Back in the old days you could go inside and wander about breathing the fresh baked goodness. Now you just get a whiff through the window. I guess it's better as you don't have to worry about people touching and breathing on the treats.I had a good feeling as I watched the bakery lady package up my pan de muertos from the oven rack. It was still warm and the scent of anise filled the car. Sugar was sprinkled on the outside adding a bit of sweetness. The thin outside layer had a little crunch while the inside was delicate and fluffy a bit like a cinnamon roll. I loved the flavor of this yeast based bread which had some sweetness and anise flavor. This is the best pan de muertos I've had as I got lucky and was able to get it fresh out of the oven. Other years it's been sitting around for awhile and the flavors and aroma were not as vivid.Pan de muertos is only available starting the week before Día de los Muertos. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead This year it's Nov 1 -2. It is a celebration to pay respects to friends and family who have died. Panchitas appears to be baking it fresh at 2pm each day. I'll be returning before November 2 so I can do more celebrating.

Coworker brought in sweets from Panchitas and I sampled everything so I can write a review for onlookers.4/5 chocolate sponge roll with shredded coconut: This was my favorite of them all. I'm not sure why the filling is red, but it tastes like chocolate. I like the soft sponge cake and texture of the shredded coconut. 3.75/5 chocolate chip cookie: literally a cookie with sweet chocolate chips. I prefer my chips integrated.3/5 Apple filled empanada: the filling was a bit lackluster for me.

I don't know if all the Panchitas are under the same brand/ownership but this place is upsetting. The bread was not bad but what makes this a 1 star review is the service and the arroz con lecheFirst the young man seemed annoyed that he was there and actually had to help a customer. So what. Ok.But when my sister in law tried the arroz come leche she spat it out right away. It was rancid. It has gone bad. They need to do regular quality control checks and make sure things stay fresh. Not that it matters, but we won't be back.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. We are big fans of Panchitas on 32nd St in North Park. We expected the same quality and service from this bakery as well. unfortunately that was not the case. The gentleman that was tending the store was rude and unprofessional. Not once did he make eye contact or even bother to look our way. His apron was filthy and he was sweating profusely. We also noticed 2 fly's inside the bread displays. The bread was tasteless. We ended up tossing it. Very disappointed.
