This hallowed 60-ton boulder stands as a shining beacon of patriotism and national pride in Greenfield, Iowa. Each year by Memorial Day, revered local artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II adorns the rock with a stirring new mural honoring the brave men and women who have answered the call to serve in our nation's armed forces. Sorensen's remarkable Iowa Freedom Rock® Tour brings these powerful tributes to communities across the state, ensuring that the sacrifices of our veterans are forever memorialized and celebrated. This sacred monument stands as a testament to the unbreakable spirit of American freedom.

This is the Adair County Freedom Rock in Menlo IA. This was the rock that started it all! The only FR that is repainted each year...Completing the Freedom Rock tour of all 99 Iowa counties is something my girlfriend and I have been working on for the past few years. We are four rocks away from the end of our journey at this time. Not only do we learn about the military involvement and the contributions of veterans in each county, but a lot of times we stumble on other hidden gems, that we had no idea even existed, as we venture further into our own backyard. As happy as I am going to be when hit 99 and finish our Freedom Rock Tour...a little part of me is going to really miss these trips. We'll just have to find another "tour" to pick up.When you are checking out each Freedom Rock make sure you explore the surrounding area for other points of interest. And please remember to support local businesses...!Visit https://www.thefreedomrock.com/ for more information on Iowa's Freedom Rocks and the tour!

What used to be the entrance to the limestone quarries when I was going up, is now a tribute to all the military. I believe in 1999 the Freedom Rock, a large 60+ ton boulder located on highway 25 north of Greenfield, was first painted with a Thank You for our nations Veterans to honor their service to our country. The artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, was inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan, as well as, wanting to give Veterans a unique recognition on Memorial Day.Bubba paints The Freedom Rock on his own with support of family and friends. He is not paid to paint the rock but is able to do work on it each year with donations. Each April he begins a new four panel design and finishes around Memorial Day. Take the time to really look closely at the Rock, you will discover names and tributes of fallen locals. It's a great inspiration piece surrounded by miles of corn fields.

Ok we decided to visit a few Freedom Rocks on our travels home from Omaha. The one in Greenfield/Menlo was the the best. I believe it was the original one. If you are in search of a very quick side trip off of I80 this is your place. I believe that it is less than a couple miles off the highway. The rock is beautifully painted each year with a different scene. If you need a leg stretch or you are a military buff this is for you.

Artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen has done an amazing job at honoring our Herod with this beautiful tribute painted simply on a huge rock. He changes it every few years so come back and stop to see the new design. This patriotic pit stop is an amazing hidden gem on your way through Iowa and s must see!!

I, unfortunately, have no choice but to rate this low. I have been looking forward to seeing The Freedom Rock since we left home in Washington state 6 days ago. Once we got to the road, there is a 10 ton weight limit, we couldn't drive our RV down the road and it's nearly a mile down so walking and leaving our RV behind wasn't a good option. We left disappointed and our rig covered in chaulky dust. I hope you make it and enjoy!
