First time here I was invited to come here for a bday dinner Dinner was nice our chef was awesome nice perk that he spoke Spanish Chef did some cool tricks and was very personable Venue is clean and nicely decorated Parking is easy to find but the parking lot is gravel and kinda rocky I arrived early to avoid traffic and I hung out at the bar. There is NO HAPPY HOUR HERE but at any rate the Asian pear martinis are great Bartender is friendly Bar is kinda limited when it comes to tequilas and cognacs Food is cool Obviously made to order Prices are reasonable It was a nice dinner for my friends son and he enjoyed it thoroughly

I waited until morning to write this review so that I could be thoughtful in how I describe our experience. We live in Humboldt County and came to the city to celebrate our daughter's 12th birthday. We were looking for a hotel with an indoor pool. Surprisingly, there are not a lot in the area. We chose to stay at the hotel in the Berkeley Marina because it had an indoor pool and because of the Teppanyaki restaurant nearby. We were delighted when we realized that that you actually get a free meal on your birthday! On the drive down I made reservations for 7:00. This was a little late for our family (we also have a 9 year old), but we were traveling and wanted to make sure that we would be able to make it. When we walked in to the restaurant I used the bathroom. It was pretty dingy, not the cleanest and smelled like pee. I was surprised since these types of restaurants are usually more upscale. We were early so we sat in the front waiting area which I think also smelled kind of like urine. I assured myself that it was just coming from the nearby bathroom. Either way, it's still pretty gross. We were seated on time, just a few minutes after 7:00. We were seated with one other couple at one table. The table next to us was filled a few minutes later and a third table was filled about ten minutes after us. Our table was the first to be seated. The table right next to us seemed to have a much more attentive server that came over right away and got them drinks. It was a while before we had waters and were asked to order. The next hour and a half progressed in this same manner. We watched the table right next to us get served beverages and appetizers while we waited patiently. Remember, we were seated at 7:00. At 7:30 a chef arrived and began cooking for the table next to us. We watched the chef prepare entire meals for the table right next to us while we waited patiently sitting around an empty grill with empty water glasses. The third table that was seated after us also had a chef preparing their food. Around 7:50 our server came out and said that our chef was running behind so they would bring us some potstickers. That was a nice gesture even though we didn't want them. Our son had ordered one of the few things on the menu he was willing to eat and was waiting as patiently as he could for it to be cooked for him.The next time we saw our server was at 8:20 when she came to bring water. At this point I asked her how much longer it might be until someone began cooking our food that we had ordered an hour earlier. She said that it would be at least another 20 minutes. TWENTY MINUTES before they even arrived. Remember, we were seated at 7:00 and she was saying that they wouldn't start cooking until 8:40. Also remember that the two tables next to us were seated after us and their chefs were finishing up preparing their meals. We had just watched the entire show from behind. At this point, we told the sever that we couldn't wait and would have to leave. Our nine year old was starting to fall apart. He had waited so patiently for so long and was so hungry. We simply had to go. She said something about how the chef that just cooked in front of us said that he could start cooking for us immediately once he finished and we declined. She tried to justify something about how the reservation time isn't when they start cooking and sometimes you have to wait. We understand and respect that, but waiting for an hour and forty minutes while the tables seated after you get their food feels unreasonable. When I made the reservation online, it says that your table reservation is reserved for an hour and half. That is because that's how long the whole experience should take. That is not how long you should wait to begin the dinner show. The staff was apologetic and didn't try to charge us for our soup and salad. We appreciated that but left hungry and disappointed with the entire situation. I am still surprised that they didn't do anything more to make it right. It was our daughter's birthday and we spent the evening sitting at an empty grill with strangers watching a chef from behind prepare food for people that had been seated after us. Luckily, we had plenty of road trip snacks in our hotel room and just walked back to our room and ate those. So I guess the silver lining is that we saved $150.

This is one of my favorite Japanese steakhouses. Very intimate setting, the ambience is beautiful off of the water and the food is absolutely delicious. The service here is always excellent +

Hibachi is always fun! It's a pretty nice location right on the Berkeley Marina and was pretty busy. I do think they don't do as many tricks as say Benihana but maybe that's completely dependent on your chef? Or maybe cause we didn't have any kids at our table so that toned it down? Not super sure, but would have appreciated more of a show tbh. The food was alright, nothing spectacular but I definitely did eat it all!

I made a reservation online, which was really easy. We arrived about 15 mins. before the reservation, but had to waiting until our last person arrived before we could be seated. Once our last person arrived, we were seated. The hostess/waitress was nice and pleasant. The wait before the Chef came was minimal. Once the Chef arrived, he went over our order to make sure everything was correct. I ordered a steak and noticed he asked the others how they wanted their steak prepared but didn't ask me. Half way through the cook/show I guess he noticed he didn't get my steak so he went and got one. No biggie because it didn't take him too much time to prepare it and he was apologetic. They food was great, drink was great, and atmosphere was nice. I would go back.

The first thing I noticed was that the restaurant was in an out-of-the-way place near some docks where I had never ventured before. Not conducive to a spur-of-the-moment, hey, let's stop there. I never knew this was there. (No points against them, I just thought I would mention it. We also found a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge near the restaurant.) We showed up early but had to wait as they did not have enough staff and they timed it for our reservation slot. Totally fair.We went to the bar and I ordered a Mai Tai. I have not had one in years and it was really good. The interior is looking outdated but I was there for the food. We were seated a the cooking table and noticed a table next to us with very little interaction from the guests. After they had completed their meal, the chef left and returned a short time later to our table. We were a party of four and there was another party of four at the table as well. Both groups were into the entire presentation and cooking and had a great time. Some people at the table were not fans of Teriyaki but he had them try his teriyaki he made at the table. Both individuals ended up being fans. The food was good and the rice I loved. The steak was a little dry but I had it with the Teriyaki sauce and it made a difference. I also had the chicken and it was tasty as well. If I was in the area again, I would stop by and have a bite. It was a fun experience with the preparation of the food and really, that's why I go to these types of restaurants as it is unique.

I have read the reviews, and resisted coming back here after several years passed, but it was my son's 18th birthday and it was a perfect spot for a batch of teens and my family.Yes, the place needs a facelift. The carpets and paint desperately needs to be refreshed. However, the food was awesome and the hostess that greeted us on a Monday night couldn't have been more efficient and friendly. Our chef, Edgar, was superb and kept our group entertained with the usual tricks of egg in the pocket, steaming onion volcano and impressive flames! I mean how much can you do with a stack of raw onion rings??!We had the menu covered with calamari, sashimi, chicken wings, pot stickers and shrimp and mushrooms appetizers. For entrees we had several teriyaki steaks, rib eye, NY steak, combo rib eye and lobster and filet mignon combo and teriyaki steak and shrimp combos! All the dishes were very good! The meat was amazing! My family taste tested each other's steaks and all of them were good. The lobster was sweet and succulent and served in the shell on your plate, the shrimp perfectly cooked and the apps were really fun to eat. The calamari was crispy with fun tentacles to eat, and the wings were breaded and fried just right, then tossed in a delicious sauce. The only issue with the meal was they were out of wasabi for the sashimi, but everything else was spot on.This is the go to place for a fun family or friend dinner!

Hana Japan has been our tradition for birthday celebrations for many years, and we always leave happy and satisfied. Do not let the bad reviews shy you away from this establishment. As a person who has been coming here for years, let this review provide some guidance for future visits to come! My family and I made a 6pm reservation on 7/3 for my boyfriend's birthday. We were helped by the hostess with red hair (I did not get her name), and she was very flexible and understanding when it came to sudden changes being made to our reservation! While we were waiting, we ordered drinks at the bar and the bartender was knowledgeable, welcoming, and makes very strong drinks lol (THANK YOU!)Once we were ready to go, the hostess led us to our table and we ordered appetizers to start. Our server (I also did not get her name) provided great service. She was attentive, fast, and checked up on us an ample amount of times to make sure we were ok! She was even on top of it by offering second rounds of drinks and consistently bussing empty plates and glasses off our table. We were then greeted by our hibachi chef Juan. He was quick on his feet while also constantly engaging with us, providing a fun and entertaining show! Majority of us requested for our steak to be medium rare and omg he delivered.. we were all so impressed by how perfect our steaks were cooked! He finished off by leaving an onion heart on my plate and told me "don't break my heart" lol I love it! Once we were done with our meal, our server brought out ice cream for the birthday boy and sang happy birthday alongside us.. even the surrounding tables joined along. The vibes here are just always great all around. Thank you to our server, Juan, and all the other workers who helped us by providing excellent service for my family and I. The birthday boy definitely had a great time, and so did the rest of us.
