Ive ordered from Gims many times; mainly when i was in high school for lunch but that was almost 20 years ago at this point. But tonight, I ordered their chicken won ton soup for my wife. After our baby's bath, we fed her the soup with jasmine rice added to it and it's baby-approved. I even I snuck bites here and there while she was chewing and it was so warming and delicious, esp when with the weather getting colder. Ill keep adding reviews the more things I try but in the recent years, I have not been disappointed yet.

This place is *impressively* bad...I logged onto Yelp for the first time in a dog's age just to warn people about Gim's. Hands-down the worst Chinese I've ever had - and I got food poisoning from chicken chow mein before! Ordered crab rangoon, spicy orange chicken with broccoli, and pork fried rice. Basic staples to gauge a place that I've never been to. Total cost before tip was FORTY DOLLARS!!! ($40!) Forty. Dollars. After the price gouging came the food, which for that kind of money had better be phenomenal. Or at least worthy of the next day's lunch and/or dinner. Here's what I got instead:Crab rangoon - Some sort of paste in a deep-fried spring roll. Crab flavor was not noticeable. Texture was absent. It was basically just a greasy, over-fried roll. Sweet & sour sauce accompaniment was of the generic store-bought variety.Spicy orange chicken with broccoli - Was neither spicy nor flavorful. Bland, tough chicken in soggy breading. The breading just *mushed* off the overcooked bits and bobs of what I hope was chicken. Absolutely horrendous. I ate the broccoli (only good part of the entire order; it was...broccoli) and threw the rest out.Pork fried rice - Until this moment, I believed that it was impossible to ruin PFR. Then Gim's said, hold my wok! Howwwww can you make PFC soggyyyy.... god it was awful. Bland mushy brownish rice with no vegetables or anything else besides giant chunks of pork and fat. The pork itself had good flavor. I just can't believe they ruined the rice! At first I was livid that I had just wasted $40 on some of the worst food I've ever tried to eat, but then - while I was on the toilet dealing with the aftermath (yes, this got explosive within an hour of eating) - I reasoned that $40 was a small price to pay for a life lesson. The moral of this story is to actually scout out the new neighborhood you just moved into for quality meals, rather than dip into the first place you see which locals have assured you is an "institution." Either they were messing with me (although I doubt it since they were IN the restaurant) or just have never eaten Chinese food anywhere else, ever. And maybe don't order food from a place that looks like it mainly sells trinkets to naive tourists on the wharf.

It was 9 PM and all the other Chinese restaurants were already closed that were closer to me. Kim was the only one that was close enough and open till 9:30 PM.It was easy enough to find parking as everything else was closed and the library parking is pretty close. The prices seem pretty reasonable so I was really curious what the quality was. I had a hankering for wonton soup. I ordered the barbecue pork wonton soup and added the beef with black beans sauce chow fun. They were ready in a record 10 minutes! As I drove home, I couldn't believe how great it smelled! At home, the large container of wonton soup was mostly broth, a different shape of wonton than I had seen before, and had no other items except a few slices of barbecued pork. I usually see some sort of bok choy or vegetable in the soup at other locations. It was tasty though because the wontons sat in the soup the whole way they were a bit soft and soggy. The black bean beef chow fun looked beautiful and smelled appetizing. It was delicious however I would recommend they coat the beef slices with cornstarch before frying to allow it to stay moist. The beef was a good grade, but because it wasn't coded when fried it was rather hard and chewy. So I just have two minor recommendations: 1) Add bok choy to the wonton soup, and 2) coat any meats with cornstarch before frying to retain the moist and tender textures. Bravo, for the ingenious way of packaging the to go order without the soup going through and smashing the container of the beef chow fun! Ingenious.

Spelt Gims - this place offers incredibly tasty food. There is usually a wait and that is because it is cooked to order which what you want. Flavors are amazing , textures are there, portions are big : one dish can easily be shared. From placing the order to collection allow usually 40 minutes. Parking is easy.

Gim's Chinese Kitchen has been in operation for about 70 years. It has no dining room, and is takeout or delivery only. I haven't been here in awhile, so I decided to drop by and order a few favorites and write a review. In general, the food is good.....but I found something you should be aware of.On a Sunday evening, I ordered in person.....- Wor Won Ton Soup- Hong Kong Chicken Chow Mein- Salt 'n Pepper Prawns, No Shell, 11 count in order(These are all premium menu items)Service, Grade (1/5): When you walk in the restaurant, there's no menu to pickup and read. There's an old faded menu taped to the wall that's hard to see. So she asked me what I want, and then she writes up the receipt. She charged me $44 for those 3 items. Yes, I was a little surprised, but not upset. In other Chinese restaurants, $40+ is about what you would pay for those 3 items. Entrees in other restaurants are much higher now. But Gim's is known for it's low prices. So if you walk in to order, they charge you whatever they want? Based on the prices on the Caviar App, it looks like they raised their prices by 50%. Okay, so how was that food I got overcharged for?Wor Won Ton Soup, Grade (3/5): It was okay, but not great. First, they fold the won tons into thirds, not into triangles. This made them doughy and chewy. The broth was bland. No biggie on ingredients. Don't order this.Hong Kong Chicken Chow Mein, Grade(4/5): The lady tried to talk me out of ordering this. Why? Hong Kong Style Chow Mein is harder to make. The crispy noodles must be freshly made. Some cooks refuse to make it because it requires two woks if done properly. But it was really good! Crispy noodles were fresh and lightly crisp. Plenty of tender chicken and veggies. The flavors were blended right. Salt 'N Pepper Prawns, No Shell, Grade (5/5): Okay, this is an expensive dish. There's 11 average sized prawns, lightly breaded, and seasoned. Dried red chili peppers added for heat. They were delicious! So, overall I have to say 2-stars. Even though the food is good, your lack of a proper menu is like you're trying to fool people into paying higher prices. Also, no utensils? No soy sauce? People eat with their hands? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Located on Lincoln Ave between the gas station and library.

The woman who owns it is very ill tempered to be working with the public it does not suit her. The food is a miss and not what it used to be. I have even reported her to the better business bureau because she cancels food pick up apps because she does not want to pay the fees and basically had written in price changes with menus only on the wall and then wanted to charge me more when she already charged my credit card. Everything had the same price at $12.99 at that time. No matter what you ordered she would complain everything cost so much! She made an enemy for life the way she treated me.

Had not ordered from Gim's in a while and wanted to give them a try, again. I ordered three items BBQ Pork Won Ton Soup, Chicken Chow Mein, and Spicy Pork & Eggplant. The Won Ton was super disappointing which is a nice way to say it was bad. The broth tasted overloaded with soy sauce (for flavor) and more salt. The Won Tons were embarassing. Why? A dot of meat inside the huge doughy won ton jacket. The pork and eggplant was the best dish. There wasn't much spiciness, but the eggplant was cooked well. The chow mein had no flavor and super oily. I don't recall having such unenjoyable food from Gim's. (2 out of 3 ain't good)
