I just so happened to see a post on OFL about their upcoming special for roast pork, dumplings, and sauerkraut and made an impulsive decision to have lunch here.Back story...I'm Vietnamese but I have come to LOVE this Czech dish due to my husband's family making it one a year on Thanksgiving instead of the normal line up. I could probably eat this every day...ehh, maybe once a week. And because it's such a niche dish and not commonly available, I will seek it out if it turns up. Such was the case here.I've never heard of Donohue's prior to this nor am I entirely familiar with all the great places in South Omaha. The building was unassuming and a bit darker lit, but you could tell it was a place where "regulars" hang- as evidenced by the waitress asking us if we needed menus (we did). The plate came within 5 minutes of ordering and it took about the same amount of time for me to devour it. The dumplings were delicious and the pork was some of the most tender, flavorful I have ever had. I think the gravy could have use a tad more salt (and I never add extra salt to anything) and I would've like the sauerkraut to be a bit more tart, but I understand that's a personal preference. The price was fair- I think maybe $11.99?, but I wouldn't have minded paying a little more to get a little more. Excited to come back next month when they have this special again!

When Sue was working, we'd lunch every Tues at various S. O. spots. Donohue's was always a favorite. Missed that when she retired. Was out that way Wed and first thing I wanted to do is lunch here again. Special was Beef Stroganoff. I opted for a Patty Melt. Absolutely delicious, as always. Two thin burgers on marble rye with cheese, onions and thousand dressing. Still wanna try the Stroga tho.Sue had BLT. Said it was great, also. Ate it all. I see today the special is Enchilada's and Tacos. I already know they are great and want to go back right now. You gotta try this for lunch. Mike, Jr is always there cooking.

Ordered through Postmates for lunch. I really liked that they had chicken livers on the menu, however -- they actually did not. Postmates driver called and I subbed for gizzards instead. I should've just cancelled the whole order. I got 2 orders of gizzards and they are both raw. Like chicken still clucking and bleeding raw. This is ridiculous, you can kill people like this.

What a great local bar! I stopped in with some friends over lunch and watched a Creighton game. Loved it! My cheeseburger was delicious and domestic drafts were $1 a pint. Whoa. Haven't seen prices like that in a very long time. I will definitely be back.

This is a true locals bar. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon after eating tacos next door. A shaggy haired lad like myself raised a few eyebrows from the regulars, who were a camo-wearing, blue collar lot in their 30s and 40s who all seemed to know each other. The bartender was nice and she served me up a Bud for $1.75. Not a bad deal at all.I like the decor of the place. It has a loose sports-theme. Plenty of TVs playing sports as well. The building itself is attractive enough. Can't go wrong with old brick walls covered in Huskers memorabilia. Donohue's reminds me of the type of locals bar you'd find in the older areas of cities like Chicago and St. Louis.I'd stop by again with some friends, for sure, but probably wouldn't roll in again solo.

I have eaten at Donohue's over lunch a few times over the years, but with the Covid-19 deal I have made more of an effort to support local eateries to help keep their doors open. Donohue's is one of my go to joints now. I am a big fan of burgers and Tara's Atomic burger is my personal favorite in town. If you like spicy, give it a try! I am also enjoying their Thursday night cent wing special. I haven't had a bad thing there yet.

If your tendency when driving along L Street is to get from A to B as quickly as possible, you might be missing not only a classic piece of South Omaha history, but one of the finer Irish pubs in the city. Donohue's Pub doesn't lead with the term "gastro" -- it's a sports bar after all -- but Donohue's is a working man's sports pub with excellent grub, friendly neighborhood regulars and an inexpensive menu. There has always been a mix of old and new along L Street and Donohue's is in a building that has been standing as a silent witness to change in Omaha since 1891. 3232 L street has been owned by two different breweries, Schlitz and Jetter, it was reputedly once home to a brothel, according to the pub's Facebook page, and everything from Cowboys to hippies have been here in that time. Outside there is a decent parking lot in front and side street parking in the neighborhood. Inside, Donohue's has plenty of parking as well. Wherever you sit, owner of 17 years Mike Donohue says hello when he brings kitchen orders out himself. Donohue is crazy about Nebraska football and the interior of his pub reflects that fact. Donohue's may not have quite as much NU memorabilia as a Husker Store, but it has nine of the owner's old license plates from around the country reading "MAD4NU." There are about a dozen TVs, including in the restrooms, focused on sports as much as possible. There is also Keno, Darts, Golden Tee and a multi-game arcade console. On tap they have Bud, Bud Light, Goose Island IPA, Stella Artois, Shock Top Belgian White, Michelob Amber Bock, Bass, Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat Stout and, on the rotating tap, Infusion Brewing Company's Pistachio Porter. Pints range from $2.75 to $4 at "everyday prices" putting it safely in Economy Class. I had the Buffalo Sweat Stout as well as the Infusion Pistachio for $3.25 each, both dark, delicious and full-bodied. I hadn't intended to eat, but the Ham Melt called to me from the specials board. Be warned that everything on the menu is pretty special. The neighborhood has always been home to large immigrant communities and some of that diversity is reflected in the weekly and daily specialty dishes created by Mike and cook Rita. Polish noodles, lasagna, salmon chowder, French dip, Italian beef and Cuban pork sandwiches all make the cut along prime rib, doggie melts, smothered fries, pan-fried chicken, tamale floats, Ghostadillas and original burgers like the Little Mike or Tara's Atomic. Corned beef and cabbage is served on St. Practice Day, the 17th of every month. Mondays are Taco Night, but anything could happen on this menu of rotating specials. Happy Hours are every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prices are reduced by 25 to 50 cents. Drink specials change seasonally. Wednesdays are $1.25 bottles of Busch light, Hamms, PBR, High Life and Old Milwaukee. Saturdays are $1.75 pints of Bud and Bud Light. Happy St. Practice Day!
