My party and I went on a Saturday morning. We expected a wait, which was fine as we walked around Chinatown while waiting! The service was great- host was friendly and the servers walking around were to the point, which is expected at Asian restaurants. There are many dim sum places in Chinatown to try, and we were looking to not eat too much, so this place was a perfect pick! The place itself wasn't the cleanest, but I really don't know what one expects. The dim sum experience is my favorite :)

There was a huge crowd outside on a rainy day but I decided to go in and ask about the wait anyways, and we were seated right away (shrug). I think there might have just been people trying to stay out of the rain and the crowd scared people from the restaurant. We had the scallion pancakes, pork XLB, and chicken rice cake. I would say the XLB were not quite as good as Noodle Village but still better than the fancy DTF in midtown. You can't really ever go wrong with scallion pancakes and the chicken rice cake was delicious - great consistency and flavor. This is a solid spot for good, authentic Chinese food in Chinatown and definitely on my go-to list (Noodle Village and Joe's Shanghai are the other two).

I came here around 1:30pm so I was early enough for the lunch special. Lunch comes with tea, hot and sour soup, and white rice. I got the beef with peppers and onion as well as general tso chicken. The food came out quick and piping hot. They don't serve juice; only soda, wine, and beer.

Thankfully we didn't have to wait. I think tourist love this place mainly for its seating. Service is good but they're not bothering you, you will need to flag them down so don't get annoyed, it's just how it is. Food was tasty but nothing to go crazy about. Chinatown has so many good food options. This is a really good one but if you have to wait I'd walk away and try somewhere else. 4.5 out of 5.

Came in on a Sunday with a party of 2 at around 12:30pm, and had to wait about 20 minutes. There's a small area in the front where you can wait in, but if there are a lot of people you might have to wait outside.Service was fast and food came out quickly. The soup dumplings are perfect, super soupy on the inside and taste amazing. We tried the Crab Meat & Pork and the Steamed Pork Dumplings - both were delicious, and surprisingly we liked the classic Steamed Pork Dumplings more. Super simple and satisfying.Great place for a quick bite!

One of the best soup dumplings Ive had in nyc. The broth is flavorful and worth the wait! I recommend coming before opening if you want to avoid waiting. The restaurant is small and does not have as many tables. So limited capacity. When we arrived 30mins after opening, the place was already pretty packed. We to wait 20mins for a table. So husband and I walked around Mott street window shopping until then.Once we came back, we were seated after a few mins.Service is standard, food came out fast.I recommend the pork soup dumplings! And the pan fried dumplings

Shanghai 21 is a solid pick if you're in the mood for good Chinese food, though it's definitely a popular spot, so the small space can feel a bit crowded. Despite the bustling environment, the restaurant does a great job pacing the food. Each dish arrived at just the right time, so we never felt rushed or overwhelmed by too many plates at once. The dumplings were fine--nothing too memorable, but solid enough. The Sichuan-style wontons were a highlight, though; they were super flavorful and had a real kick of spice that made them stand out. The General Tso's chicken was another hit, coming out fresh, spicy, and perfectly cooked. We also tried the Shanghai-style lo mein with chicken, which was decent, though it could have used a bit more flavor to really make it pop. Still, overall, the food was satisfying, with some standout moments. If you're okay with a cozy, popular setting and are looking for well-spaced service with a few spicy highlights, Shanghai 21 is a good bet for a tasty meal in the city.

I now know why this spot is known to always have a line to get in. If you're looking for authentic and delicious Chinese food, this is the spot! We arrived just a little after they opened for lunch and got a table right away. The menu was extensive and loaded with so many great options. The servings are large enough for you to get a few different things to share. Service was good and friendly. Our food came out fairly quick. Loved the traditional decor, it was very welcoming, The food:Egg drop soup - just as expected, delicious.Dim Sum options were plentiful - shrimp dumplings were perfection.Lo Mein Rice Noodles and Shrimp - one of the best I've ever had! General Tso's Chicken - this was fire! Perfectly spicy. Everything we ate hit the spot, definitely a go to spot in Chinatown! Very inexpensive! You will day dream about this food, it's that good! They are well-known for their soup dumplings, something worth trying! This spot is popular! Arrive early or expect to wait in line. Once we finished our lunch and walked outside, there was a long line of people waiting to eat here. It's definitely worth it. Can't wait to eat here again!

We got here about 10min before they opened and there were 3 parties ahead of us. Service was prompt and friendly. The soup dumplings (XLB) here are SO good!! We ordered the usual pork ones and also the crab and pork ones and they were juicy and the skin was just the right thickness IMO. However the fried tiny buns could have been more crisp on the bottom. I had read that their wonton soup is a must but I disagree. It was bland and mediocre. I would go back just to have the XLBs! Restaurant was spacious and clean, with a clean bathroom!
