Average bar food in downtown Mercer, PA.Pros: friendly staff, decent, small town bar. Burger wasn't bad. Decent Reuben egg rolls.Cons: no real negatives, place was just average. Nothing knocked my socks off.Summary: I'd go back if I am looking for a burger in Mercer.

I had a lovely dinner at J Hicks tonight. I wish I would have come sooner because it really was a treat. Everything we tried was excellent. Service was very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed.The menu consists of a more rustic American pub-type fare. There were burgers, steaks, pasta, chops and sandwiches. I picked the New York Strip because who can pass up a juicy steak? And it was very juicy - perfectly cooked and from a local Mercer butcher. The fries were spectacular. I am picky about my fries and these were spot on. My appetizer was a sampling of nice crunchy wings with two homemade sauces. There a variety of sauces and heat levels but the Georgia Peach BBQ was perfect for me.It's nice to get out and eat again. You don't want to miss J Hicks for a nice drink or meal.

The food was very good and made to order. Atmosphere was nice and well lit. One darn fly made it a point to annoy most of the meal. Bar seating along with tables and booths available.

Service was bad,Food was very disappointing. We are from out of town needed a spot to stop before long drive home and counted on help for recommendations and boy was it wrong. Server couldn't "make" hot tea, Did not know the beer selection and couldn't tell us the light beer on draft. Burger tasted like a steamed frozen burger, flat and tasteless. Flat iron Steak sandwich was tender and juicy but the bread to meat ratio was way way off. I only used half the bun and even then most bites were primarily bread. The au jus was gravy not au jus. Place smelled bad. Took forever to be greeted and get a menu. We had to ask for a menu, ask for silverware, ask to order drinks, ask to order food and ask for the check. Not a good experience.

I love the look...the brick walls, unique light fixtures and items highlighting the area. If you like craft beers this is definitely the place for you. During our visit we didn't try any but they certainly have a variety. Ciderboys Hard Cider Peach Country - if you like peaches you love this ciderP. B. & J. Burger - burger with bacon, peanut butter and raspberry chipotle jelly. I love the combination of the peanut butter and jelly on the burger. And the jelly has just the right amount of zip. Oh and don't forget the hand cut fries! They were fresh and tasty. One of the unique items they make are the Mason jar desserts I had the Chocolate Covered Cherry Mason Jar Delight. Unfortunately this one wasn't a hit for me. It was a little dry, very sugary fake flavor and not much of a cherry taste. They are always offering new Mason jar dessert flavors so I would definitely like to go back and try another flavor as this one might just not have been a fit for me.

Hicks' work very hard to make this a good local place to eat and drink. Stop in for weekend specials.

We stopped on our way across Pennsylvania. It was worth the short drive off 80. It was the perfect casual place for dinner during a long drive. We got fish sandwich and tacos and the PB&J burger. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. They also had a nice selection of beers and other drinks. If we're ever passing through the area again, we will definitely stop again.

Had a enjoyable dinner. This spot was on my wife's bucket list as she went to school with the owner. Waitress couldn't have been nicer. We enjoyed our time in this little spot the sits in the heart of Mercer, PA.

Well, we went to Rachel's Roadhouse and the wait list for 8 was 90 minutes and they don't take reservations. Scrambling for an alternative we called J Hick's and they said they were working on a 30 minute wait so we went there. These folks could not have been more accommodating. Made special effort to get us seated and the service was fantastic. The place is very inviting and the atmosphere is very laid back. The food was spot on and well delivered. The deep fried pickles are pretzels and highly recommended. Beer list is also well done with a range of flavors and choices. I loved that they offer a regular choice of an excellent fish sandwich. I don't need three slabs of fish on a regular sized bun at my age. Just done perfectly. Cool place and I am glad we found them. Go to this place. They appreciate you and the food is delicious.
