The Loess Hills are exactly what they sound like - some hills made of a lot of dirt and sediment. While that doesn't sound super exciting, it is quite a scenic drive around the Loess Hills if you're a fan of wide open spaces, fields, and liminal-space type visages.I think it's sort of beautiful to look out over the plains and open sky - you can see every single cloud and storm coming in.Now, I wouldn't say that the Loess Hills are something that you need to make a special trip to see/visit, but if you're passing by them, I would definitely recommend a stop to just take a gander!

As part of a round-the-US road trip, I read about the Loess Hills Scenic Byway as something worth seeing in Iowa. Having driven through Utah and Colorado, it was definitely underwhelming. The corn fields were all dried up when I went (in October) which made it even less picturesque. The drive itself was OK, but I found a short "out and back" hike in the Loess hills that ended up in the woods that wasn't too bad.
