*CASH ONLY ALERT*I was really excited to try Mitchell's Soul Food after passing them by several times and reading several rave reviews. I stopped in today to take food for work and I am currently sooo disappointed.I ordered a meatloaf dinner. Here we go...The meatloaf was dried out, definitely stretched with breadcrumbs and completely void of flavor. I asked for gravy all over. I guess they didn't hear me. The macaroni was bland and colorless and the cheese was missing! This mac had all the flavor of a hospital meal that was prepped for a patient on a salt free, seasoning free, flavor free diet. The collard greens tasted frozen maybe??? No specks of meat or flavor of any kind. Mitchell's Soul Food is CASH ONLY and it was nearly empty when I arrived. I can see why.I am unabashedly greedy and also not big on wasting money so I forced it down. Every bite made me sad. The only kinda/sorta "pro" was the low price. Still not worth it. Never again!

Wanted to try this place and went with 3 friends, and was turned away with my certified service animal, I informed them of this and they ask to see my papers, who carries service dog papers, she has her tags. I told told that she was a medical device and they could be sued for turning me away. But I digress, I won't be trying there food ever I guess. I wish I knew a lawyer....I'd give less then 1 star if I could, this is the fourth time I've been told I can't bring my service animal into places. Wtf NY

Are the portions good? Yes.Good service? Sure. (They made a mistake, but gave me the wrong item for free) But that unfortunately doesn't make up for the quality. If you've never had soul food before, then you won't know what you're missing (like enough seasoning, for example). But those with an experienced palate and knowledge that fried fish should be crispy are in for a big disappointment. The prices are cheap, but unfortunately you get what you pay for.

I've ordered twice from this spot and although delivery was always on time etc the food is blah. I had the Rasta pasta more recently and it was a total let down ..

The service and atmosphere at Mitchell's Soul Food restaurant are warm and inviting in a familiar sort of way. The food is good and plentiful. Many times I cannot finish my meal and need to get a doggy bag. Although the waitress could use a little polishing in her presentation and attention to clientele skills, I can overlook that. This is not a high folotting establishment. If you enjoy southern cooking at a reasonable price, you will enjoy Mitchell's.

I have lived in Ny for over 20yrs and tried all of the menu. The chops are my favorite (both ways). Collards, green beans, etc taste southern and home made. Service and ambiance reminds me of small, southern diner where staff will interact w you while your food is being prepared. Just go...Only cash though

The owners of this restaurant are trying to kill the extremely popular Vanderbilt Open Street, claiming that closing off the stretch to cars on weekends has been bad for business. Unfortunately, they seem to have the mayor's ear.https://x.com/2AvSagas/status/1831844738171072933That program saved every other restaurant on that stretch during covid. Mitchell's owns the building, and if they're failing as badly as they claim after four years of being spoonfed food traffic by the city, that's not the program's fault. Also, the fried chicken is dry as hell and has no breading on it. I live down the block from a KFC that's 10 times better.

I lived in Harlem for 10 years and was so excited to try this soul food joint in P heights. I came in to order the fish and shrimp dinner, hyped!Woman taking my order hardly acknowledged me buts it's whatever.. I already know what's up. Not a big deal. The resto smelled a little fishy but I didn't let that deter me. It should have been a warning for me though because babyyyyy when I walked out with that fish, I was down the street when the wind blew and the smell was .. smelling (not in a good way). the place is cash only and i don't really need my $ back but I knew i would probably need to throw it out. But you know when you just REALLY wanted something.. I decided to take it upstairs anyway to see if I could just make it work.. Yall I got in the elevator and was so glad no one was in there with me because FISHY isn't even the word. And it was wrapped up!Yall know I STILL took a bite just to "see something" and that fish tasted like.. metallic. I dunno how to explain it. Like chemicals sort of amoniaish.. I wrapped it tight and threw it down the building trash disposal so fast. Was hoping I'd at least have the sides to rely on.. NOPE. Bland. Im so disappoint because there are NOT many black owned spots in this area anymore and I do badly want there to be. But not like this.. they have to care about the quality of the food, especially fish and meats.

Mitchell's is fantastic. I have lived on the block since 2001 (in the neighborhood since 1997), and feel like they are the last of a bygone era. One we should have profiled when I worked on Parts Unknown: Anthony Bourdain.. as they are the food and lifeblood of the block - and even moreso, of Brooklyn! Homey, welcoming, great portions, characters abound... and a "Ratatouille-mom's.kitchen" memory to almost like time-traveling to childhood! Mithell's brings so much to the table. I cannot recommend it enough!

We are an interracial couple - he's white and I'm Asian. Maybe we should have gotten the hint the first time. We showed up at 7:30 pm on a weekday evening and was told they stopped seating at 7:30 pm. So we came back on a Sunday night at 5:30 pm. We were ignored when we walked into the restaurant. So I asked the waitress if we could choose a table - there were two empty ones. She ignored me and walked right in front of me without saying a thing. Finally my mate asked her where we could sit. At the table I requested two glasses of tap water for us. she never bought them, even though while waiting for the food, I went into a coughing fit, which I finally stopped by putting a cough drop into my mouth. Our fried chicken was skinny and small. The sides were not great. Although the menu said we had a choice of bread, she never asked us our choice, instead, just plunking down corn bread (minus any butter) by our plates. My mate, who had ordered corn on the cob, had to ask for it.My mate finished his meal first. Although I wasn't done, she immediately placed a check next to him even though I wasn't finished. I had been planning to order dessert, but never got a chance to request it.While she was curt with us, she was pleasant to the other tables and apparently in a great mood, singing along with the radio. The waitress cleared my mate's dishes, but not mine when I was done.I looked around the restaurant and thought back to the first time we were there. I realized that during both times, I was the only Asian there. Did others know what I was learning now? When we left, there was no thank you or good-bye.I hear they might have to close. I hope they are replaced with an eatery that is more inclusive.
