My son had an outpatient surgery here this past week. From early correspondence with the Surgical Nurse team to the day of check-in everything went smoothly. The staff that I interacted with was very friendly and always provided great information. The nursing staff before his surgery, during, and after were all amazing. Our room was very nice and clean and . Overall, I was very pleased with a facility and would recommend it for anyone.

I did not even know there was a hospital at Boys Town. My son Nate had fever and swelling. A visit to the Urgent Care clinic there turned into an immediate hospitalization and eventual surgery. The staff was friendly and caring, and kept us informed about what they were doing and why. Most importantly they saved our little boy, who a month later is good as new.

UPDATE::Unfortunately I had to see Dr. Sjulin again just 4 days after my surgery. I had gotten a post-op bleed and needed emergency surgery. This experience was with the inpatient side this time. The service was still great and I would still recommend boys town to anybody who asked me. Basically, around midnight Friday night I started bleeding from the site I had my tonsillectomy, so my mom called boys town who paged the on call doctor who happened to be DR. Sjulin he got back to us about 5 min later and he told me to come in to the hospital so he could take a look at it because he was already on his way there. When I got to the hospital they took us back to an inpatient room and all the nurses introduced themselves. Once the doctor got a chance to come see me, he looked at it and right away could see that there was a large clot formed and it was not bleeding very much any more. He asked me a lot of questions about when I last ate and drank to determine if it was safe to put me under that night. He told me he wanted to be aggressive with this small bleed because it would probably just bleed off and on for several days and make me sick to my stomach if he did not go back and close it off again. He was very reassuring and tried to make me feel as best as he could. He had to do another emergency surgery before mine for a young boy who came in with a similar problem right before me so I did not have my surgery until about 3:00 am. When that time came dr. Sjulin came in to talk to me again with the anesthesiologist. They took me away to the surgical room and next thing I remember is waking up in recovery about 30 min later. The recovery nurses were very nice and answered all my loopy questions even when I asked the same thing multiple times. I was only in recovery for about 20 min. When they brought me back to my room the nurses made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed and were all very helpful. It was about A.M. And everybody was very tired. It was a long night for me and I did not get much sleep. My mom was allowed to stay, there was a couch that looked like it pulled out but we couldn't figure out how to do that so she just slept on it how it was which was fine. The nurses brought her blankets and and left us alone as much as they could. After a while I had to call a nurse in because I had to use the bathroom and I couldn't figure out how to untangle all the cords I was hooked up to, after that the blood pressure cup that had been on my arm started acting up and they just ended up taking it off. I pressed the call button several times that night for various reasons and every time the nurses came in quickly and were always helpful. In the morning, I could hear some of the other patients who had gotten up and the nurses talking to them, I could tell that there were a few baby's and I saw some of the nurses walking up and down the halls with them bouncing and soothing them. I could hear another nurse laughing and joking with the little boy next door to me who came in right before me and everyone sounded very happy and energetic. I was extremely bored so I asked a nurse if I could borrow an iPad that they told me they had, and it was filled with kids games ranging from small toddlers to even older teens, it was good enough for me at the time considering how bored I was because I didn't fee like watching TV. One of the other nurses brought me a big binder full of lots of lists, one list was of movies they had there, another list was of the Xbox games for the Xbox they had in every room, and the binder also had a list of food places near by because there isn't a cafeteria at the hospital. There is. Cafeteria on campus in the welcome center and hospital guests did get 10% off but we didn't bother to try it. The nurses had made pancakes in the morning for the patients and they tasted good enough. Once Dr. Sjulin got there in the morning to see all his patients he told me I was free to go once I got all my discharge papers. It probably took about an hour after that to get out of there but that's still faster than some of my other experiences with bigger hospitals. They wheeled me out to my car and I was finally able to go home! Fingers crossed that I don't have to go back again until my follow up appointment.

From how I was treated by Boys Town Hospital's administration and their "make it right" insurance program, "3Rs" through COPIC, I would not recommend anyone go there. I would though like to make clear that the doctors, nurses and other staff were nothing but caring and professional during the surgeries. This complaint is only with the hospital's administration and COPIC. I understand that errors occur but how this was handled and the lack of empathy from the hospital was terrible.I had to have a throat surgery redone due to (what I was told) a wrong lab test being ordered. I was told multiple other reasons initially on why this had to be redone. In short, the surgery required me to be put under with anesthesia while the doctor goes down my throat and takes a piece off of my vocal chord off to be tested.Going back the second time for surgery caused these issues:-Missing additional days of work (pay) and using vacation for an additional appointment to see if I needed the second surgery.-The second surgey itself and aving to go through the pain and hassle of redoing it; being put under and recovering. Following the second surgery I was sore in my abdomen and neck and felt ill for multiple days causing me to miss additional days of work.-Having my caretaker take another day off of their work (pay) to dive me there, wait while I was in surgery, drive me home and take care of me that night for a second time.-The hours spent dealing with the hospital and COPIC trying to find out what actually happened and trying to find reasonable compensation. The communication was terrible for something that was the fault of the hospital.Lori Umberger is the "Chief Nurse Executive" and person I tried to work things out initially with at Boys Town. I had to reach out to her. Not once (until I pointed it out) did she ask how I was doing and did not even seem to feel bad about her hospital's mistake. She kept calling it simply a "communication mixup". In her executive position she has lost her empathy as a nurse and should not be in the position she is if this is how she treats patients Every time she would just point out that the second surgery would be covered by the hospital. This is something anyone would expect. I was concerned with their initial offer of 200 dollars to "make things right". After pressing and multiple calls she was "able to" get it to 400 dollars. This is no where in the range to even cover my pay for the multiple day of work missed and the other items listed above. She would not help with anything past that and made it sound like she worked hard to get me the extra "day" as they call it though COPIC.After I was not able to make any progress with Lori, I spoke with Dr. Jason Bruce, Executive Vice President of Healthcare. He was hard to even find and get ahold of. He replied saying he had forwarded our discussion to all parties but that this is a COPIC program and I have to finalize everything with them. COPIC (Jennifer Kerrigan) told me that this was something to work out with the hospital. So just the run around. Obviously neither side knows who I am supposed to work with and neither seemed to really care but that they would look into the "root cause if this communication error."It is sad this is Boys Town's standard of care and that no fair agreement could be made. For that reason I am writing this review, reaching out to local media and looking at other options. How they handle these situations is definitely something that needs to be looked into more by both the media and state/federal oversight.
