Sun Sang Supermarket

I was in Oakland for Hot Boys fried chicken & needed to do some grocery shopping so I stopped by Sun Sang Supermarket since it was close-by. The store is surprisingly clean & has tons of interesting products. I grabbed some fresh salmon & it was reasonably priced. When we cooked it, it doesn't give off fishy smell so you know it is the good kind. It also tasted fresh & not fishy. I also picked up some vietnamese goodies like rice paper, mama noodles, and five spices. The staff were friendly, too! I would definitely come again for high quality fish, meat, and reasonably priced asian pantry items. Good deal, service, and cleanliness :)

Good prices, nice selection, clean, and friendly staff. They have light and dark soy sauces, which aren't available at Safeway or other larger grocery stores. Fresh egg noodles and a big bag of bok choy.

This supermarket everything is super expensive, for example plastic bag everywhere in the United States even in the big shopping mall only 10cen/bag but here is 25cen its stupid and everything else like that, the orange bag ( in the bucket outdoor) in thien loi hoa market just $9/bag San sang for $13/bag sam thing same lbs it not different, I wonder in oakland only have a this market ?? I do not want to waste money here, they sell everything very expensive in an unusual way.

Good fresh merchandise, good service and excellent prices ... parking is convenient as well.

Small but good enough of a grocery store to me! They have ample produce and meat/fish and frozen foods as well as other grocery items! They're not as cheap as other small scale markets but they have their own parking lot! So that beats having to circle round and round Oakland Chinatown or putting your car on double park!

This is a place where you can find everything but Soul Food. From live bullfrogs to live every kind of fish for human consumption. You can have it friend on the spot. Don't expect any seasoning and the oil may be old but you can get your friend seafood in a box lined with foil. They get two stars cuz the staff is not very friendly to non-Asian shoppers. I have also been in situations where I have to ask a female manager to make the fish employees acknowledge that I'm standing in line for service and not Prince tickets.I also find this store crowded with merchandise which makes the aisles very narrow and provides an excuse for regulars to knock you out while trying to move past you. In addition, I notice that during holidays like Christmas, crab prices get sky high above $10 per pound and these crabs, although live, look black, have holes, and unhealthy. Costco has pretty crabs for $8.99 per pound during the holidays, so why bother & deal with nasty attitudes?

If you love cooking the various cuisines of the world like I do, you might greatly appreciate Sun Sang. They have lots of Asian ingredients and a parking lot that make this place super approachable. Because of the location it is way less busy than the markets in Chinatown, (but they dont have any dry bulk ingredients), and they don't have as wide range in selection of seafood like some of the markets in Chinatown. For those reasons this place is also much more cost effective than some of the larger markets.I've been shopping here over a decade, so this review is long overdue. Sun Sang has a decent selection of fresh fish and you can even choose live fish, live crabs and fresh oysters. The butchers remember me and they are so personable. I always meet new friends here as well, it's a very inviting place and because the butchers refuse to speak much English you end up talking with the other customers more than you would at your average market. The produce is always seasonal, fresh and affordable and I love that they will butcher, clean and fry up anything you want right there. They charge just the price of the meat even to fry it and the fried seafood along with the fresh bread they carry and a few refreshments are the makings of a perfect picnic. I always come for the fresh oysters though, a box of 5 dozen is around $50 and they are usually huge! Delicious and perfect for grilling.

Review #306 - 2018I can always count on Sun Sang to have all of my basic Asian ingredients whenever I run out.I probably come here once a month or so, in particular, to get my 50-pound bag of Thai jasmine rice.They have plenty of fresh fruits & veggies for those healthy eaters.They also have fish & meat for those meat eaters. They seem fresh enough each time I did buy them in the past. I haven't actually bought any meat from them since I started buying all my meat from Costco.Most of their groceries are pretty decently priced.My biggest concerns are the cleanliness of their products so I avoid buying the meat, especially ground meat. The aisles are pretty crowded and the parking lot is across the street. They don't have many shopping carts so I've always had to lug all my groceries across the street. Thank goodness they always have someone deliver & load the 50-pound rice bag to my car.

Been going here when I was a child, tagging along with my parents and grandparents, now I'm the one holding it down. $10 credit card minimum. Kind of hard to meet that minimum when groceries are so cheap! If you are out of cash and need to make that minimum, treat yourself to those packs of Shin Ramyun Instant Noodle Soup!They also have a fish service where they clean, fry, etc. for you and it definitely saves the trouble of you odorizing your home!

Very friendly people with safe parking lot to park my car. Would recommend highly. Big supermarket with lots of selection.
