I love the meat here and recently tried their seafood which was also phenomenal. A Trout that tasted like I caught it myself that day. I don't get down there often but when I do I always try to stop in.

I first started going to Baron's their Alameda location, but have adopted the Berkeley location these days. Everything is always fresh, they do a lot of the cleaning and cutting in-house, they'll give you chicken carcasses for making stock for free, everyone is professional, knowledgeable, cheerful and knows how to cook a bit, I trust their advice on what cuts could be best for what I"m trying to do (when i do these crazy experiments), and I'm glad that they're here in Berkeley!

This Oakland location provides a wonderful opportunity to get some some phenomenal meat selections without having to go to Alameda. I have enjoyed chatting with the staff there and found them tremendously helpful. They will custom create sausage for you through a special order--there is a minimum order, I believe it's three pounds or maybe five pounds. They often have trout, game hens, duck and calamari as well as organic chicken. Their chorizo is simply the best I've ever had. Certainly a hidden gem.

maybe i'm favoring this place because my brother manages it, but i think not. i travel to this place for the best sandwiches on earth. try the brian allan or the classic! always homemade soups, and freshly marinated meats to take home and cook on your own. best ever rotisserie chickens without the MSG. everything is natural and made with love. ask for mikey, and he will tell you how to prepare your meat and fish at home. he knows what he is talking about!

I was impressed with the meat, but disappointed with the seafood. I called a few times to inquire about crab the day before Christmas, and received conflicting reports from different employees. I was first told that the season was closed, then that there was too much "demonic acid" in the crab. (I think they meant demoic acid). Finally they said that no one in the Bay Area would have crab for Christmas, but that turned out to be a lie too. I went to JP Seafood on Central Ave. later that day and was able to pick up what ended up being delicious fresh crab for Christmas. Their display case also leaves much to be desired. I'll probably be back for their meat selection, but I'd suggest going elsewhere for seafood.
