Visited here on a Wednesday early evening, a couple tables seated + one large party, appeared to be a post golf outing dinner, noise level low, quite. The food was good, only thing maybe low below average on serving size compared to other similar restaurants. Pineapple fried rice and mongolian beef were good, egg rolls were ok (could've not ordered), Hainanese chicken was good with the sauce. The service couldn't been better, had 1 employee working the whole dining room.

I've wanted to try this place for years. Not sorry I came in but overall I felt the food was flat tasting. Needed a little more punch. I think the issue is that they are not sure which cuisine they are focusing on. Chinese, Malaysian, or Thai. Egg Rolls - I don't recommend. Try something else. They were fine but not worth the calories. Tom Yum Soup- Amazing!!! Highly recommend. Best one I've ever had. Soft shell Crab, I felt it should have had a little sauce to dip in or on the plate. Good but not great. I ate it all but wouldn't order again. Shrimp Pad Thai was nice sized and the shrimp were plump. Flavor profile lacked the pungent taste this dish is known for. Might have needed more lime but again, I ate it all. It's just not something I'd order again. They brought a homemade coconut dessert out which was nice. Kind of like a rice pudding slash jelly/ jello type of thing. I'm not a coconut guy but it was a nice surprise and appreciated. Nice ambiance and hard working family place. Best of luck.

You know, I miss the flavor of M'asian/S'porean/Indonesian food. Having moved to Illinois recently from SoCal, we'd long patronized the Belacan Grill in Tustin- whose authenticity could never, ever be questioned. We wanted to see if Penang would offer a level of authenticity that would entice us to come back for more - it did, and we will. Ambience- we arrived on a cold Saturday morning, and were quickly seated. Not too busy at all. We ordered M'asian Kopi (coffee w/sweetened condensed milk) and quickly deemed it "authentic"! Score the first point! Second- the menu had Roti Canai and Paratha - now this is key. You get this right, you can win over my heart (not joking!). The Roti and extra Paratha came quickly, and the flavor of the chicken curry that accompanied it was just good enough to qualify as "as close to authentic as I can hope for in Illinois" - and that's not a bad thing - at all! We then ordered Mee Goreng as our "go to" entree - now when it arrived, we loved the look - the texture - the flavor was almost all right, but it was (sad to say) far too sweet. That said? We enjoyed it and would return! Our only true critique was that the price was SO high for what you get. Maybe we were spoiled in SoCal, but somehow I don't think the OC is that cheap - and Penang's definitely pricier. But that won't stop us - we'll be back for sure! Check it out for a decent take on M'asian food- we did, and we liked it.

Well it's been since 2019 before covid when I went to this restaurant with my friend who treated me last time but food was uniquely good I had a craving for Indonesian Malaysian cuisine I haven't had it for a while compared to all the other Asian cuisines. So this is a return eating Malaysian food. My food for the most part is still delicious especially I haven't had nasi goreng and gado gado. That is Malaysian or Indonesian fried rice Indonesian salad that they use a lot of peanuts and Curry which is uniquely delicious. They had a bigger party that day and at least the waitress gave fair warning about that it was going to be a little longer to prepare the food but we were seated right away in regards to service and they were actually worth that bad in the wait time not like an hour or anything like that. Ambience for the most part has that the Malaysian experience so I wouldn't complain so much. Other than that a perfect five stars do come over here it's still operating the same even after covid. They used to have Penang in Chicago in Old Chinatown by cermak and Wentworth but it burnt down that building and they never decided to open it again back in the late 90s
