The Bakery Unlimited

It is a GREAT bakery that earns its rating as one of the nation's 10 best bakeries. Located on the Eastern side of the great Winterset public square, this terrific family business oozes customer service and kindness, and its food is spectacular. Owner Jim Sparks is a wonderful man, and they are a strong community supporter. Their family has operated the business for more than 40 years. My apple fritter was the best I have ever enjoyed, and we decided that it was definitely worth the 45-minute ride! They also have great donuts and cookies, plenty of indoor seating, and historic Winterset photos.This is a jewel. Visit it; you'll love the entire experience.

This is a pleasant "Bakery on the Square" that my Dad and I stopped at during our recent drive through Winterset (think Bridges of Madison County). We had just come from the John Wayne Museum and I was looking for a sweet roll for my early hotel room coffee the next morning. That would be for my 5 AM wake up (home and away) to tide my over before breakfast with Dad around 8 AM. This Bakery has a lot of room and seating, and it's a bit of a walk to the counter. As we were here mid-afternoon, selection was more limited, but still tempting. I would have preferred a scone over a donut (because the former is "healthier"?), but my choice was either going to be the later with white frosting or a long john. And what I chose was delicious the next morning.

Sweet bakery stop walking around the Square in Winterset. Friendly service and an affordable treat, double bonus. I tried the Apple crisp donut, very moist and delicious. I also bought a coconut pie to go, and I really wish I would have bought 2. Next time we are in a road trip, I will grab extras. I love the hard wood nostalgia of the bakery. It's hard to preserve charm.

What a great bakery on the square. Local and unpretentious, but yet full of flavors. If you are looking for a treat, try their daily specialties. On another visit here, we had their Orange Blossom - truly memorable.On today's visit, I had their Apple Fritter and walked the Square window shopping (see my reviews of the Quilt Museum and the Dutch County General Store). As you can see from my pic, I believe this isn't a conventional fried Apple Fritter. It had the requisite amount of glazing, but the dough was more of donut dough and, perhaps, baked. It had a generous amount of apple bits with sweet, cinnamon notes. I got my expected Apple Fritter sugar rush.As with this style of restaurant, buy your goodies in the morning for the greatest selection. I'll be coming back again and again.

We got donuts and they were very good! Came back though town and got a hamburger onion pizza and cheese garlic bread. All very, very, good!! Thin crust was perfect with a great crunch!

Really good food! Husband and wife run the place. Delicious pastries at a great price. I got 3 pastries for less than $5. The place looks really run down inside. It is dark and sparse near the front and has a lot of boxes stacked up in the back. They also seem to have a problem with technology. Had a hard time getting the card reader to work.They are looking for help if anyone is looking for a job.

Possibly the best doughnuts ever made. This is a weekly request from my kids. They love the glazed doughnuts! The prices are great as well.It's a little ma and pa shop and a hole in the wall place. The decor is definitely outdated and it sort of looks dingy and even a bit dirty. Honestly, it has never bothered me. Health inspections have always been up to par so I assume the kitchen is clean and well kept. Locals all know and love this place. If you get there after 9 on a weekend it's likely to be slim pickings. Everything is homemade and the do offer other baked goods as well. If you are in Winterset I highly recommend this place!!

Quite possibly the best Doughnuts anywhere. The place smells wonderful a and the people who own and operate the place are great. I need to try other things aside from doughnuts, but I would like to see you resist the temptation.

The Bakery Unlimited has the best apple fritters and apple crisp donuts ever! Coffee is only a buck with refills free!

Take a trip back in time at this quaint and charm filled bakery! Apple Fritters baked fresh every morning and are excellent. Friendly staff and small town atmosphere, complete with the table of locals discussing all things Winterset.
