I was in town visiting family a couple weeks ago, and stayed at this oasis on top of a hill in Mankato, KS. Upon entering the room, the unmistakable aroma of stale cigarette smoke filled my nostrils. I asked the innkeeper whether a room which prohibited smoking might be available, to which they replied that they "think all the rooms are smoking rooms." A truly good sign that this was going to be an adventure of a weekend. They told me they might have some deodorizer spray, though, so that was nice. After checking the bed for bedbugs and fortunately finding none (though the sheets were untucked, had holes in them, and looked slept-in), I brought in my luggage then drove down the street to the Dollar General to buy some Glade plugins, and Febreze. Upon returning to my room and spraying it top to bottom with Febreze, a guy, who I previously thought was another guest but turned out to be another employee (?) knocked on the door and handed me a bottle of what he called "deodorizer" but appeared to be a home-made concoction, as it was in an old windex bottle. I sprayed it once, and it smelled worse than the cigarettes, so I decided to just leave it alone for the rest of the weekend. As for the remainder of the room, the soap scum on the walls, rings in the toilet bowl, dead flies in the windowsill, and a toilet so close to the wall that you had to sit on it at an angle really added to the overall charm an allure of the place. Outside, when I arrived, I noticed a bunch of furniture haphazardly thrown about outside one of the rooms. "That's unsightly, I thought." Fortunately, they did clean it up and stack it nicely. I just wish they hadn't chosen 10pm as the most appropriate time to noisily drag beds and dressers across concrete. Back in the room, the bed wasn't uncomfortable, so they have that going for them. I did, however, choose to sleep on top of the comforter, as the sheets gave me a pretty unsettling feeling. I planned on reading a bit before I went to bed, and there was a lamp on the nightstand to make that a more comfortable experience. Unfortunately, the cord for the lamp wasn't long enough to reach the outlet without being draped across my face, as the outlet was conveniently located directly above my head in the bed. The water pressure in the shower was decent. The sink had two temperatures: warm and hot. They didn't provide hand soap, but there was a half-used bottle of hotel shampoo there which I reluctantly used for the sake of having some sort of sanitary bathroom experience. When you pay for the room, you pay in advance, and a sign on the office window clearly says "no refunds." It's almost as if they know...Before you say, "why didn't you stay in another hotel?!" -- the only other place in town was booked for the entire weekend. The Dreamliner, in the other hand, has 100% vacancy until I arrived, and I didn't see another living soul check in or out of the place for the remainder of the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if, two weeks later, I wasn't still the most recent guest.

I stay here a lot when I come to Mankato. Here recently I have noticed a lot of changes.... new friendly owners, friendly staff and best of all remodeled rooms. There prices are just right. I learned that if you dont feel like you should be there then move on and this place feels like I should be there. Thank you to the staff!!!!
