About three weeks ago I received an invite on Facebook to attend the opening event of a photo exhibit by Philip Hennen at the Joyce Gordon Gallery. I have never met Mr. Hennen, but I was always impressed with his photos titled Mood City posted on that website in one of the groups I belong to. His main focus were the urban areas of Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco, which brought back memories of growing up in the area. I love his work, especially the ones of Oakland Chinatown and West Oakland. The Joyce Gordon Gallery is a well lit gallery in the downtown area of Oakland. The ambiance is a comfortable one without being pretentious. What an amazing gallery to have works of the African American artists on display. Indeed this gallery and Sanchez Contemporary (Uptown) are welcome sites to the City of Oakland.I usually don't head back to Oakland in the evening, but Mood City beckoned my husband and me to attend this event and to show support to a Facebook friend. The presentation of the photos was beautiful. I finally met Mr. Hennen through another Facebook friend, Vanessa Williams, who was also at the event. Much appreciation to this gentleman who was very pleasant and engaging in conversation with everybody attending this event. The minor drawback to this gallery is trying to find street parking in the area. Public transportation (AC or BART) is easier than driving around the block or blocks in search of a parking space. Then there is also a parking garage close by.When in the area, stop by this gallery and admire the works on display of local artists.

This is a cool space that is conveniently located near downtown Oakland (transit hub). The main space itself is wheelchair accessible, but as for the single gender-neutral bathroom, I'm not so sure it'd be easy to get in there due to the angles and width of the doors, especially if your mobility equipment is wider than a typical doorframe. They have some nice artworks of black and African or African diaspora people on display right now. I came to the gallery as a part of an evening event in BlackSolidarityWeek and I appreciate that they allow this space to be used for such events and talks. It seems there's a lower level that requires stairs to access, did not get to see what was in there at the time.

Happened to stop in here whilst waiting for Analog to open. I can't say I'm a huge fan of art galleries, but I do pop into them from time to time. I only perused the top floor briefly, but some great examples of local artists and local subjects, including downtown SF. Most interesting of all is the textile artwork, by Joyce Gordon; I don't know that I've see much contemporary that's like this. I didn't peer too closely at the prices; they probably would have scared me.Worth a look in though, if you're passing by.

Joyce Gordon is truly passionate about art and community in Downtown Oakland. My stepdad and my sister have both purchased beautiful pieces of art from Joyce Gordon Gallery and were thrilled with the high level of care and competency by everyone at the gallery. Our cafe and gallery, Awaken Cafe, is just a couple of doors down and since we opened we have enjoyed Joyce's support, friendship and collaboration and look forward to many more years of creating a fun and inviting art community Downtown.

Joyce Gordon Gallery has been a fixture of the downtown Oakland art scene for over five years. Her shows are thoughtfully planned and well-curated. Joyce herself brings a wonderful sense of community to the neighborhood...and also knows how to throw a party. Check out her well-attended First Friday events!

As good--or better-- than most of the galleries in New York!!! Joyce and her staff really know their stuff and in today's art world, that is no easy task. All the shows are lively and spot on, showing excellent taste with a pinch of 'edge'. Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves for their next show.

Very cool museum space, basement, wall space, plenty of on street parking. Works well to bring in catering, live music, readings, artworks and even a party. Lets all work together to make this world a better place.

I found her very unprofessional. I was very disappointed with my experience with Joyce Gordon. I will just leave it at that. I saw another post that prompted me , I had a similar experience, I was just very disrespected and hurt . I will never set foot in there again. It is too bad she has some good artist.
