Douglas County Historical Society Library

I have used this library for years. It is a great spot. Sad to see people rating it so low. Don't be fooled. Know how to use it and how to politely work with the staff. They are very accommodating if they understand what you need.

The old house where this "library" is housed is cool but the staff and facilities really are not up to par. First, it seems like a huge fire hazard. The whole place. I didn't see evidence of a sprinkler system and it's just stuff sort of everywhere. Maybe I could see it but it would concern me to store things here if it's not humidity controlled and more fire safe. Additionally, I asked if the people who worked here had any training or formal education in the library sciences or as a historian and was told...they've worked here a long time. Personally, I don't think that rates evidenced by the fact that when one item was requested the wrong thing was supplied and the person Libby...Lilly... something like that had no idea they had pulled the wrong thing and said it would take 24 hours to find the right thing. That seems a bit much for the size operation. She wasn't particularly apologetic either. Didn't seem to care she'd gotten it wrong. There is supposedly a fellow that works there as well but I've not ever actually seen him there. I was told he's a playwright so maybe this is his second job. Not really sure. If you want to be a respected library I think you should be able to catalog and staff so that you can act like a proper library.
