Otwell's Food Store

Otwell's is a staple in this community and is a great place to shop at when I'm on that side of town. This is where I buy my chilies during the holidays. I have to go out of my way but of course it's worth it.

We used to come over here with our mother to find the best collard greens in town, and at the best prices.This may sound horribly racist, but we'd also come here for the biggest melons in town, and for a wide selection of beans. (There's not much better than a hot bowl of lima beans and smoked pork. Pure comfort food. And yes, that stuff gets harder and harder to find all them time! It's been that way for years now.)There was someone here -- probably a specialist produce buyer -- who always made sure that these certain things in the produce department were very carefully chosen.This is also one of the few places around where I can find smoked fatback, smoked hog jowls, and other delicious Southern necessities. (I even found smoked trotters here a few years back, and nothing's better for cooking up a big mess of black-eyed peas.)Mistyday's review pleased me, as I, too, remember my own grandma very carefully washing her greens multiple times with soap and water prior to her simmering them with smoked pork all day long.Store is clean, well lighted, and surrounded by ample parking.Five stars.

Ever wonder why eastside greens taste so good? Well it's all about the type of pork meat you put in greens.You will have to wash them in a warm water light dish soap wash about 8x to clean the dirt off. If you have gritty greens, this means whom ever prepared them didn't wash them good. Smoked pork jowl will make a difference! You wont need to add any salt! Spice them up with a jalapeno. There are a lot of hood eatery finds. It's no whole foods, but when cooking soul food you can find everything that you need. I think its the only place you can buy a soda for only 30 cents. It's in the hood, where I grew up! #myroots

This is one of the biggest little store's I have been in in a long time and if you are looking for things to cook. You can find it here. I'm not talking about something from A box. But if you are looking for a box dinner you can find it to.....this is one place I like to stop and see what I can get at A very good price. My thanks for all the work you put into your service

THIS PLACE DON'T EVEN DESERVE THAT 1 STAR!!!! This place has the worst cashiers.. they are all sooo freaking rude and all look nasty in appearance. Not only are all the cashiers rude but most of the food on shelves are all outdated. I think my stop today will be the last I do at this place

This place is amazing! Great deals and good food, the manager is very nice and kind. I would recommend this place to anyone! Cheap meat cheap greens it's everything you would want for cheap

I've shopped at Otwell's since it opened in 1965. On Friday, 8/6/16, about 6:00pm, I was stopped not 30 seconds after entering the store. A young lady in a store apron who identified herself as the manager asked me to leave and go to Buy for Less to do my shopping. I don't have to be asked twice.
