Xcellent Soul Food is decent, but to be honest, it's more "OK" than excellent. The food is definitely made from scratch, which is a plus, but the flavors just didn't hit the mark for me. The collard greens and mac & cheese, for example, tasted a bit bland--like cafeteria food made by a lunch lady, rather than the rich, soulful flavors I expect from soul food. The ambiance at Xcellent Soul Food is quiet, with some background chatter, but it's the kind of place you could easily miss if not for the signage on the door. The "X" in the logo stands out, but beyond that, the location doesn't really grab attention. It's not that it's unrecognizable, but the restaurant hasn't quite built a reputation for itself yet. Most people who end up here probably discovered it through Uber Eats, where they offer some good deals. Aside from that, there's not much that really sets this place apart. The mac & cheese, in particular, was a thick, cheesy glob that didn't have much depth to it.As for the chicken, I tried both honey chicken wings and turkey wings. The portions were generous, but the meat was a bit sparse, so I ended up with long, skinny pieces of chicken. When I lived near Ralph Avenue, this spot was convenient for takeout, especially if you're in the area and need something quick. It's not usually busy, and it's easy to grab if you're walking past the Popeyes and McDonald's near the A train. However, I'd recommend ordering delivery through Uber Eats, especially since you can sometimes score deals, like a two-for-one offer, which makes the price tag feel more worth it.If you're walking up to this place expecting great soul food, you might be disappointed. Honestly, I'd recommend going to Popeyes instead for a better value. The food here is just average. The staff is friendly, though, and the place is convenient, but when it comes to soul food, it's not quite what I was hoping for.
