Date: 6/19/2016 Time: 12:50 PM 83° SunnyI could not do a check-in on Kenny's Heart 'n Soul Soul Food truck here at the Island Jam on Webster Street near Central Avenue. I am too far from their actual location of 45th & International Blvd. in Oakland.I have known about Kenny's Heart 'n Soul food truck for about two years when he was at a food truck venue near the Pleasant Hill BART Station. I could never be at a location to sample his ware. Then I don't venture out too much and/or too far for some social activities. I thought I was going to have one of those lazy dog day afternoon of doing nothing but hang in my crib before the Warriors game start. No such luck; husband wanted to get out and hang at the Island Jam, which is about 3-4 blocks from my crib.I guess it's a good thing to be out and finally getting food from Kenny's for lunch. Eats: two orders of 5-piece fried chicken wingettes, two sides of greens with smoked turkey, mac 'n cheese and two cornbread for my husband and me. Total price: $40.Wow! I did not know what to expect. Ten pieces of wingettes! They were not small pieces. There were no wing tips, but drummettes and wings fried to a nice golden brown, crispy exterior, moist and tender on the inside. Definitely it was on point...such delectable morsels! The aroma of the greens with pieces of smoked turkey beckoned me to order it. I certainly couldn't go without the mac 'n cheese and cornbread. The cornbread was coarse in texture, but having it with the greens made it better. A soul food meal wouldn't be complete without those side items. Food tasted so good - make me wanna holla, slap the cook and his mama for shakin' the pot/kettle. If I were not type 2 diabetic, I would be asking for some sweet tater pie or some homemade peach cobbler topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The portions were generous - enough to feed three people. Kenny's took care and hooked me up with so much food. My eyes got as big as saucers and I got me some leftover dinner tonight. Thanks, Kenny's, you did right by me. My stomach is full and I am very content. Enough said.

I love me some Kenny, he is just so personable and has the funniest personality. I would usually go to his truck when he comes to OTG Fremont just for the peach cobbler since it's the best! This time around I made a special trip (in the rain) to Alameda to finally try the food and let me tell you I tore that food up in the car before I made it back home lol.I'm really picky when it comes to soul food because many places don't get the dishes right but I went out on a limb because I just knew that Kenny was throwing down in the kitchen. I ordered the Fried Chicken Wingettes with Macaroni and Cheese as well as a peach cobbler. The chicken took some time since they are fried to order, chicken hot and fresh out the fryer is always best. The fried chicken wingettes were amazing, seasoned and cooked to perfection. They weren't oily at all and they were very juicy, almost reminded me of the fried chicken my mom makes. The macaroni and cheese was really tasty as well, it was really cheesy and there has to be a secret ingredient because it had another flavor that I can't put my finger on. Although the mac n cheese was good it was on the oily side and had the container extra oily but other than that it was really good. I'm really anxious to try the bbq pork riblets and the greens since I hear they are really good as well. The prices are a little on the higher side but I don't mind it because the food is good and it's cooked to order (most dishes). I will most definitely be going out of my way for those bomb chicken wings again, my mouth is watering just thinking about them lol. If you're looking for good soul food on the go then this is your place!

Nice to see soul food join the food truck roster. Not as good as Hard Knox or Brenda's, but pretty solid for coming from a food truck while parked in a city where there aren't too many soul food options. Definitely a treat compared to having yet another Asian Fusion in Tacos/Burrito truck.5 Fried Chicken Wingettes: More like a mix of Wingettes & Drumettes. At first I was thinking 5 half-wings is kinda small, but actually that's like a 2.5 piece chicken meal so it's filling enough (if you're not ravenous). Most of the wings were crispy. A moderately thick breading; thicker than buffalo wings, but thinner than Popeye's. Tasty enough.Mac & Cheese: Very cheesy. The macaroni was a bit too limp for my tastes. Wished there was some semi-burnt crispy cheese on top. But still rich and tasty in its own way.Red Kool Aid: No pretense. Just a large cup of Red Kool Aid for $2. Seems pricey for Kool Aid, but probably better to do this once in a blue moon than buy a whole canister of Kool Aid and drink that diabeetus-flavored beverage all month long. Paired very well with the meal.

I love this food truck!! Once a week Kenny's food truck is on Cal State East Bay's campus and I get their food whenever I get the chance. I usually get the fried chicken sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and I absolutely love it. It's about $13 for the two items and I think that's a good price especially for food trucks. The sandwich is huge and the mac and cheese is a good portion as well. The sandwich is fried chicken, coleslaw, and a drizzle of BBQ sauce on a delicious and fresh roll. I always eat as much as I can and I always have left overs. I haven't tried anything else from there because I always stick to what I know but I'm sure it's all delicious as well. Also the staff is definitely super friendly. I just love Kenny's!Enjoy!Simona

Cute little truck with big personality and a surprisingly generous sized vegetarian menu. I dig. I got to try Kenny's Heart & Soul after a visit to the Alameda Antiques Faire and a quick jaunt over to Faction Brewing Company next door for some beer and a stationary restroom. The line had about 4 people in front of me and lots more waiting for there food, which at that time was running about 15-20 minutes out per order. Seems lone but that's only a few minutes than it takes to wait in line for a beer at Faction so it actually works out perfectly. My friend got the fried chicken sandwich and I got the the bbq tofu sandwich, fries, potato salad, mac & cheese, and the peach cobbler. What? I was hungry. Together we ended up finishing everything less a few bites of the cobbler, which contained surprisingly few peaches. The BBQ tofu sandwich was really well done, the fries hit the spot though I wished they had pump ketchup or bottles instead of those little annoying packets. Potato salad was solid and the mac and cheese was good, too, albeit a little oily and pooling at the bottom the the paper tray. Our order for 2 people and generous amounts of food and no drinks with tip was around $55ish and pretty reasonable for how large the portions are.

OMG, cannot say enough about this food truck! The gentlemen that took my order was so funny and personable! I have never had so much fun ordering my lunch! I only wish I would have asked his name, so I could personally give him a shout out!I had the fried chicken sandwich with collard greens and corn bread and loved it! I used to live in the south and one of my favorite things about it was the food. Kenny's was so reminiscent of those days! The portions were huge and flavors were spot on! The cornbread was so amazing I could have eaten a whole pan of it! Collard greens were a tad bit salty for me, but overall excellent! And the chicken sandwich was so juicy, tender and had a great coating. Can't wait to eat at this food truck again!

My review is only for the mac n cheese.... maybe I'll have to come back and try the other food. This establishment is highly rated on yelp and I love mac n cheese. The workers seemed really nice and friendly stars for that.at $4 a serving you get a decent amount for "truck prices"They were fast and my coworker and I each got a box.I guess if you like pepper then you might like the mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was plastered with pepper, unfortunately that is all you can taste. A bit of tabasco or some sort of hot sauce might've given this mac n cheese more flavor. I know mac n cheese is heavy in general, but this one felt extra heavy and the paper box was drench in it's oil by the time I made back to my office. I will not be purchasing the mac n cheese again.

Oh. My. Goodness. The sandwich I ate tonight at Off the Grid was incredible. My boyfriend and I split the Pulled Pork Mac Sandwich. It was $14 and HUGE! Totally something you can split with another person. The sandwich was on Dutch Crunch loaded with pulled pork, mac and cheese, pickles, and coleslaw. It was tangy, bright, and filling!

Updated May 2018. Really mediocre. Or even below mediocre. I got their food twice from the food truck. The fried chicken wings were acceptable but nothing to rave about. The pulled pork sandwich was what made me decide to go write a review. Overly saucy pork tasted disgusting. Too much sweet sauce then they put extra sauce over it. Maybe they aren't confident with their quality of meat so they put this much sauce? Come on brother. Be a little more purist. I bet the one sandwich has like five sticks of sugar in it. Collard green was just OK too.
