Quite a disappointing experience. I had read that many people enjoyed their calzones, and as a calzone lover, I went to go try them out. Pretty bug let down in most ways. I tried the medium sized cheese calzone. The price of the calzone was okay ($13-$14 around) for a medium. However, it was smaller than I had expected. The shape was more similar to that of a Stromboli, too. Still, I thought maybe the taste would make up for the relatively small portion size.Nope, it didn't. They did not include much cheese and the cheese they did include did not taste very good. This calzone was far too bready and did not have much flavor. No crunchiness for the exterior, no buttery brushing or sprinkling of Parmesan like some places do.Even the side tomato sauce was not good. Now, I will saw, they did give me 2 side sauce containers, which is nice. And, they may have been tomato chunks in there as well. But, there were also large pieces of onion. And, I'm not a fan of onion, so that ruined the flavor of the sauce for me.I hate to say this, but the area itself and the vibe in the restaurant were not good. Employees were smoking outside, and the area seemed generally run down. It's not spacious or comfortable in there, so highly recommend not eating inside. All in all, I do not think I will be returning to Alioto's any time soon. The quality of the calzone was poor, the portion was small, and the sauce was dominated with onion flavor. The place is pretty run down and some employees smoked outside. Would not recommend.

Truly amazing homemade Italian food! The Beans & Greens were just like my Sicilian grandmother used to make. Heaven!!! The calzone dough is rolled out nice and thin and was fully stuffed. Added meatballs and it was fantastic! Absolutely worth the drive from Shadyside to check out Etna and this local gem!

Pizza, Pizza! This is a brief review. I stopped to pick up a pizza pie on my way home. The place appeared to be a busy pizza making factory with a restaurant on one side. The restaurant was very quiet but there was a bar in the back with many locals hanging out have beers. The pizza was good but not great. I will try it again.Atmosphere - It seemed to have a good vibe by the bar but many were locals. The tables were mostly empty.Price - $10-20 for a pizza depending the craziness.

I've eaten at Alioto's for a couple years. The food has remained relatively consistent during that time save for the Sicilian pizza (that's ALWAYS served undercooked and cold now). At first, it was a great quick bite with friendly and welcoming staff. I fondly recall a bartender named Joyce who was the same welcoming presence whether you were there for the first or thousandth time. That's changed in the past year. There is undoubtedly an Alioto's clique now that carries a subsequent hierarchy in terms of service. From the bartenders down to the owner, it resembles the Cheers theme song more and more with every visit. The owner is frequently present chatting with regulars and it's clear the place seems to value their buddies more than making money. The most recent visit, after eating and ordering two beers, I attempted to order a buffalo chicken sub to go. While the food was cooking, I would've undoubtedly had at least one more beer; thus, spending more money and upping the bartender's tip since the tab would've been larger. Win-win for restaurant and staff. The restaurant carries buffalo chicken and subs but not a buffalo chicken sub. I was shocked that when the bartender asked the manager, she was informed that the order could not be completed. Previously, I took several buffalo chicken subs out of the establishment without any issue. No matter the willingness to pay an up-charge, still, no dice. I don't love bashing establishments in the community but when an establishment sours its relationship with some in the community, my hope is that constructive feedback from locals can enhance the trajectory of the business for all.

I placed an order online through Menufy for two hoagies to be delivere at 5 pm when their delivery service begins. At 4:50 pm our order was delivered by a very nice, friendly young man, so I felt the tip I paid was well worth it. I still had to pay Menufy a delivery fee and a convenience fee of $1.50 which I felt was not necessary. On the online order form there was a box to write any special instructions. For my husband's order I wrote to add "onions, lettuce, mayo and Italian dressing" When he opened his hoagie there was tomato but none of the items that I specifically ask them to add. Since we were at home I was able to add the mayo and Italian dressing but not the onions or lettuce. I ordered a hot sausage hoagie and when I opened the foil I noticed that there was no additional sauce so any sauce on the meat was immediately absorbed into the bun which made the sandwich very dry to eat. If I had lived closer I might have been able to drive back and ask them to add more sauce, but this was not the case. I called Menufy and they asked me if I had contacted the restaurant. I said I could do that but that did not excuse their escess charges for their service charges. I then contacted the restaurant and I sat on hold for more than 18 minutes and a man picked up the call and said hello, I responded twice and then realized they had disconnected the call. i called back and got a pretty rude guy who answered gruffly and then when I told him how badly my ordered was prepared he said "what do you want us to do about it?". I told him I had spent nearly $30 on hoagies and, fortunately we were at home so I could at least add two of the four items that were missing from his sandwiches but my sandwich was dry with no sauce on it and I could not fix it. he said he would give us a credit for two hoagies and hung up - i am assuming he had our name/address, etc. because he did not even ask for it and he certainly never apologized.
