In front of the sculpture with two of the guides.
"Tragedy at Winter Quarters" is a sculpture depicting the burial of a child by her parents. Very moving.
Beautifully landscaped flowerbeds around the cemetery.
My great great grandmother Abigail Sprague was buried here.

Winter Quarters is actually at 3215 State St in Omaha. Phone number 402-453-9372. It is about 18 min away. This address in Xouncil Bluffs is for the Historic Kanesville Tabernacle which was leveled last year. There is still a small visitors center there. In late 2023 an interpretive garden will be built on the site .

How am I the first local Yelp-er to review this historic site? First off, I am a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have been here on my own with my kids and have taken family here when they have visited Omaha. The Visitors Center is adjacent to the Church's local temple, which is not open to the public. However, anyone can walk the grounds of the temple (there is a historic graveyard site an artwork behind the temple), in addition to visiting the Visitor's Center. It is located in one of my favorite parts of the City, Florence. It is an older part of town with a good collection of preserved old buildings, with beautiful hillsides. This visitor's center is not as big as other Church historical sites in other parts of the county, particularly in Utah and Nauvoo, but it is well curated, for those who are history buffs, and retells important history of the Church and the area. Many of the exhibits are interactive, including a full sized cabin you can go into, a handcart you can pull, and pioneer-like accessories for kids to play dress up. It can be a fun place to take kids to, particularly when you are looking for an indoor thing to do in the Winter that's free. If you are looking for something interesting to do in town, consider this site as an option.

Beautiful well-documented site of Mormon history. There is a Visitor's Center, cemetery and LDS temple with guided tours, displays, and a short film.

Winter Quarters Visitors Center is NOT in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The correct address is 3215 State Street, Omaha. It's 15 minutes from this Council Bluffs location. Winter Quarters is a terrific 30-75 minute visit with a 16 min video, visitors center, and the cemetery. And it's free. The kids love pushing the handcart and the log cabin and the covered wagon. The museum tells the story of Winter Quarters and also about the 90,000 pioneers traveling the 1300 miles from Nauvoo to Salt Lake from 1846-1890. A really cool interactive map shows all the different companies coming by wagon, handcart, train, and over the oceans by steamship and sailing ship- so you can look for the company your ancestor traveled in. You can find who is buried in the cemetery, maybe it's your great grandmother! This is a great place to learn about the pioneers heritage. The guides are so pleasant and helpful.

Surprisingly my favorite tour in the far west locations, which caught me off guard because I had to drive the least to get to it. Wish I'd allowed more time! The missionaries were so sweet and gave such a personal tour. I really felt it was a special place and they helped hear it towards me as a newly baptized member. I recommend getting a long tour and having a long chat if you have the time. Such good people here!

Full disclosure: I'm Mormon so my review will be biased towards liking this place. It is really well done though. My husband and I were there with another couple and we each have 5 kids....so 10 kids! We were wild but the female missionary giving the tour never batted an eyelash and had control over their interest the entire time. It's interactive the whole time and very informative. A small and really well done place. It was raining pretty hard so I didn't get to enjoy the cemetery but I ran up there to check out the statue of the family who had to bury a child and it looked pretty and peaceful (if not raining). Well worth a stop
