After randomly stumbling upon this place we made a reservation for 8:45 last night. We did our anniversary dinner here and I think it's the perfect date night spot. We were stuck in a lot of traffic and ended up being about 20 minutes late but it wasn't a big deal at all they still seated us immediately. The service overall was great and so friendly. We were Sat in the back area but if you can I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar it seemed like it would enhance the experience. We started off with a lychee and jalapeño martini, both were great. We got the spicy hand roll set and the west village hand roll set. I added the negi toro as well which is a must. Honestly we LOVED everything except I think you can skip the salmon avocado. It was a little too innovative for me and I prefer just the fresh fish and seaweed. We also added on the wagyu hand roll at the end and the sushi chef was so kind and gave it to us on him. All the food was great and everything working there was also amazing. I would throughly recommend especially as I think this place will soon be hard to snag a resy. I'll be back!

Moody Tongue recently opened its hand roll bar section of the restaurant, and my boyfriend and I were eager to try it and the martinis out. I did overall enjoy the hand rolls, and the service at the establishment was absolutely phenomenal. It's a great place for a swanky date night, too. What ultimately prevented a 5-star rating was the inconsistent flavor and quality.First off--the servers and chef at the hand roll bar were incredible. The service was attentive and caring, and the chef carefully explained every fish and roll to us. He also came over at the end to chat a little bit and even gave us a little Japanese sweet to end the night. If you have something to celebrate, the servers will make sure you feel seen and special. The fish was all fresh and tasty. My boyfriend and I both decided to go with the West Village roll combo and we each added on one more roll. We also ordered martinis to complement our meal. The spicy tuna roll was the standout of the night. If I just had three of those rolls, I would have left extremely happy. The orange madai rolls were also delicious, and I liked the salmon avocado though my boyfriend enjoyed it a little less. I enjoyed my tomato ricotta roll a lot (though it was pricey for what it was) and the negi toro roll wasn't the best I had but was still yummy. The lychee martini and negi oil Gibson martini were both great pairings to our sushi. Neither of us were a fan of the fluke or hamachi ponzu rolls. I thought the ume honey on the fluke had an odd aftertaste, and that the hamachi ponzu roll was a bit too wet with both thick slices of daikon and also cucumber. The seaweed was also a bit too thick on all of the handrolls, generally, making it hard to bite through sometimes. I enjoyed my tomato martini at first, but sadly the more I drank it the more of a weird sour aftertaste I had in my mouth. The server, however, was super kind and was able to get me something new. It's completely possible though that my palate just wasn't aligned with some of the more daring concepts of the menu, like the tomato martini or the hamachi ponzu.Overall, I think this is a fun new concept that I would recommend for a slightly more affordable version of Moody Tongue.

Made a reservation for a friend and I on Wednesday evening since we had a sushi craving. this place had a cute vibe and the servers were so kind which is always amazingwe knew we wanted the sashimi sampler, an app, and dessert. the sashimi sampler is such a great price. favorites were fatty tuna and the salmon - but all the fish were seriously so delicious. the salmon crudo was zesty and so good! def a nice little fish starterand last we did a panna cotta - this dessert was shockingly great. the matcha was made very well and was a good portion size - the little boba pieces were not a needed touch howeverdef recommend!!!!

The handroll space was cute and intimate. Service was great and everyone was super friendly. The martini selection was wide and drinks were very good - there were 2 of us and we each tried 2. All four were good. We both did the west village and then added one extra roll. Handrolls were fine but not a traditional handroll. Each one is handed to you and the hover emphasize the "top" rather than the roll itself. We had to ask for ginger and soy sauce. Fully appreciate that handrolls painted with sauce usually don't need soy sauce but some of these very much did....Something was off with the paper, not sure if from sitting out or what. Finally, the handrolls were served in a random order not as listed on the menu. Overall it was a good experience but if you are a die hard handroll connoisseur, you're probably not going to be WOWed.

Came to Moody Tongue on a Saturday night and had such a great dinner! We started with the spicy tuna and torched summer scallop maki's, and the fluke crudo. All were great but the spicy tuna was something special! For mains we both ordered our own specialty nigiri selection. While the fish was great, some of the pieces felt like they should have been on the traditional selection as they didn't offer up much flavor. My favorite was the tuna with a garlic confit! For dessert, they were out of the berry soft serve, so we ordered the s'more cookie and carrot cake. The carrot cake slice was huge and I would absolutely order that again! The s'more cookie, while tasty, could have been elevated by being warmed up.For beer, I ordered the pear saison and the berry cobbler cassis. The beer selection here was amazing and I can't wait to go back and try more!! My friend who went with me doesn't even like beer and she loved both of the ones I ordered.Service was also great! We never felt rushed even though we were there for over two hours through apps, mains, and dessert! Also, you must use their bathroom - the Toto toilet is such a luxurious touch!

My friend and I stopped by for happy hour right before dinner. I was eager to check it out because of their unique beer selection. Based on the menu, I think the sushi is a bit overpriced, but happy hour is always a good deal.I tried the Juiced Lychee IPA, which was really good--you can definitely taste the lychee in the aftertaste. My friend had the Raspberry Rose, but it was too tart for me. I also had the Sour Watermelon Saison, which was supposed to taste like a watermelon Jolly Rancher, but it didn't. However, the pickled watermelon rind flavor stood out. Of course, we had to try the caviar bump for $15, served on a wooden spoon. (Yep... wooden spoon IYKYK) We also ordered two happy hour hand rolls, the spicy scallop and spicy tuna, priced at $12 each. They were fresh and pretty good.Overall, I'd come back just for the happy hour.

Very inventive beer selection without compromising integrity. A lot of the beers have a fruit in their title or making which usually causes me to steer clear, but none I tried were gimickally fruity. The cherry lambic and lychee IPA were as exquisite and Je ne sais quoi as a fine glass of natural wine. Even the simple Pilsner was one of the best I've had. Not to mention the splendid array of beer-specific glassware! And to top it off you get to pair all of that with top notch sushi. The rolls are deliciously and delicately designed and the new flavors just compete with the wonderful texture of everything. I also enjoyed the surprising cucumber salad (not what you think) with chili crisp, the warm mushroom salad, the hamachi crudo, the tuna roll (best I've had), salmon roll, and scallop corn roll. Will be back to try the nigiri, but from afar it looked wonderfully presented. I got the berry Sunday for desert and after that I was a very happy camper. Bartender Juan was great and took his time to introduce me to the beer and food selection. His recommendations were excellent. Beautiful ambiance and calm even on a Friday night. Can't wait to return to try everything I didn't get to.

Fabulous experience. Can't say enough about it. Food and drink almost perfect. Couple of small nits (hamachi roll with bell pepper was a bit heavy, salad had a bit too much dressing) but small nits to pick in the grand scheme of what a great experience the rest of it was.

We were really looking forward to eating here and left quite disappointed. We've been trying all the different omakase places in the city which have been fantastic and this one was did not compare at all. Got the Brewmaster's tasting menu which includes the beer pairing. Did not live up to the hype. Wish we spent our money elsewhere.

We came here on a Friday night, made reservation for 2 at 5:30pm and it was very empty when we arrived. Service was top notch. Interior is simple and elegant. We got Tokyo Tomato and Toasted Rice lager for drinks, and each got the 10 piece nigiri for main, one traditional and one specialty. Tokyo Tomato had a very slight hint of tomato, I'd think for a drink with "tomato" in the name, the tomato flavor should've been a bit more abundant. Toasted rice lager was definitely different, I could taste the toasted rice in after taste. Now when it comes to nigiri, maybe I'm too out of touch as to how pricey omakase is now in the city, but for $115 (and $75 for traditional) and 10 pieces of nigiri, both my husband and I were still hungry. We could've stayed and ordered more from the menu, but we decided to switch to a different restaurant. With one drink and one nigiri selection each, including tax and tip, our total bill came to close $300. This is where the rating is hard. Food was delicious, not super unique among all the other omakase places in the city we've been to previously, but I would've given it a solid 4 had it not been for the price. I understand this is supposed to be a restaurant from an established chef with Michelin stars in Chicago, but the price tag seemed a liiiiittle outrageous given how hungry we still were. Or maybe I'm just getting priced out by the omakase market in the city, who knows.
