An outstanding restaurant that happens to be vegetarian and one of my favorite places to frequent when I am in Berkeley. I went here recently with three other people for a weekend dinner and we were able to get seats immediately. Our service was great, portion sizes are excellent, and Udupi Palace is extremely affordable. Our party ordered several dishes family-style-I particularly recommend the Paneer Makhani, Malabar Parotha, the Thali, and the Paper Dosa.I look forward to coming back to Udupi!

We really love this place, but it's been a while. Today, we picked up three different dosas that we ordered over the phone. The woman on the phone was so kind and accommodating as we asked a number of questions. We ordered the Mysore Masala Dosa ($12.50), the Udupi Special Spring Dosa (requested no potatoes- $12.95), and the Spinach Paneer Dosa ($13.95). All of the dosas come with the coconut chutney, sambar, and spicy sauce. I always order the masala dosa, and as usual, it was perfect! Classic choice. The spring dosa was probably my least favorite of the three (and it was still good, to be clear). This may have been because we asked for the potatoes to be nixed. The vegetables could've been sautéed for a bit longer. The spinach paneer dosa was a surprise favorite. Whoa! The seasoning and textures were unexpected and worked perfectly. I forgot how good this place was (it's very no-frills in terms of decor) and my mom, sister, and I all agreed we'd be back very soon!

My husband and I absolutely love this place. We often have spontaneous date nights now that our kids are getting older, and this restaurant is one of our top picks. We even made a memorable visit during a huge rainstorm; parking was tough, so we parked about six blocks away and ran the entire way. We forgot an umbrella and ended up soaked and a bit cold, but it was totally worth it!I have my go-to dish: the Spinach Masala Dosa. I order it every time because I love it so much and don't feel the need to try anything else. My husband alternates between the Mysore Masala Dosa and the House Curry Dosa. Although we stick to our favorites, it's clear from the packed restaurant that others are also enjoying a variety of dishes. It's always bustling with happy people savoring their meals.During our travels in India, I asked several hotels and restaurants if they could make me a Spinach Masala Dosa, but none have been able to replicate it. Sometimes they incorporate spinach into the dosa batter, making it green, or add something resembling Saag or Palak in the center, but it's just not the same. So, this dish seems to be uniquely special to Udupi Palace in Berkeley, CA. I must be Popeye's granddaughter because I love spinach so much!We always request extra sambar and often need more of their delicious tomato and coconut chutney, and the waitress is always very accommodating. I've almost always seen the same waitress there. She's very nice but a bit quiet. Last time, when she asked what we wanted, I just said "the usual," expecting her to ask for clarification, but she immediately listed off exactly what we both wanted. I felt a bit guilty not knowing her name, so I'll make sure to ask her next time. I feel like I should at least know her name if she knows our "usual" order! I also want to thank her for being such a gracious host. We really appreciate her service. Reminder: parking can be challenging depending on the time of day so plan accordingly.

I have driven past this place for years. I wish I had stopped sooner. Parking is street, so can be hit or miss. Service was friendly and helpful. Restaurant is vegetarian and most items can be made vegan.I ordered entirely way too much and it was all delicious. I really enjoyed the amount of small plates and street food options. Many items that you don't normally see I highly recommend ordering the samosa chaat. The Thali was very reasonable in price. I can't wait to return.

We had a wonderful dinner here on a Wednesday night! Excellent food; fast, friendly service; and a pleasant, casual setting.I loved my spinach paneer Dosa, and really enjoyed the coconut chutney and Sambar that came with it (the tomato chutney was too spicy for me). My 6 year old daughter enjoyed her idlies, and my elderly father liked his uthapam. The service was very responsive. I really appreciated the fact they brought out idly for my hungry child within a minute after I made the request and conveyed the urgency. The space is clean, casual, and reasonably spacious. I also appreciated the fact the bathroom was quite clean. Overall, we had a lovely meal here, and look forward to returning!

Calling all Vegans, Vegetarians, and food enthusiasts alike! I stumbled upon this low key South Indian restaurant recently with my best friend, and thought I'd share the love. For the price, you certainly get your money's worth here. The portion sizes are more than generous, like something straight out of a classic diner. My friend ordered the Onion and Peas Uttapam, and she loved it so much she had to take her bite size portion of leftovers home. I ordered the Special Rava Dosa--a CRISPY delight embedded with onion, and masala (yummy potato filling.) The accompanying chutneys and sambar made it extra delicious. Oh, and we couldn't resist ordering some idli and vada on the side. The idlis had this subtle sweetness that just hit the spot.In conclusion, a heartfelt thank you to Udupi Palace for a memorable dining experience. I hope to revisit in the future.P.S. South Indian cuisine is so much more than just dosas. There's a whole world of flavors waiting to be explored, and I'm on a mission to find the best spots. If you have any recommendations, I'm all ears!

My friend and I came by for some South Indian food to celebrate Diwali. We dropped by Sunday around 6 pm and only a couple tables were occupied, though it got busier as we were eating. The menu is fully vegetarian and focuses on South Indian dishes like vada, dosa, and uthappam, though they have offer some curries as well.My friend and I shared the thali ($15.95) and the Udupi combo ($14.95), which comes with either dosa/uthappam and idli + medhu vada. We got the masala dosa for the combo. The combo was good. There was a generous amount of potato filling inside the dosa, and we enjoyed both the vada and idli with the sambar. The curries in the thali were a bit hit and miss, as they usually are. My favorites were the green bean curry and the potato curry.I find the portions here a bit smaller than other South Indian places. My friend was full after the meal, but I wasn't fully satisfied and ended up snacking afterwards to get full.
