was near the Japanese Garden, which we had just enjoyed. I remembered visiting a restaurant at this address from quite a few years ago, but it was probably a different business. I ordered for the two of us to share.Let me preface this review by saying that I lived Japanese style in Japan for a year and a half, Honolulu, Hawaii for twelve years, so I'm no stranger to Japanese cuisine. Studying the menu, I thought it strange that there was no green tea. The closest was genmaicha (brown rice tea) which I remember frugal Japanese housewives serving themselves at lunch, always offering the better quality, uncut sencha (green tea) to their visiting friends and husbands at dinner. The food was brought to our outdoor table unaccompanied by napkins or utensils. I've never eaten such a flavorless Japanese meal as I was served. The portions of seaweed salad and sunomono were good size, but their sauces were nearly indiscernible. When I asked for more sauce for the sunomono, I was given a little dish of pinkish fluid that seemed to be mostly water. I've never seen such tiny sushi (ebi, ikura, unagi) nor dumplings! They were 1/2 to 2/3 normal size with no similar reduction in price. The bare bones look of the place (not to be confused with shibui) reinforced my impression that the owner and/or manager was trying to squeeze as much profit out of the place as he could. I will not return.

As a poke lover, I was incredibly excited to try this spot out, and wasn't disappointed! I tried the Salmon Bowl, which was delicious, but they weren't kidding about it being spicy. My eyes were watering the entire time, but that's on me for not heeding their warning. Otherwise, the ingredients were super fresh and high quality. The inside is small but not cramped, has cute decor, and is super bright and clean. Love!

I came here with my boyfriend one evening to try this spot out after seeing it on TikTok and I was pleasantly surprised! Here, you order at the counter and then grab a seat. The inside is clean, bright, and has quite a few seat options. We ordered the Deluxe Chirashi, Seared Sake, and Cosmopolitan Roll. The deluxe chirashi was a huge portion and all of the sashimi cuts were fresh, thick, and delicious. The seared sake was pretty standard (and good). And, the cosmopolitan roll was fun, a great size, and amazing. Overall, a great spot and I would come back.

I've been to Fish & Rice many times and have always had great experiences. The space itself is super bright, clean, and they even have an old Super Nintendo to play on. The service is always good & pretty quick. I also love their plates and decor inside the restaurant. I was sad to see that they stopped serving the Scallop poke bowl, as that was my go-to so I ordered the Spicy bowl instead. The Spicy Bowl, priced at $25 included real snow crab, salmon, spicy tuna, yellowtail, avocado, radish, jalepeno over sushi rice. I thought it was very delicious and cool that it had so many types of fish. Fish & Rice has consistently fresh food & excellent unique sauces. I would recommend the Firecracker sauce, which is essentially a more flavorful, spicier version of your typical spicy mayo. I have also ordered the Neskowin roll which has torched salmon and that was delicious! Only giving 4 stars because the prices have risen quite a bit since I started going in 2018.

I had a poké bowl (spicy bowl) fish was very fresh and overall bowl well made - delicious, with perfect amount of spice - you know it's there. My friends sushi roll was also great and fresh. The site is small but very cute, great for a quick pop in w/ 1 or 2 friends. Will definitely return. Service was fine.

Fish & Rice is a quaint neighborhood sushi joint with fresh fish daily and specials highlighting said fish. They frequently feature decadent poke bowls that are truly a work of art. While they may not be the most affordable sushi in town, their quality is phenomenal. They have a few tables for indoor dining and sometimes outdoor seating if the weather allows. It is counter service with self-serve water and utensils, but the waiter was kind and friendly. When we went, he was bussing, delivering, and taking orders. We got the neskowin roll, toro roll, and salmon poke bowl. The fish was so fresh!! It just melted in my mouth, and you can taste the quality. Presentation was beautiful, and you can tell they treat sushi as art. Their dishes allow the fish to speak for itself; nothing is drenched in sauce or extra frills. Cozy and homey, Fish & Rice is a gem in NW Portland. Forgo the other chain sushi joints in Portland, and bid them a visit!

10/10 recommend! We can't wait to go back, the bowls were so good! The yellowtail bowl was fresh and had lots of different flavors from the tomatoes, jalapeño sauce and pineapple. The albacore bowl was also really good and the green goddess dressing was very creamy. The bowls came out pretty quick and were the prettiest poke bowls I've ever had!

Such fresh food! This place is so good. I got the salmon bowl with the king salmon and everything was perfect. They only use Tamari instead of Soy Sauce which is amazing because one of my coworkers I went with gluten free. They're very accommodating and the service was perfect. I absolutely love this place and I can't wait to go back. The food is very filling but doesn't make you feel gross which is a huge win!
