PO Boxes

The good ol' Florence Post Office. This is the most basic of Post Offices. So far this place has hung on, as it has been close to being closed down on a couple occasions. Need a P.O. Box, they have you covered. Mail a package, buy some stamps, check. Otherwise there is not much going on here like passport photos or anything your larger Post Offices offer. There is nothing fancy here, and the place looks like it was last remodeled in the'50's, but a Post Office is an important part of a community, and for that Florence is thankful this one is still hanging on.

This post office has a lunch hour that starts at 1:15 each weekday. Fine. But if you come at 1:00, especially with a few packages, be prepared to hear grumbling and to be quizzed about what's in your package--not the usual dangerous substances question either. I mail books. The clerk always squeezes my packages and asks me if it's a book and if I'm the author, etc. What business is it of theirs? "Thanks," I said. "I'll come back later." She almost didn't give my package back. You can't have it both ways. You can't complain about having to do your job and then not give back a package. Lesson learned! Enjoy your lunch. I'll never be back.
