Solid casual Japanese spot! The pork katsu don is flavorful and the pork is decently tender. The chicken karage appetizer is pretty good too but I wish it came with a sauce.I've gotten their soba noodles before too which are good, but disappointed that they don't do a tempura appetizer only as add ons.Usually quick seating and easy to walk in. Would recommend

Quick service and noodles have a nice bite that you don't always find in soba! I got the cold chirashi. The tempura was on the smaller side, slightly greasy which made the broth oily. The other toppings were also on the sweet side. A surprisingly spacious restaurant with plenty of not fight seating. We were able to walk in as a group of 6 and get seated right away (though it was a weeknight)

It's been 16 years since my last review! Stopped by for a weekday lunch and overall was a bit disappointed. I'm surprised it got a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand award. (+) No wait for a seat at the bar(-) There was a fly buzzing around for my entire meal(-) I got the Sobaya Bento Set (Monday Special Offer) with hot soba. The soba and the broth just weren't good. I thought the soba was a little overcooked and the broth was basic. The bento box's contents, quality, and taste were very ordinary - didn't taste like a special. This has a limited quantity and I didn't come at opening, so it should've been a red flag when this hadn't sold out. (-) I got the matcha warabimochi and it was thicker than the others I've had. It also wasn't nicely plated.

Hmm, for a restaurant with a michelin recommendation, this was pretty disappointing. The service is really nice, but the food was overpriced and honestly not that good. The agedashi tofu wasn't soft, and when it arrived it wasn't that hot. The soba was fine, but nothing special. I was looking forward to the tempura, but it was not good. The shrimp was overcooked and the breading was too much, so it was soggy and oily. There are better places to get soba or udon.

Food: The freshly made soba and udon noodles were delicious and perfectly cooked. The balance of flavors in both dishes was impressive.Cost: The prices were reasonable, especially considering the quality of the ingredients and the preparation.Environment: The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, with plenty of seating. However, the popularity of the place might lead to wait times.Service: The service was efficient and friendly. The food was served promptly.Uniqueness: Making their own noodles sets this restaurant apart. The freshness of the noodles was evident in the taste and texture. I would definitely be coming back if I'm in the area or craving good soba. I personally find the winter time to be the best time to go out and enjoy some soba and udon!

Heard they had one of the best sobas in manhattan so we decided to come here for lunch. We came right when they opened and we were promptly seated. We each ordered the mini lunch set. It came with a choice of donburi and either hot or cold soba or udon. I got the unagidon with hot soba. My bf got the tempura with cold soba. My bf is a big fan of soba and really liked it. The unagidon was great and the soba was light and helped balance out the meal. Great portions as well.

The Soba at Sobaya is amazing! If you're craving noodles, hot or cold, you can get them at Sobaya. Fun fact they're in the Michelin Guide! Super high quality food for a decent price. They also have a great lunch special that changes by the day and consists of soba and Don specials. The salmon Don was also super tasty and fresh. Not to mention, the inside of the restaurant is super cute and cozy! Service was also super nice and sat us at the perfect table!

We were craving something warm and cozy on a Fall night so we made a reservation at Soba-ya, which felt useless in the end. We still had to wait a good 15-30 minutes, and some larger parties that came after us in line were able to be seated, which led us to scratch our heads. When finally seated in a tucked away corner which was hard to get someone's attention, we finally ordered two Nabeyaki Udon Noodles-the menu has a spectrum of noodle orders that have bare bone ingredients, and this option was the opposite: ingredients overload. I wish they placed the shrimp tempura on a separate dish so it wouldn't have been mushy and a lot of the ingredients by itself were good, but all together they did not mesh well.Their lunch specials look better balanced and priced, so I'd probably stop by for that to give them a second chance!

Visited on a Friday night with a reservation for a party of 6 and we were seated promptly. Loved being able to watch fresh soba being prepared while we looked over the menu. The dishes were warm and comforting on this cold night. Would absolutely return to try their lunch sets.4/5 Nabeyaki Udon -- deeply umami broth with a good variety of toppings. Very thick style udon but for me personally I prefer a bit more chew to my udon.4/5 Chirashi Soba -- very thin style soba with good buckwheat flavor!3/5 Karaage - lightly fried, not particularly crisp, and lacked any seasoning and flavor. Would skip this one.
