Yamato Sushi Restaurant

We tried it for takeout and they were incredibly fast and honored my request for a substitution with ease. I loved that the hibachi was in nice divided containers instead of thrown together in one styrofoam container. Our kids loved the rice, miso, and the edamame.

We stopped in for dinner on Sunday, September 15th and once again the food was very good and the service was awesome. This is a great family owned and operated restaurant with additional great staff. We will definitely be going back the next time we ate in Kittanning.

Updating this to 5 stars! This place has been around for a few years now since my initial review and we've continued to eat here each time we're in the area visiting family. It seems like it's got even better over time. I've been able to try a few items beyond just the sushi (Rice, Hibachi, etc.) and it's been consistently good. This last time around I had the sushi again and it was much better then I remembered. Lots of vegetarian/vegan options, friendly staff, and a well designed interior help too! For that reason I've changed my tune, I would recommend going out of your way for it.

Arriving in town about 90 minutes early for a meeting, I thought I'd take a chance on Yamato. Honestly, good sushi can be elusive in the biggest cities (outside Asia, anyway) so I was very pleased with what Yamato had to offer.I started with hot tea (no sake; remember - meeting!), miso soup and a combination plate of five pieces of nigiri and a California roll. All right, a little pedestrian, but I was playing it safe.The soup was good, but the nigiri were the stars of the show. The roll was good but nothing compared to the fish, which I have to confess I was a little concerned about. You see, it was a Tuesday and they're closed Mondays, so I wondered whether my fish was procured on Friday of the previous week -- or maybe earlier.No matter; they obviously know how to handle it well, and it was fresh and flavorful, without any of the fishy taste that comes with age.The only reason they didn't get five stars is because the hostess seated me right next to a group with a child, despite the restaurant being practically empty. Not that I dislike children but I was hoping lunch would be a more adult time.NOTE TO RESTAURANT: Leave an empty booth between guests when you can. It's only a couple of extra steps for your servers, and your guests will thank you.If you like sushi, I'd say give it a try.

One of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to! I am from Florida and eat fresh sushi 1 to 2 times a week and I was up here visiting and decided to try it out. So worth it, we liked everything we ordered. Clear soup, calamari, fried shrimp, chicken hibachi, black angel roll, and the best spicy tuna roll me and my boyfriend have ever had. Definitely worth coming in and trying it out there is something for everyone sushi and non sushi eaters!

Today, I went to Yamato for lunch. They have consistently good food and service, and it never disappoints. I ordered the Maki lunch with Gyoza and it was flavorful and amazing. If you want good Japanese food in Armstrong county Yamato is it.

Amazing service and food! Came here for dinner and got amazing service! The restaurant had a nice calming ambiance and wasn't loud either! The server checked on us often and made sure we didn't have dirty dishes on our table. And the food was fantastic, there wasn't a single mistake and the chicken felt like it melted in your mouth it was so good. 10/10 experience I will definitely be coming here again!

Driving home from Pittsburgh and found a Japanese restaurant in kittanning...what??? Excellent choice...had the toro for the "smell test" and it passed...then ordered sashimi and everything again passed the test...I requested a change to the menu item and the up-charge was reasonable...nicest presentation I have ever encountered...friendly family operation...I will be back

This was such a pleasant find en route to Pittsburgh for a quick lunch. They do not serve alcohol but byob is permitted. The sushi rolls were great. The atmosphere was so charming. The experience was totally made special by our server, Joyce. I will definitely be coming back any time I'm passing though.
