Small mom and pop type Japanese restaurant specializing in katsu (and sushi) that's tucked away in Downtown Danville. I grew up in this area and party of me was just excited and happy to see places like this even exist in this part of town (maybe there's more Asian folks and eateries in the area now, but when I was in the area as a kid, these spots felt really rare). The service was great and folks here are very friendly. It's reminiscent of places I love to eat at in the relatively highly Japanese populated areas of Gardena/ Torrance in southern California. Came here with some family to get some dinner. The place isn't large, but a large group was leaving as we came in, so we were able to get seated pretty quickly. It was really cold that night so I ordered the hot soba noodles for myself. We also ordered some bottles of sake to be split among the adults of the table. I really enjoyed the soba. The texture of the noodles felt perfect and all the components and broth were tasty. I got a small bite of the tonkatsu from my nephew and that was really delicious and crispy as well. The food, the hospitality, the location, the people, and the space itself...just so much to like and love about this place.

Delicious katsu, reminding me of Japan! The katsu was on point though! Nice and crispy, and fluffy! Generous with the cabbage. And the set came with your choice of udon, curry, or soba. At $34, it is on the pricier side. But it is a decent sized portion! Overall it does seem pricier than the Emeryville location which is a pick up only location in a food hall. Definitely comfort food, tucked away in a cozy alley with a warm fireplace. On the sushi side... the sashimi was $45 for 8 pieces, and $24 for 4 pieces which is a bit steep. The rolls seemed big though! We didn't try sushi or sashimi so we can't comment to it.Overall we will be back for the Katsu! The Emeryville location is one of my favorites, and this is a bonus for the seating component. The service was okay! Maybe not too warm when we asked a question, but the food did come out fast which was nice.

Perfect, perfect, perfect! I love a good tonkatsu, and this for sure hits the mark. Located inside the Taru sushi restaurant, tucked in a little pocket of a strip mall behind Starbucks, now combined with Jungdon Katsu; there are two types of tonkatsu -- Anshim (pork tenderloin -- GET THIS ONE), and deungshim (pork loin -- the kind you'll get at most tonkatsu spots). They've also got a number of other katsu-type offerings like chicken, cheese, ground pork, codfish, and shrimp, but I like sticking to ole reliable and getting the tonkatsu. The anshim tonkatsu is a perfect balance of soft tender slightly juicy pork, with a moderately thick panko breading. Pair this with their tonkatsu sauce, or even the lemon salt, and you'll love it. The only thing that it's missing (in my opinion) is a little bit of ground toasted sesame seeds.Service is quick and nice, they first seat you at one of their tables, with a listed QR code to order -- love that they support Apple Pay, it makes the ordering process so easy.

Is this place Jungdon Katsu or Taru Sushi? Confusing. It turns out it's both. And I don't think that's a good thing. Makes me wonder how disappointing the sushi must have been to start a side hustle. So one of the Korean co-owners of Taru Sushi had a ghost kitchen in Oakland for selling tonkatsu and decided to start serving it in person at Taru Sushi.Anyways... found this place hidden behind a Starbucks. Came at noon on a Saturday and made the first service. We thought yay, we didn't have to wait in line. The problem with this is that because it is a sushi joint that recently started moonlighting as a tonkatsu place, I don't think they have enough deep fryers. After using the annoying QR code menu system to order one pork tenderloin and one pork loin tonkatsu, I looked up and realized that everyone in the dining hall had all ordered at the same time... S.O.L.This meant we waited over 30 minutes to get the food. While we waited, I noticed that the staff was unprofessional. Look, if you have issues and grievances, don't air it out in the dining area where customers can hear. Do it off hours, behind closed doors, or in a back alley while smoking a cigarette. Also, someone that ordered after us ordered a combo and I guess there was some issue with the QR code ordering system (I detest QR code ordering BTW). So a server approached the table and explained they needed to choose curry or udon. And then she just said stiffly, "what do you want"? So rude. When we finally got our food, they came out on trays that were too big for the table. We ended up knocking over stuff onto the floor. Moreover, the food was just plopped down on our table with no explanation about what the sauces were and what to do. The sauces we found out included tonkatsu sauce, salad dressing, and a plate of wasabi and salt. The tonkatsu actually wasn't too bad, and the portions were large. My advice, don't get a combo unless you film mukbangs. It's a lot. Final bill with tax and tip came out to $60+. With inflation and being in Danville, not too bad. I dunno, IMHO the negatives outweigh the pros. The workers have no joy like Kamala and let me repeat that the QR code ordering system is annoying AF. And the food takes too damn long and the servers need to turn those frowns upside down. Maybe they should've stuck to being a ghost kitchen since ghosts don't need to smile. When we were done eating and leaving there was a long ass line outside. I thought to myself, easily an hour wait before eating... LOL I forgot to explain that tonkatsu is panko-crusted pork cutlets similar to schnitzel. True or not, I'm sticking to the story that someone told me that the Japanese tried schnitzel and were like F this we can make it better. And they did. The only thing the Japanese didn't make better were AVs with mosaic. But wait... this place is Korean-style Japanese. I was hoping for an uncensored experience but all I got was a BJ channel. BTW the owners totally copied the name of the restaurant from a tonkatsu place in Seoul that is called (wait for it...) Jungdon Katsu LOL.Therefore, this place is not quite Temu-level imposter. More like Alibaba. Itai!!!

Not sure if Jung don Katsu is part of Taru Sushi or has taken over the restaurant. The sushi menu and sushi bar is still intact. The interior has not changed neither has the signage. The new Katsu menu is a great add. We ordered two combo meals of Katsu one pork loin and one fish both of which are excellent freshly made. The tray comes with rice, shredded cabbage salad (traditional) potato salad and a small bowl of soba noodles. The Alaskan cod and pork Katsu were done just right 5 stars. We had the grilled garlic edemame appetizer which was just meh $9. Definitely not grilled. Stir Fried and kinda greasy. The food takes a long time to come out. Luckily we were the first one to order. Parking is hard with only street parking available. Service was ok.

Walked in to be seated for an early weekend dinner. See menu and order via QR code only but easy enough. We both had the full on katsu meal which included hot udon noodles, shredded cabbage, a literal mound of pork katsu, corn & potato salad, and homemade sauces. The udon noodles were chewy and tender with the broth flavorful and not salty, cut pieces of fried tofu floated within. The cabbage came with a side of tasty, semi sweet sauce to pour over. The pork katsu was perfectly panko breaded and fried to a light not at all oily goodness. Even the potato salad was delicious! We also shared a big ol pot of green tea which hit the spot! Friendly helpful service. Cozy small intimate restaurant in a funky alley location but WORTH the visit!!! We'll be back!

The katsu here is phenomenal. Easily the best katsu I've had in the Bay. Husband ordered the anshim katsu set (pork tenderloin) and it came with rice, cabbage, udon, and corn salad. It's a big portion so come hungry if you plan on ordering a set! He really enjoyed it. I ordered the fish katsu (cod) and holy cow, it was amazing. It came with rice, cabbage, and tartar sauce on the side.We also ordered the shrimp katsu a la carte on the side and that came with 3 pieces. The breading on all the katsu was very light and crunchy. Not oily and not mushy or soggy. It's been a week since trying this place and I've been thinking about it all week. Will definitely be back!

We have eaten at Jungdon more than five times. Each visit, the sushi and the katsu were perfect--the most delicious we've ever had! Never had katsu so light and crispy. The chicken and fish are a definite "must try." The added bonus: The people who work there are always so friendly and helpful. We will be back soon, next time with family and friends. This is a little hidden gem in Danville.
