Great little gem right in downtown Lincoln with a very low ticket price. They have standing exhibits and also bring in traveling exhibits, often from the Smithsonian. They have recently added a children's section to encourage interactivity for the little ones.

Very interesting to learn so much about the history of the Great State of Nebraska at this museum in downtown Lincoln. Well worth at least two or three hours and I was glad to be here during the summer break. I have no doubt that this place fills up with kids on school trips who are running about and generally making a lot of noise. None of that today!Starting with an exhibit on dirt racing (the docent was unimpressed with my knowledge of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in my home of Charlotte), there were crafting exhibits, women in business, a huge photography exhibit and more about Nebraska growing from territory to state. If you're at all interested in recent history, this is the spot. I had fun![Review 11394 overall, 1171 of 2019.]

There was mention of this being a free museum so I'll mention first that it's not, but it's not expensive! We enjoyed our time there and had fun in the gift shop! Very friendly staff.

Based on the museum's website before my visit my expectations were low. Very low. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the exhibits' contents as well as the visual quality. The museum's curators included a variety of objects from their collections, reproductions, and original documents along with stations for children (of all ages) to touch & interact with objects including buffalo parts and recreated dwellings. I visited to give myself an overview of Nebraska history as I haven't read a book on the topic (yet) being new to the state. While some of the exhibits are showing their age, overall, the quality of the design and installation has made them long-lasting. Pet peeve of a museum regular: many reproductions of documents, photographic formats, etc. do not have labels attributing them either to the museum's or another repository's collection. Frankly, I just assumed they took all of those items from the Library of Congress' American Memory website. It can come off as lazy, but was probably more a by-product of not having enough resources to get reproductions of material in other Nebraska repositories. The museum is in a building of a certain 1960s-1970s vintage and this is obvious throughout the museum's spaces, stairwell, etc., but the exhibit halls are well done and have been updated. The gift shop is well-stocked with Nebraska and western items and I would rate it average overall with an above average postcard selection. What do we have to do to get the state of Nebraska to invest in its online infrastructure and content? These websites are themselves an interesting step back in time to 2002, but I like my history in my museums & my books NOT on websites intended to draw audiences in. I guess I'll make a gift to the Nebraska Historical Society (the museum's parent body) and designate it for digital content and collections. Don't be fooled by the under investment in Nebraska's online presence for its history! Do check out the Nebraska History Museum.

The Museum of Nebraska History is a donation-based museum located in downtown Lincoln. It has wonderful displays of ancient peoples and Native American tribes from the area as well as information regarding Westward Expansion and other issues the state has faced in the last 100 years. I most enjoyed the tribal clothing on display and (albeit, randomly) the antique glass bottles. Whether you're visiting Nebraska or you live there, it's worth spending some time there. You do have to check any large bags upon entering the museum, but if it's not busy, they will have enough lockers to accommodate your items. The gift shop is quaint and has some uniquely Nebraskan items!

Last I heard males with a European ancestry had something to do with the history of Nebraska, but one would never know that by the presentations here. BLM riot memorabilia, women's suffrage, and Native Americans get prominent mention though.
