Hui Lau Shan is a dessert store that I had passed by multiple times while walking around in Berkeley, and even though I was always intrigued I didn't have the chance to check it out until not long ago. While the inside is pretty small, there is some seating available and we were able to grab a booth to the side of the counter. I decided to get the Mango Chewy Ball as it was one of their signature dishes. The mangos were fresh and sweet, while the chewy balls offered a nice texture with the fruit. This place is definitely a good post-dinner spot if you want to top off your meal with some dessert. Highly recommend checking Hui Lau Shan out if you're a mango lover!

Really excited to try this store after LOVING a similar fruit + glutinous ball + pudding Asian dessert combo I got from a restaurant called 三样子 (san yang zi) in Chongqing, China this past summer. First impressions: small store with only a counter and a couple of tables for dine-in. I bought my food through Snackpass, but there is a kiosk at the front to place your order as well. Staff was super friendly.I got A2: Mango Romance, and while it was pretty good, it was pretty much what you'd expect. The portions were much smaller than I'd realized - you get a little bit of everything: sizeable mango chunks, glutinous rice balls, mango mochi, mango pudding. For a hot summer day, it was refreshing! The mango was slightly tangy, but I guess they weren't super in season when I went. Next time, I'd order one of the bigger menu items instead - I got A2 because I felt very indecisive, but I think a bigger menu item's got more bang for your buck.

Great dessert spot in Berkeley next to CAL. Ordered the K4 Fresh Milk Taro Swirl with Sago for my mom. They made it less sweet and it was refreshing.

Delicious mango items! I tried the mango and coconut sago which had perfectly ripe mangos with a not too sweet coconut sago mix. Will definitely be back and am curious about this non-mango rice items.

Mango Swirl: SO yummy. mango + floral tea = WMango Romance: like a sampler of their different treats. yum but small.Really tiny store with about 4 seats? Service was fast and desserts were easy to order. I would deffooooo come back purely for the mango swirl.

Really sweet mango treats for anyone to enjoy! I don't usually like coconut shavings but the mango/mochi was so good it didn't matter.

I've always wanted to try Hui Lay Shan but every time I drove by it, the line was way too long so after 3 attempts, I finally got to try it. I think the South Bay locations are just busier because when I went to the Berkeley location, I was shocked to see no line. FYI - there isn't really a place to eat the dessert inside and parking is terrible so I dropped my friends off and drove around while they got our dessert and we ended up eating it in the car. I already had high expectations for it but it exceeded it. It is hands down my favorite dessert spot now!! I got A4. Mango Chewy Ball. The mango was sooo sweet, the mochi was so chewy and it just went really well with the ice cream. Can't wait to be back to try the other things on their menu!

After my last review with the hair in the pudding, the manager reached out to me and was very apologetic - she mentioned a new employee wasn't wearing a hat/hair net that day, and she assured me that it wouldn't happen again. I appreciated her transparency and I understand mistakes happen. I ended up going two more times since that last review, once about a month ago and once last night. Happy to say the last two trips were hair-free and I'm enjoying all their sweet treats again! My go to is still D9, the one with coconut and crystal jelly, but last night we had the pudding again, and tried their mochi for the first time! Their mochi has great texture and flavor (has a hint of coconut flavor) and a little bit of actual mango inside. They were sold out of the pancake but hoping to try mango pancake next time. Will be back for our monthly D9 runs - will update my reviews if we try the pancake next time!

I finally got to try this place and I was super impressed by the variety of options here. I got the mango & coconut juice with crystal jelly, and I could really taste the quality of the ingredients. The coconut stood out because of how creamy yet icy it was. It is less like a juice and more like a smoothie/sorbet texture. I'm not sure how they even made it! It paired well with the mango.I also liked my friend's watermelon drink because of how light and refreshing it was. My drink got a little too heavy because of the coconut cream, and we even scooped some coconut into his and it instantaneously improved his drink too! And the biggest compliment of all: it's not too sweet!
