Was just chatting with a friend about how awesome the food was here.......about 10 years ago! Tried eating here twice shortly before covid, and both times were very disappointing.Smaller portions, and the ingredients tasted like they'd been riding a few days too many on the Sysco truck.Portumex totally went off my radar, until I recently read they would be re-opening soon.I look forward to their rebirth & giving them another chance!

I've been going to Portumex for over 30 years, and I love it! Yes, the original owners retired, and yes, the new owner is a relative. They have kept the same menu, and in my opinion, it's as good as it ever was, which is fabulous! The ambiance is informal, and there's more seating than meets the eye on first entrance. There are two indoor areas to sit, and if you come in good weather, they have an enormous garden/patio out in the back with lots of seating, and it's charming! The service is unobtrusive but nice.This is one of my very favorite places anywhere.

I've been coming to Portumex forever! Although we heard they might be under new ownership, while in the area we wanted to live our nostalgia and give it a try again. So happy we did!We started with an order of fresh guac and chips, then moved onto cheese enchiladas with all the fixins, and finished with chicken fajitas. Everything was so fresh, piping hot, and just like I remembered. I'm usually pretty particular when it comes to guacamole, but this was on par to some of my favorite starters. The refried beans were nice and creamy, rice flavorful, cheese oozing, red sauce for the enchiladas super savory, and the chicken fajitas were clean and hearty.Service was quick and kind, with an order-at-the-register vibe, street parking still available outside, and a menu that checks off value and quality. Happy to continue and support Portumex!

A staple in Richmond where you start first to began your Mexican food experience on 23rd street and beyond.The city of pride & purpose best known burrito spot!

This is not your usual mexican food but this place has been here over 30 years and that's hard to say for some bay area staple places. The food is nostalgic, like someone in your family whose house you went to for a taste of home. I love the same outdoor seating. Let me also say I am not a fan of Tex-Mex so i'm not a fan of the super canned tomato salsa they have. Or the green salsa they put on things but hey!

I've been coming to this place since I was about 16 yrs old which means over 30 years now, I was going here a lot when I was pregnant with my first daughter. I use to come with old friends. But I'm so sad to say I believe they are going. Out of business. I've called several times no answer and even went by with my youngest daughter which she loves their nachos! I've always loved their chicken fajitas! I'm so sad because this place holds a very nostalgic place in my heart good memories and delicious food. I wish the owner would have at least left a message on the answering machine or posted going out of business. It's sad to see. I hope I'm wrong and maybe there was a family hardship or something either way. Let us the people who kept you in business all these years know what's up?!

I usually get the burrito tried the enchiladas dinner it was HORRIBLE rice and enchiladas do NOT taste like authentic Mexican food I have big celery pieces in my rice the enchiladas taste exactly likela tortilla maybe the cook had a bad day I don't know

I really like the concha! Old fashioned flour tortilla shell comes with rice beans and meat... add lettuce crema and guacamole for perfection. Be careful with the roasted salsa (not red, not green but a combo) it's f*cking spicy!

This place was really good many years ago but unfortunately the food is no longer acceptable !The food is bland and missing flavor!!

I ordered some food on doordash, one of the items being an order of guac & chips. Here is what a $2 order of guacamole and chips gets you, two OUNCES of guac (see attached photo). Are you serious or right now?? That is so stingy. I could have bought 3 avocados for what they charge for this 2 ounces of guac. Also the chips taste like they were fried with OLD oil that hasn't been changed in a week. The red salsa they sent with the guac tastes like it's supplemented with ketchup.
