Really quaint, small hole in the wall gem in Albany! Come as soon as you can because it can easily get packed. Fresh items on the menu and on display as soon as you walk in. My friends enjoyed their sushi rolls and seafood. I had a huge bento box with all the pretty decorations as well. Delicious teriyaki, fluffy soft rice and great portion sizes! Highly recommend this spot!

I came to Sugata a lot as a kid because it was one of the only Japanese restaurants close to my home. I always found it to be average in terms of food and service, and tonight was the same.In the last decade since I've been here the inside has changed a lot! It used to be dark and there was a tatami mat (which I didn't recall seeing). Now, the restaurant is well-lit with many tables nearby. Some Japanese artwork was posted around, but overall a neighborhood restaurant vibe. I found the service to be fine. We got our orders in quickly, weren't checked on during, then our tables bussed and check paid when done. Food came out relatively fast and quite hot!Since it was raining, comfort food was on my mind. My friend and I shared the Agedashi Tofu and I had the Nabe Udon. The tofu was good, temperature hot, and delicate. The udon wasn't impressive--salty broth but a decent amount of chicken inside. The portion was pretty big and I got it to go. My friend enjoyed her sushi roll. Sugata Japanese Restaurant is standard for a neighborhood Japanese spot, but nothing impressive. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, only if others wanted to go. It's located on Solano Ave. with street and neighborhood parking around.

Sugata is my favorite place! Such a hidden gem. The staff are so attentive and lovely. Our favorite are the sugata roll, salmon skin hand roll, bento boxes (their tempura is amazing!), but everything is yummy

This is one of my favorite sushi places, everytime I visit is always a good atmosfera and delicious food, today surprisely they had Sugata sushi which was amazing! Also no complain about services which was pretty friendly and fast. Thanks Sugata!!

Service was fast and servers were very pleasant and attentive. Our hot tea was filled with quite a few times which I loved. The quality of the fish is good, I've had better but ide probably rate this at 8 out of 10. The place is clean and small but very clean.

Sugata changed owners a few years ago and the first experience I had with the new ownership was unimpressive so I stopped going. Recently, the past year or so, I've given it a several more tries and it's been great. The sugata bento has gone up in price, but it's a reasonable deal for $42. There's more than enough to feed two people. The nigiri with the bento excellent as was the dragon roll and California roll. It's now back on my local sushi go to list.

Great example of Japanese cuisine. Japanese food is so much more than sushi and rice bowls and Sugata captures that spirit. Normally, I would give a place like this 4 stars. It's a solid 4-star place. But I can't believe Yelp has it at only 3.5! That must be rectified. It's a travesty when I see other places with 4 or more stars that aren't half as good. This is a good restaurant and if you're craving Japanese cuisine, you need to try this place.FOOD: Loved our order. We got a wide variety of items thanks to the generosity of friends and a love of Door Dash. I got the bento box dinner which comes with miso soup and salad and rice (which Door Dash doesn't show). I had the salmon teriyaki and tempura combo and it was delicious! The portion size was very generous. Literally it was about twice as much salmon as I normally get and the tempura included shrimp! Excellent flavor too. Not swimming in teriyaki but more than enough to make it flavorful. My daughter got one of the sushi rolls and really enjoyed it which is saying something. She is very particular by her own admission about sushi. We both agreed we would return here soon.SERVICE: Everything was delivered hot and packaged neatly and attractively. Like I said, generous portions only added to our enjoyment. Everything we needed was put together quickly, too.COST: Great food to cost ratio! Definitely felt we got our money's worth and then some. Again, will definitely come back!

Walk through a cute door and you will be greeted by a full sushi bar on your right. Udon noodles were typical. The sashimi was fresh.

Very consistent food quality. Nothing is outstanding, but everything is good. If you have a party of four or more, definitely make reservations because this is a small restaurant.
