I've ordered takeout from Matsuyama several times on Doordash. They've seemed to have good quality food at a decent price (I'd be worried about cheap sushi, like is it cheap for a reason?)I've ordered different rolls in the pace and I've ordered their Chirashi (assorted raw fish over sushi rice) or their Sake Don (salmon sashmi over sushi rice), and with both the rolls and their raw fish I've noticed the materials were fresh and good sized portions.I've only ordered on Doordash so I can't comment on the ambiance and stuff like that, but in the few times I've ordered it seems like the order was ready and the driver always dropped it off within the estimated delivery window.Matsuyama has become in my Doordash/takeout rotation.

I had some DoorDash credit and usually order from the same spots. I decided to try something different and this place was offering a bogo deal for hand rolls so I tried the California hand roll and the geisha roll. With the deal and my credit, it was more than reasonably priced otherwise it's fairly expensive for a ghost kitchen.The location is near Emeryville/Oakland and although there's street parking, everyone was double parked due to DoorDash orders. There's no seats inside so it's pretty crowded. I checked in and when I received a message that it was ready, it took another 15 minutes for it to come out. Food itself was okay and a bit pricey without any discounts or option to dine in. As a takeout only spot, I'd come back again if there was a deal. Otherwise, I'd rather support a local sushi spot or my go to favorite :) the price point is about the same but you get the experience and the timing is more accurate.

I've ordered delivery from Matsuyama a couple of times since they're a ghost kitchen/to go only stall and found the food to be inconsistent. The first time I was super impressed, especially after salivating over the photos of the chirashi bowl that others posted. But it looks like Matsuyama's cut back on the fish since they first opened because my chirashi did not look like the ones they posted in May 2022. There's notably less fish and less variety, which was a let-down since I was expecting what I saw in their own advertised photo.The biggest culprit for my review was the sushi rice. The first time I ordered here, no problem. Delicious, fluffy white rice seasoned with a balanced mix of sweet and sour vinegar. The next two times, I had bits of hard, undercooked rice grains scattered throughout my bowl that turned every bite into an unpleasant game of "will I bite into a rock this time" that really ruined the meal. The rice was also over-seasoned these times and quickly overwhelmed the fish, which, by the way, was also inconsistent. Sometimes the fish was buttery smooth and decadent as expected and sometimes the fish fell apart in a bad way, as if it had been frozen and defrosted too quickly.As much as I support the concept of Matsuyama, a delivery and take-out only kitchen in North Oakland's new-ish food hall, I'm tired of gambling on whether the food I'm going to get will be like that first time (delicious, would get again) or like the subsequent two times (crunchy rice, grainy fish).

Bummed they are temporarily closed, but info here on Yelp shows they are "open until 9pm" today. Best of luck and hope the restaurant is able to open back up. Note, this is a warehouse kitchen type setup where you can order on a screen and pick up. Setup for Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc.

Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant is serving up great sushi from it's ghost kitchen at the Longfellow Food Hall in North Oakland. It just does an amazing job in food quality and presentation. Of course, it's not the same as enjoying it in an actual restaurant. But it's hard to tell if this came from a real restaurant or a ghost kitchen. On a Saturday, I ordered the "Matsuyama Special" and the "Geisha Roll."The Geisha Roll consists of: Crab salad, shrimp tempura avocado, tuna, salmon, unagi sauce, spicy mayo, green onion, and masago. The fish was so fresh it just melts in your mouth. It was beautifully made. Price: $11.95Matsuyama Special consists of: Spicy tuna, spicy crab, shrimp tempura, chopped peppered tuna, chopped grilled eel, Korean chili paste aioli and miso bake sauce, green onion, masago, tempura flakes, unagi sauce, and garlic ponzu. This roll had beautiful vivid colors. It was spicy and peppery. It's delicious flavors stood out. Price: $13.95Included in the order were chopsticks, napkins, ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce. BTW, that wasabi pretty much cleared my nose.

Ordered of of door dash, was a bit hesitant since they are ghost kitchen. First orders were sooooooooo freaking good. Got the 5 piece seared tuna and also the fish lovers roll. Another time the same tuna with a hawai roll. I became a loyal customer. Unfortunately the quality of the seared tuna has gone down, you can feel the Lower grade tuna #3. Less fat/buttery meat and darker in color. Some chewy parts that really put a frown on my face. I ordered this another time to make sure perhaps just not a bad batch. Unfortunately, not a batch problem, just drop in quality. The rolls are fine and have a different tuna grade. I don't think I will be ordering seared tuna (which I love) for a while until they get it together. Also avocado on the rolls was old. (Blk colors)

I'm typically not adventurous. I'm not a risk taker, especially when it comes to limited yelp reviews and new places. But, my parents and I were hungry, and time was ticking because we needed lunch before an upcoming appt. After reading reviews from another sushi place where there was food poisoning, I had my hesitations with sushi in general. But after much consultation w my dad, he said, how bad could it be especially since they were offering a bogo thru ubereats...so if anything, it wouldn't be much of a risk. Boy am I glad for the sense of reasoning from my dad on this one! After all, the roll I was interested in was also baked, so it seemed "safe."We don't at all regret getting the baked dragon roll! It was absolutely delicious and fabulous! Everything was warm and very fresh from the crispiness of the shrimp tempura, to the fresh avocado (though I wish there was more avocado), to the tempura flakes on top! It was the perfect blend/combination of tasty ingredients and sauces, and it reminded me of a lion king roll with unagi instead of salmon. We liked the rolls so much that we considered getting another or something else, but we were already a bit full! But we actually ended up loving the rolls so much we came back for round two the very next day and it was just as delicious! Everything was also packed well. Even the chopsticks, wasabi and ginger had their own fancy separate to go compartment! Note, this is a ghost kitchen, with neighborhood parking. It shares the facility with many other restaurants and you never get to meet the owners. But it also gives you the opportunity to try other things from the same location if others in your group want something other than sushi. FYI I like this ghost kitchen better than the one at the oakland food hall...appears to be more organized, the ladies there were also very helpful and friendly.

That may have been the best unagi nigiri I've had. Highly recommend their baked dragon roll. Crunchy but still very tender...maybe it's from the crab salad. The sauce over this roll is amazing. Will be back to try more.

Ordered food for the family tonight at 646pm. It was supposed to be ready at 735pm. 845pm I'm told that my order is still not ready and won't be ready due to the amount of back up.Its 9pm now, I have no sushi, hungry kids, and no plan. Thanks Matsuyama.
