I came into the store to buy hair dye called Herbatint on Friday, 10/18 to cover up my grey hairs that are along my hairline, temples and above my ears. My mom had been using that brand to touch up her grey hairs for many, many years, probably 20+ years or so. She used to have very thick and full hair. However, her hair had visibly thinned out in the past several years. She has some balding on her crown which partially could be attributed to aging, but I'm almost certain that years of Herbatint use had mainly contributed to her hair loss and thinning.I decided to finally give it a try since I figured it was all natural and it couldn't be that bad considering it's sold in a health food store. It was a little pricier than drug store hair dye at $21, so I thought the quality was superior.I was unfortunately mistaken. I left it on my greys for 30 minutes. As I was waiting, I noticed the areas that I dyed were very itchy and uncomfortably tingly. I also started to feel ill and a bit lightheaded which was odd as I never experienced that with a hair dye in my life. I had a bad gut feeling, so I researched the ingredients on the box. Turns out, it has 2 very toxic, carcinogenic ingredients that can cause severe allergic dermatitis and blistering of the skin. These ingredients are PPD and Ethanolamine. Ethanolamine is apparently more toxic than ammonia and has been shown to cause extensive hair damage and hair loss. I researched further to find out that these chemicals can cause cancer, hair breakage, and even bald spots. I was completely shocked and I rinsed it out immediately! When I got out of the shower, I noticed my hairline was very red and irritated, something that had never occurred after I dyed my hair. And, I have used many different boxed hair color brands over the years. My hair also felt as if I had bleached it. It looked and felt like straw, and it didn't even cover my greys entirely! I was extremely disappointed and had high hopes for satisfying results. This was the worst hair dye I had ever used in my entire life. It had a very faint smell of bleach as well, and I did not like the weird goopy gel consistency of the mixture. I didn't even bother trying to go back to the store to talk to the manager as one lady I spoke with over the phone suggested. I spent $23 including tax. Since it was used, I knew I wasn't going to get a refund. And I didn't care about store credit since I don't shop there. So, in the garbage it went.Bottom line is: BE CAREFUL with Herbatint!!! I honestly can't comprehend how a product that has such harmful ingredients and side effects can be sold at a health food store. They should remove that product from their shelves ASAP!

Good health food store in Castro Valley!!!Located in the Castro Village Shopping Center, it's a rather small store packed from top to bottom with all things health related. The prices, well, they are a little higher. And if you can't find something, they are more than willing to assist you. I've been here a few times and have always found what I was looking for.

Competitive pricing for a small store and a staff that knows how to answer specific questions about the products. They even offered to order something for me a while back so that k could just pick it up from them instead of the hassle of online ordering. I really appreciated that! They have a wide selection of items, including high protein/low carb items. They also have a lot of different supplements to choose from as well as fresh produce. This is a great local store to pick up all your health related food/supplement products.

what would had been a 4-5 star review has been reduced to one star for the behavior I've received by a staff member.I went in to buy sea-moss lavender lemonade, since it's been a product I have recently enjoyed. I bought 3, since it's for home and an energy boost at work. The cashier who rung me up greeted me, and I told her I was ready with my lemonade. I start pulling out my wallet when she grabs the item to ring up the item, and questioned the price of it. She looks over at her coworker and asks her directly "has it always been this cheap?" and the coworker answered they weren't sure. She immediately starts to scrape off the price and kept repeating the price didn't look right, when I mention that the last time I had visited(2 weeks ago), the price was around $13 or so. She looks again at the other coworker and back at me saying "you're right, I must be thinking of something of something else," quickly grimaces and gives me the total. Although it sounds like a simple interaction, what could had been a simple question, turned into a micro aggression from her part. I don't understand what the hostility was for since that was the price of the other lemonades, and I'm greatly disappointed with how something as simple as a healthy beverage has become something to gatekeep from others. Will not be shopping there anymore personally, and disappointed.
