You wake up on Christmas morning in a town you just moved to. You have no friends, no family in the area. Maybe you have no friends or family anywhere. You feel like a castoff, a dreg of society. Still, you've maintained a moral structure that won't allow you to eat at a place staffed with people who would rather be celebrating Christmas. Their greedy atheistic employers have forced them to work, but you will not contribute to the injustice. Naturally, you bring your morals, and your appetite, to Chinatown. Your first choice, probably Ming's, has a line spilling out the door. Maybe you wait it out with an ironclad will for a dim sum feast. Maybe you don't. Maybe you go a block up for hand pulled noodles at Shandong. You see they're closed. Walk around and stumble into Hay Yue: a scruffy dining room where you can order from a menu of Cantonese grandeur. It's Christmas day after all, get some chicken feet in black bean sauce; chitterlings with something called sauerkraut, but is actually cabbage cooked in a gastrique; a rice claypot with frog's legs (remember to drizzle soy sauce and chili oil around the perimeter immediately upon its arrival - it will sizzle and signal a brilliant crust upcoming); congee with cilantro and whitefish. Merry Chinese Christmas.

We've only been to Hay Yue for breakfast and order to go during breakfast time so this review mainly covers that area. For a few times we have tried their wonton and beef stew fun and noodles variant. The breakfast comes with Hong Kong Milk tea or coffee, hot or iced. If you order 2 breakfast with $3 you can get the pork cheong fun or pay a little bit more for the dim sum black bean sauce chicken feet. Their fun are very high quality, it is the same high quality of chicken pho and their egg noodles is decent quality. We've also tried the curry flavored beef stew. Their milk tea is okay, nothing special. They do charge extra for containers if you order to go, which is typical practice of Chinatown. One thing I do want to mention is their dim sum items are very good. Steamed black bean chicken feet and their shiu mai are very good and tasty. We do plan on going back for their dinner hours to try other items. I do recommend this place with a 4 stars ratings!

Back at it... Trying to discover a restaurant that will not disappoint offering flavor, customer service and affordable prices.Hay Yue Restaurant is located in Chinatown Oakland. This place is all about Chinese comfort food. The restaurant has a feel of a Mom's and Dad's, don't let that fool you. It can get noisy at times but it's not tremendously bad. I personally didn't mind it. I was greeted with a cup of artichoke soup which was surprisingly good. Then the rice and dishes. Great flavor! The tofu really stands out! The sponginess and mix of salt and sweetness just kept me wanting more! I loved the flavor and seasoning! I definitely loved their customer service, the menu is in Chinese I had to get help from the waiter translating the dishes names to English. I thought that was cool! I definitely recommend Hay Yue restaurant! And I'd love to revisit and enjoy more of the dishes this place has to offer.

Date: 10/25/2024 Time: 12:30 PM 70° SunnyI received a telephone call from my younger sister, inviting me to join her and my oldest sister for lunch at this restaurant. I have never dined here and it is my first time. After perusing the chow fun menu, we decided on having beef chow fun, Satay chicken chow fun and Singapore curry rice noodles. Service was prompt. We didn't wait long for lunch. Then the restaurant was not busy. The ambiance is a well lit restaurant with two flatscreen TV's mounted on the walls. Other decor included plants and bamboo in red planter.Beef Chow Fun: The aroma of this dish was pleasing. It was okay, but oily and greasy. (3 stars)Satay Chicken Chow Fun: Nice presentation of sliced chicken, green and red bell peppers and pineapple atop the chow fun. It was delicious, despite the chow fun being in clumps. (3.5 stars)Singapore Curry Rice Noodles: I haven't had this dish in I don't know how many years. It's one of my favorites. Rice noodles with curry and loaded with shrimp, slivered chicken and char siu. Delicious and quite enjoyable (4 stars).Fresh Chinese broccoli was excellent, sautéed to perfection, not overcooked and crunchy texture. (4 stars)The portions were generous for all three noodles dishes. I would like to return in the future to view their dim sum menu.Overall rating (3.5 stars rating rounded up to a 4 stars rating).

There's a new spot in Oakland Chinatown!I saw this pop up on Yelp when I was browsing for restaurants and decided to try it out with a friend. We came for lunch on Tuesday around 12:45, and most of the tables were occupied by locals. Always a good sign. The space and bright and airy and tables didn't feel crammed together. We snagged the last available booth. They have a large menu of food options, ranging from meat and seafood dishes to rice/noodle dishes. We ordered two dishes to share:Chicken pot rice ($14.98) - this was good, but I felt like there was way too much rice and not enough chicken/veggiesFish fillet in black bean sauce ($16.98) - this dish is one of my go to's at a Cantonese spot and it's beautifully executed here. The fish was tender and flavorfulThey also gave us complimentary soup. The soup was kinda bland but I appreciated the gesture.Based on the sign outside, I think they have a lunch special where you can get 3 dishes + 1 soup for 40 bucks. I'd love to came back and try that some time.

Clean dinning area. Vast menu. Friendly service. Yummy clay pot dish. There is a "Clay Pot" section and a separate "Pot Rice" section in their menu. Silly me - I wanted clay pot rice but mistakenly ordered a Clay Pot ( which doesn't come with sizzling rice in the pot ). Food was still good. Need another visit for clay pot rice.

I'm glad another restaurant took over this spot. They have a special where you can order 3 dishes for $40. It comes with a house soup, today they had dried vegetable soup with almonds. I really missed restaurants that give out house soup. We ordered the salt and pepper pork chop, combination tofu clay pot and Chinese broccoli with fish cake. The ladies working inside were efficient and kind. The place was packed for lunch. Food came out quick. Everything was a little on the salty side for me. Pork chop was crispy and full of meat, the tofu clay pot was good too. The Chinese broccoli and fish cake was only okay, will skip that next time and try something else.

I recently noticed that this place has a grand opening sign so during lunch time I decided to check it out. The interior of the restaurant lacks any decoration and a little boring to look at. The restaurant has typical booth settings that can seat parties of 4 and bigger tables to seat bigger parties. The service is quick and efficient, I didn't have to wait long to order or get my food. I ended up ordering the club sandwich and hong kong milk tea. The sandwich and fries were a bit too cold for my liking so that's my first complaint. Other than that it was also pretty dry, if I didn't have ketchup I don't think I would have been able to finish it. However the sandwich itself was pretty decent. I wouldn't order it again though. The hong kong milk tea however was delicious! This is one of my favorite drinks so I was very happy that this place nailed it. The drink is strong and sweet just like how I like it. I might come back with friends but maybe not alone? It might be a better idea to order multiple dishes and share with friends to get a better idea of this restaurant.

Been over 1 year last eaten in Oakland Chinatown. Some of my fav restaurants r closed, thankfully this new place stepped up: great food, good prices, clean dining room, bathroom reasonably clean. Claypot rice (preserved meat) was excellent, rice soaked up the juice & flavor or the fatty preserved meat, bottom had a thin burnt layer, wish there was more.Beef brisket stew ho fun soup was good: tasty broth yet light & non greasy, brisket tender.$29.72 include tax for 2 items, good value & only found in Chinatown. I just had a bowl of ramen in SF for nearly $22 excluding tips.
