Oakland Halal Meat & Produce

Update: unfortunately not the same feedback I had a few years ago. Owners are great. Price of meat is crazy here now. Goat is $13/lb? Other locations, $11/lb.Also in the absence of the owners, the Pakistani man running the shop is highly divisive. I've heard him talk to some customers in a few occasions now basically bashing their cultures especially heard him putting down Indians as he raves about how awesome Pakistan is. He was also telling this white womanly who was buying goat for her indian husband to cook and he was going off saying how Her husband doesn't really know how to cook apparently as he's not from Pakistan lol!Dude take a step back and let's not be so divisive. Unfortunately it's ruining the experience for the owners who have worked so hard to create such this family owned local business.

I don't look for goat very often but am making Barbacoa for a special occasion. First, I called around and all of the other shops were unable to source any goat right now, at least those that even bothered to pick up the phone. I called Oakland Halal and they picked up the phone and confirmed they had goat immediately. The shop is small but the butcher behind the counter is awesome. I told him I wanted either a leg or a shoulder. He told me how the different cuts would very and when I told him what I was making we agreed on the leg. He cut it to my exact weight request and informed me that not only was the meat fresh it was local (I think that matters). I was out of there in minutes and with a giant mango on the house! How could you ask for more.

The uncle here was extremely nice and caring. We had a few dishes we needed to make and a large order of meat needed! We were able to get halal chicken, lamb chops, and ground beef along with some produce. The butcher uncle was also just a really pleasant person to talk to! The other customers were also nice - This shop is located in a vibrant part of the neighborhood and if you're looking for good quality meat while you shop for your spices, this is the place! :)

Although the store is small, the space is well utilized. The fresh produce section has all the basic essentials and the meat selection is great. I picked up a whole 3 lb chicken and 3 lbs of ground beef for $25. The ground beef was prepared right in front of me so I knew that I was actually getting beef with no surprises. The service is excellent. The man, who may have been the owner, is so friendly. He also gave me a couple of bananas as I was leaving. I was pleasantly surprised! There is street parking with pay machines and parking in the adjacent residential area. Cash and credit are both accepted here.

I have been patronizing this market for a few years and have been very happy with the results. There is no pretense, just good meat and service. In particular, I love goat meat, and this market has it. You see the it hanging and tell them what you want, how you want it and they prepare it for you. If you want ground meat, they grind it for you. No pink slime here just good halal meat cut like you request it.They also have a few frozen items and some fruits and vegetables that are in season. Like the Camille said, I too usually leave with a few extra goodies stashed in my bag. You get a very good feeling shopping here.

I shop Oakland Halal for quality produce at a tremendous value. Oakland Halal is an independently owned ethnic market with special care taken in their butcher department. Tomatoes are usually $0.69 a pound and are flavorful and delicious. Avocadoes are plentiful and way cheaper than their supermarket cousins. Spend twenty dollars here and leave with enough fresh ingredients to last you several days when you combine them with the selection found at the neighbouring Oasis. The people are so nice and sweet here. They usually fill my grocery bags with extra goodies!!!

I have been coming here for about a year and the meat is great. I usually buy large quantities each time I go (50 lbs or more) and I have found his prices to be very fair. The selection is great, whole fresh hens, fresh lamb, boneless beef and lamb roasts. I especially like to get ground boneless skinless chicken breast. I have arthritis so I also get alot of bones here because they are expertly cut and fresh to order. I make bone broth everyweek for pain and symptom management. The produce is also at great prices! The tomatoes are always inexpensive and I always buy the fresh peeled garlic in the ziploc bag. Fresh mint in a huge bag for $2.00, usually he throws in a bunch of bananas on my way out the door. Or oranges. LITTLE KNOWN SECRET you can get extremely high quality steelhead trout fresh caught in Coos Bay Oregon in their freezer. This is great fish that you can't find anywhere and I always load up when I stop in.

We went out of our way to search for this little corner shop in hopes of finding a good flavorable roasting chicken. We were ignored for about 5 minutes then asked about a chicken. The one person behing the counter looked at us quizically and mumbled something about next door. He had no chickens. In fact, the only thing in the counter were a few whole rib cages of what might have been lamb. Nothing else. I asked what else he had and he just shrugged and pointed out the door.. Real friendly place---hah!

Excellent quality meat and service. The ground beef is very very lean and the owners have excellent customer service.

Always come here for my meat and produce! Definitely my go to store. All of their stuff is very fresh and the owners are very pleasant and nice people. Highly recommend everyone check it out!
