I fucking love this place. Been to Altoona for work many times. This place is always a stop. I'm not big on meatballs but the meatball sandwhich here is a must have. I order it out of principle. A small deli store with a great meatball sandwich.

Disappointed. I was very disappointed by my recent visit to Lajo. From what I had heard, I was expecting a nice Italian style deli and grocery store. What I found was a somewhat dirty, sparsely stocked store. Shelves were fairly empty. What they had was authentic Italian and were items you would only find in an a Italian deli but there just wasn't anything attractive or inviting about the place. Although I picked up a few items, it's not a place I will be visiting with any regularity.

Lajo's is an authentic little specialty shop tucked away in a small town but packing a big, flavorful punch! My mom, who lives in a rural area of midwest PA, has been telling me about this "small, great Italian deli that is famous for its in-house sausage creations" for over a year. But it's about 45 minutes away from them so I never took the time to go visit Altoona. That was a huge mistake. This store is about 4 aisles packed with random knickknacks and imported Italian pastas and local sauces...including their own. But if you make your way to the back of the borderline-hoarders-reminiscent locale you will find their sausage aisle. They have about a dozen or so types ranging from classic chorizo to chicken, provolone and parsley. And at insanely good prices. I ended up getting individual links because each sausage is about 1/4 lb and I am only one person. So I bought a few chorizo, a few hot italian, some chicken, provolone and parsley, and a turkey one, that I forgot what else was in it. Over to the left you see another row....olives! peppers! pickled peppers! all done in house!!I purchased about 1/2 lb of their variety peppers and was so pleased. Crunchy, tangy, addictive, you can still taste the pepper flavor! I just wish they were a tad bit spicier...On top of that, this family is proud of their craft--no additives, no preservatives, no fillers--just pure meaty goodness! They are so nice, cooing over my 18 month niece and 3 year old nephew--they really were family friendly! The one sausage I have tried (chicken, parsley, provolone) was delicate, juicy, and well-balanced. Full of flavor, it could have used a little more salt, but I never thought I'd see the day when I'd write that. For those in DC--this place is where Faccia Luna gets their famous sausages--and a few other spots in DC, too! It's worth the trip, even from DC. I will be going back! This is the first review of two. Why two? Because I still haven't tried their homemade sauces (of which I purchased two jars) or all the sausages (hey--I just outlined all that I purchased!)

found this through yelp. great stuff. It is an Italian grocery store, o yelp search engine. it was hard to find to put this review back in. the sausage was pretty good, not the very very best, but pretty good. they have some interesting italian foods that are hard to find. they close their deli early, sigh, but was not expecting, only hoping that they had one. will go back to this small, hole in the wall almost, italian grocery store.

This little Italian market is a little gem. The people are are amazing. They have very good sausage but the best reason to go there is the meatball subs. They are the very best I have ever had. I would rate it higher if they had any place to sit and eat your sandwich, you have to eat outside or in your car. Overall a great place if you are anywhere nearby
