Hook Fish & Chicken

You gotta try the local food spots when you visiting new cities! They are hidden gems. Local and friend suggested Hook Fish and Chicken. They are multiple locations in Pittsburgh and OH. This is definitely a local gem.The location I visited was off Fifth Ave not too far from Carlow University, which is where we were dropping our kid off at college. I heard the chicken and catfish were really good and you get your money worth. There was free parking. No place to eat inside just seats for waiting. Cash only!! There is an ATM inside the restaurant.Staff was friendly. I kept adding on to my large order. Gotta fed the kids. Lol! They cook to order so nice hot, fresh food! Fries were seasoned and delicious. Catfish and oysters were really good. Catfish had just right amount crisp to the nuggets. Oysters good as well. My dad said the shrimp were good. I haven't been able to eat shrimp lately. My son said the chicken wings were really good. Cole slaw was decent and I normally do not eat that out but it was.The staff was nice. The location had ample parking. Nice portion size for money paid. Food was really good. The only downside which I think is universal was fries not good in microwave layer. Wish I had my airfryer to bring them back to life. CASH ONLY! CASH ONLY! CASH ONLY!Been driving past this place for over a year and told myself one day. Welp, today was that day! And I regret not coming sooner. The fish and shrimp are seasoned great. Hush puppies were very flavorful. Fries were extra crispy!!! They have lots of drink options and desserts not the case. I'll be trying them out next time! Don't let the outside fool you. This place is a hidden gem!!!

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for lunch. We had both driven past Hooks Fish and Chicken multiple times before and had never really thought about trying it. However, in running past it during the Pittsburgh marathon, I decided I actually wanted to try it. So on our day out we headed on over. The inside of it is small and consists of a place to order with lots of protective plastic and then an ATM as it cash only. On this day I decided to order the ocean perch and shrimp combo and then added a side of hushpuppies. Both the person taking the order and I had trouble hearing each other during the transaction, so that was sort of fun. After using the ATM and paying, I got a receipt stub and was told it would be around 15 minutes. So I went out and sat in the car and 15 minutes later, headed in. My food was ready for me and I was quickly on my way.The first thing that both my wife and I tried were the hushpuppies. They were good with a super crispy exterior and then a soft interior. Then as the sign in the store mentioned, they season everything. So the hushpuppies had the same seasoning as everything else in our order which was a delicious combination of what felt like malt vinegar with a little sweetness. After we finished the hushpuppies I was able to try everything else. I enjoyed both the shrimp and the perch with both having a nice batter, although different. The shrimp pulled easily out of their shells and the perch was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Along with those items the meal also came with fries and Cole slaw. While the fries tasted good, most were a bit limp and that may have been the only miss for me in this whole meal. Last but not least was the Cole slaw which was an extremely wet creamy based slaw. While probably a bit much on the sauce for many, I thought it was good and enjoyed the little bit of sweetness to it with the crunch of the vegetables.The bottom line for me is that I would absolutely head here again in the future. As a matter of fact, I will send my dad who loves fish here as well. Everything that we had was super tasty with the only miss for me being the somewhat limp French fries. It was also a little expensive at $25 for everything, but they do advertise as using fresh fish and they do cook it on ordering and that does help to justify the cost.

Excellent wings and fries ! Haven't tried anything else. Definitely worth checking out!

You've gotta be kidding me?!? Before I review this place, please understand that I am a catfish and hush puppy snob. I'm born and raised in Mississippi on good fried fish houses. So I can say with full confidence and decades of taste-testing: This is some of the best-fried catfish, shrimp, hush puppies I've ever had. Seriously everything was freshly dropped when we ordered, seasoned well, and great serving sizes. Go. It's a carry-out but that has nothing to do with the wonderful food. Seriously stop reading reviews; just go!

The food is good but the customer service is horrible, not sure if he is the owner but he gave me the impression he was, very very rude . He made me feel as if my money wasn't good enough and I was a bother to him simply by asking questions.

This place is a go to chicken and seafood destination. It's really one of the only places I can order fried foods and not get ill afterwards.The crispy batter is so good with the seasonings they put on top. Everything is packed extra well for all your takeout needs. Don't forget to grab some dessert to go too!

Food was mediocre got order wrong and charged us more than listed menu price. Fish good but fries were old.

I would recommend this restaurant, but I wouldn't recommend this location. I like the one on the north side. The man here was rude and didn't seem like he felt like working.

This is a great place for take out . The chicken and fish is crispy . The seasoning they apply to the food is good also the coleslaw .
