I've been researching a bunch of Nigerian recipes after having Naija Wife Kitchen (please go if you haven't!!) and ended up here to get some goodies! I don't leave many reviews on grocery stores, but I had to with this place! It looks a little tinier than most grocery stores, but I'll bet you they have everything that you need if you're cooking African food up for the night. I didn't get his name, but he's the son of the owners of the store, and he was super helpful! I told him what dishes I wanted to make, and he even searched up the recipes on Youtube and pointed me to the ingredients I needed. Y'all, I 100% didn't know what half of these ingredients, and he very patiently told me what they were and how it's used! Super helpful and kind. I love learning about other cultures, and I especially love learning about their food. He shared that his family was Ghanaian too, so I guess I'm going to go down the rabbit hole of Ghanaian recipes now!!

This is the first African store I found when I first moved to OKC. The owner carry is a pretty wide variety of essentials to make most west African cuisine. The owner is from Ghana and is extremely helpful and very pleasant. This store carries a variety of native seasonings, and plenty of other items that you can only get back home. At the back of the store, shes got several deep freezers full of just about any meat, fish or frozen native veggies you can think of. She also has fresh AGEGE bread which is very tasty. HELPFUL HINTS:-5 years after the last reviewer mentioned, Yelp still has the wrong address for this place. The correct address is:Makola #1 Market2425 N Classen BlvdOKLAHOMA CITY, OK 73106Ph: 405-601-0463- They are closed on Sundays.-They take cards and apple pay- aside from food items, they also sell Fabrics, personal items (traditional sponges, creams, shea butter), movies, and more stuff that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

***Notice: the address on Yelp is wrong. This market is in the Jade Plaza on 24th/Classen***One of the disadvantages of Oklahoma City's layout and dependence on cars is that you can easily pass a hole-in-the-wall without notice. Luckily I was on foot and found Makola. It reminds me of a New York bodega, though it sells non-food items. I wanted to try new food though, so I went straight to that section. They have some bread that looks really good that I intend to buy next time (and now i regret not buying it when I went). They have a lot of spices, a number of which are unfamiliar to me, but the owners are very sweet and polite, and gave me an idea of the taste and what I could put it in. Because I LOVE spices, I bought something called khebab powder (and no, not the more familiar kebab seasoning). This is apparently a Ghanian blend. The lady said it was for meat and fish, but alas, I'm a vegetarian. What the hell though, I bought it anyway. After tasting it, I think it could easily go into lentils or beans. I also bought these African cookies called chinchin. They aren't overly sweet, and have a very pleasant aftertaste. The only real disadvantage is that it's a pretty small store and there isn't much room for a lot of merchandise. However... I noticed that just a block away is an abandoned building that seems to be the old Super Cao grocery store, which has grown exponentially and into its new location. I think with enough community support, this business could grow and offer even more. I'm proud to be the first reviewer, and I intend to go back.
