Cafe on the corner

Unexpected Soul Food restaurant, fairly near my house. The Gumbo is extraordinary, and wonderfully spiced. The sides are all very good, especially the Mac 'n' Cheese and the yams. The cornbread is just barely sweet, in the Southern style. The ribs are moist, flavorful, and falling off the bone.There are about a dozen tables, more than I expected from seeing the outside.Very good first impression, and very friendly owner.

Back again for more fried chicken wings, macaroni and cheese, yams, and of course the gumbo. I just love the owner, but call in advance. When business is slow, he may close early, BUT he will stay if he knows you're coming. We missed him on Saturday by 15 minutes. Luckily, we were staying a bit longer, and we caught him on Wednesday. The food is excellent. Support these local businesses.

I love this place! And aren't I lucky---they are about a mile from my house. I pass by almost every day going to work in the War Streets. And during Covid, they were serving free bag lunches to anyone in the neighborhood who needed them, which I thought was great. They were often standing on the sidewalk, and as I turned the corner, we would always wave. It became a nice habit, and when I finally had the opportunity to go inside and get some food, it felt like we were already friends. Chef Michael is a great cook, and my husband and I like so much of his food. My favorite is the gumbo (I love anything that reminds me of New Orleans), which is just spicy enough, and filled with shrimp and chicken. My husband loves the ribs, and we both like the reubens---corned beef for him, and turkey for me (I don't eat beef or pork). Mike also has some good sides and desserts in his cooler. There are things I haven't tried yet, but will soon! Cafe on the Corner is a place that truly deserves your support. They will make you happy, not only because of the delicious food, cooked with love, but also because of the owners, who are wonderful people.

We asked Cafe on the Corner to cater our lunch and Mike brought some of the most amazing food I've had in quite a long time. Mike is great guy and his cooking skills are only matched by his kindness and commitment to customer service. They're known for their gumbo, but I can attest that their barbeque is top notch as well. We had barbequed chicken thighs, ribs with two different sauces (one BBQ and one mustard), homemade potato salad, mac-and-cheese, fresh fruit, and homemade pound cake. We will definitely be going back and I cannot wait to try the gumbo.

Stopped in with a friend who raved about the Gumbo. We walked in and were greeted by Mike. Super friendly and told us about the lunch and dinner menu and that the Gumbo was just made. There are a couple of high tables in the front and a few larger tables in the back. Gumbo was on our agenda and were getting it to go. Mike adds some rice on the bottom of the bowl and then fills it to the top with his delicious Gumbo. Our bowls were filled with tasty Gumbo that had peppers and a lot of shrimp and some chicken. Were were not disappointed. Some of the best Gumbo I have eaten. So if you like Gumbo and are nearby, stop in and have some of Mikes delicious Gumbo and a good corn muffin.

So delicious!!!! Great food and service! Ordered for our office for a luncheon to celebrate Juneteenth and it was a huge hit!

Amazing food, sweetest staff and customer service, and their gumbo is the best in all of Pittsburgh!

Food is wonderful! Service is great !! I had the gumbo which came accompanied with a piece of cornbread which was delicious and one alsoTried the fried fish sandwich which didn't disappoint at all.

I would highly recommend Cafe on the Corner for your next event. They put together 60 boxed lunches for students at the School of Medicine. Mr. Blackwell was very communicative during the process and made menu and quantity suggestions for our event. The students seem very pleased with their complete lunch of a sandwich, chips, pasta salad, cookie and drink. The lettuce and tomato were packaged separately so the bun didn't get soggy. Condiments and utensils were provided too in a nice little package. Mr. Blackwell was very nice and very appreciative. I recommended them to my co-workers for any future events they might need catering for.

Mike was great! So friendly, great atmosphere! I would recommend for a quick bite, they have rotating selections. Gumbo is amazing
