Disgustingly, I discovered steel strands from a steel sponge entangled in my food.

My family and I recently ordered takeout from Baby Cafe, and to put it simply, the food exceeded all my expectations. I've been to the Baby Cafe location at the Emeryville Public Market before, but the Union City spot is on another level. For our group of four, we ordered the dry beef chow fun, Hainan chicken, and baked pork chop rice. Every dish was spectacular--easily some of the best I've had in the Bay.The Hainan chicken was incredibly tender, with not a single dry piece in the entire dish. It was so flavorful on its own that it didn't even need the ginger scallion sauce (though the sauce was great too). It's clear the chicken was carefully prepared because there was not a single bone shards to be found. The beef chow fun stood out with its unmistakable "wok hei" flavor -- that smoky, slightly charred essence that comes from being cooked over high heat in a wok.As for the baked pork chop rice, the sauce was nicely balanced--not too sweet, not too sour. We also got an great cut of pork chop, with just the right amount of fat and no tough tendons. If you're craving Hong Kong classics, Baby Cafe in Union City is a must-try.

Modern Cantonese Cafe with a Hong Kong Cafe sway. And in my area where I lost many of my Cantonese faves/staples because restaurants don't stick around as long as they once did, this one fills a very timely void. I haven't tried any of the HK specialties (yet), but given how I'm confident in this kitchen, I totally wouldn't mind trying. Even though I find the Italian fusion in Chinese culture to be quite strange/amusing. I have tried their warm Milk Tea ($6) and it is legit. Just basic strong black tea that is smooth and made even smoother with some condensed milk. I never find a warm milk tea this solid from any boba shop.Beef Stew Noodle Soup ($13/4*) Broth pretty good, not too dark but still still heavy with beef viscosity. Tons of thin egg noodles, almost too much. Very tangled and clumped so you have to do a lot of fluffing and separating of noodles. The noodles also had a weird aroma to it, I couldn't put my finger on it, and was my only big knock on this bowl. The beef was ALL connective tissue like zero muscle meat. The good is when simmered properly all that connective tissue becomes very tender albeit gelatinous, just like tendons. I don't think an average American will really order this, but Asians like this type of texture for stewed meats. I did for sure.Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice ($17/5*) I think this has become one of my favorite fried rice preps. I'm not sure what the 'salted fish' is really, but it is an umami bomb. I like many things fermented like shrimp paste, black bean paste and kim chi and this has a real similar effect. Too strong for American palates as I brought this into work one time and a couple of Americanized palates stayed away from this. Lol. But the rice is perfectly fried with a coating of oil onto each grain and little chicken pieces are all juicy and flavorful. XO Chow Fun with Pork Cheek Meat ($16/5*) Loved the noods, totally wok'd hard for that wok hei flavor and their sauce totally absorbs. I think I like thicker chow fun noodles as this was a bit thinner, but at least they don't make it mushy. And I've never seen pork cheek meat for this dish and it was legit, nice and chewy with a good bounce. Pork jowel meat is now one of favorite cuts of pork.Beef with Bittermelon ($18/5*) This has become one of my favorite Cantonese beef stir-fry dishes. Again not suited for Americanized palates as even the owner/server warned me about the bittermelon. Lol. But the beef was perfectly velveted, big chunks of bittermelon and green bell pepper added great vegetative texture and flavor and all tied together with a balanced black bean sauce. This will be an anchor dish for me here. Bay Fung Tong Fried Rice ($16/4*) I had to ask what exactly this was as I don't really see it on other menus. It definitely is a fried rice prep that I've never really had before, and I liked it. First off there is a definite curry flavor that is really noticeable in the first few bites. But after about the 5th bite or so I totally couldn't sense it anymore, like my senses got used to it. The protein chunks were pork nicely marinated in soy and rice wine so it had this unique flavor to it. And tiny chunks of spam, which didn't excite me at first but between the marinated pork and the spam, they both took turns at diversifying the hits. And there were the perfect amount of thinly sliced jalapenos to give this a great zing. A little oilier than the salted fish fried rice, but I would definitely get this again. I came twice, once during a weekend lunch and another time on a weeknight dinner and the food comes out way faster on the weekend trip. But both times the food came out super nice with some skill. To that, even though they've been around for several years, they're gonna be incorporated into my local rotation. I love symbiotic relationships.

This spot definitely exceeded my expectations and i am not mad about it. Came here after an afternoon stroll ended up ordering so much food lol their menu has so many different items to choose from and it's nice cause they all have pictures. Price point is fair, they give large shareable portions so we definitely ended up taking some home but there wasn't a single thing that disappointed me. Mapo tofu and the eggplant are definitely two items I would make the trip back just to have again. Service was super quick I was surprised and how fast the food came out cause the dishes were HOT. Layout of the restaurant itself is very cute, well lit and nicely decorated with lots of space so you don't feel crammed together.

Food came out quick. Well taken cared of. Ordered two dishes. Beef stew with noodles: the broth was flavorful and meat was tender. Baked pork chop with noodles: the sauce was a sweet tomato sauce topped with a fried egg. There was plenty noodles, but I thought the pork chop was mid-tender. Still giving it 5 stars because I still enjoyed my food.

Love their salty fish and chicken stir friend rice . It has the right amount salty fish to the fried rice so it is not too salty but rich flavors. I ordered half of a Hoi Nam chicken for $22 . It would be a better deal to get whole chicken for $30 . Meat is tender and it was cooked to just right . Very hard to get a good Hoi Nam chicken nowadays . Either the breast is over cooked or the chicken is not fresh . Happy with both items and there are many more dishes on the menu to try for next time !

I went to their newest location for a party of 4 and was seated right away by friendly staff. The interior was decorated pretty natural and modern. Portions were moderate and for a party of 4 it was perfect to share all the dishes we got! I think the menu has a great variety of dishes and for the prices it is worth visiting for sure.

Food still very good. Great price and inside has been renovated. The only thing that would make the overall restaurant better is the bathroom. The lights are really dim. So watch your steps. The new large size booths are very comfortable. We like their hai nan chicken, sizzling plate, red bean drink. Overall prices to portion size is at a great value.

We ordered their baked rice and baked spaghetti. Both tasted great and flavorful. They didn't take too long to serve the food, although they were busy. I recommended this place for their baked plate.
