JJ's Fish and Chicken

Why JJ's? Because there comes a time when a fast food fish sandwich from the larger chain restaurants just aren't as fulfilling anymore. There is a real difference in eating a real piece of fish instead of a squared block of fish masquerading as a fish fillet that brings us a lot closer to being homemade. The food is very good here. Although the surroundings are not the greatest, restaurants like this are fully appreciated by the local community as well as many others. I basically come for the fish but they do offer a wide selection of other things. The service was very good, as it was not busy when I arrived however I did notice a lot of people who called in their orders ahead of time walking in. The city of Oakland has many great places to eat, this is just one of them.

This "J J's Fish and Chicken" place is located in West Oakland in a small strip mall. It's a rough area of Oakland, so be aware of your surroundings. While I'm working, I often drive up and down West Grand, but never have time to stop. But I got interested in trying their food after watching YouTube videos about J J's Fish & Chicken in other states. On a Saturday, I stopped by and ordered:- Chicken Legs and Wings Combo (w/ fries)- Small Fish Combo, Catfish & Whiting Fish (w/Fries)I agree with the other reviews, the fish is good. The chicken is nothing special. If I order again, I would just order the fried catfish. That catfish was FRESH! The meat was firm and flaky, not fishy or mushy. The Whiting fish was also fresh, and not fishy. Value wise, you get alot of food in the small combo. That container was ready to burst open. The "3 Wings/3 Legs" Combo was also packed full, but lacked flavor. I was expecting some sort of seasoning, but the chicken was bland. I guess that's why they give you lots of hot sauce. Our visit to this soul food spot in Oakland had its ups and downs. Unfortunately, the catfish and whiting we ordered weren't cooked all the way through, which was a letdown because they had the potential to be quite good had they been properly cooked.We opted for the small/large combos, which all come with fries. We also decided to splurge a bit and paid extra for a side of Mac and cheese. However, I have to say, the Mac and cheese was a disappointment - it was bland and watery, lacking the rich, cheesy goodness we were hoping for.

I repeatedly tried to order a large amount of food through Grubhub, but the screen kept freezing up, and there was no way for me to order seafood sauce and/or ketchup with it. Unfortunately, I became frustrated and just went to another restaurant. Maybe I'll try again some other time?

I'm from Long Beach, Ca. so we don't have a JJ's in the LA area so when i came out here and had a taste of JJs i've been hooked every since i get it almost every month... lol sometimes i don't like how stingy they are with the lemon powder seasoning ontop of the chicken i might have to buy my own bottle at this point but nevertheless i love the chicken fresh and hot. the customer service is always fast and they are so responsive and respectful and the ambiance is just like being in LA eating good chicken in the hood

The best fried catfish here and love the tartar sauce . The macaroni salad is good. Has a nice flavor. I love coleslaw. That's good. Fries are good and I love that they give slices of bread with the fish.

Usually go to the one in Sacramento but today found myself in Oakland visiting my great uncle X (sn, he's black panther hence the last name X... its alot of history, black history when we do lunch.) We went to his usual laundry spot and there's JJs . last time I went I gave em 3 stars, this time was better so I am going with 4. I liked it a lot, and very convenient to eat while waiting for laundry. Yay multitasking. This location stays on brand with the huge portions --we ate whiting cause I like it better than catfish. Also got jumbo shrimp fries bread.... Tried their lemonade which I never have seen it was good. Dessert was chocolate cake, idunno why but it wasn't moist enough for me. All in all thought, twas Pretty good. Not bad.

They were a'ight. You pay $50 for 2 seafood dinners, and they act like it's a huge deal to give you enough condiments. My husband asked for extra ketchup and hot sauce. He didn't even get the normal ration, lol. The server even gave him an attitude when he put the one item in the bag, lol. We didn't notice til we got back to the hotel. The area is a little sketchy, and the little sad pieces of catfish nuggets were about the size of popcorn shrimp. And... I asked for oysters and got shrimp. Lesson learned: Check your back before leaving, lol.Again, if a person is paying this kind of money, the service should be phenomenal. Instead, the food is just "meh," and they treat you like they're doing you a favor by serving you. I came all the way from AZ, and I'm from LA, and I'm a big girl; I KNOW good seafood. You can't have "ok" food and half-@$$ service--not a great combination. I'd endure great food for that, but this spot ain't it for me. Just sayin.

My husband got fish and gumbo from the JJ's in Antioch. Best gumbo I ever had. Now I can stop making it myself and just go to JJ's!

The look is the same at each restaurant rather you're in Oakland or Richmond. It is clean.They have a good selection of food. I'm satisfied with their food and cost. They're located in the minority area.
