I dined here for a friend's birthday, and we ate family style to try a ton of dishes! The service was good; pretty hands off but were close enough that we could get their attention if we needed anything. It was not crowded on a Sunday lunchtime, with plenty of other empty tables. The decor and the space is pretty, and we had the group table by the front window, so we had a lot of natural light! We ordered a LOT of food!Century Egg Salad $18Lotus Meatball $16Farmer's Egg (Stir Fried with Pepper and Pork) $27Winter Melon $19Hengyang Pepper chicken $33Hengyang Flaming Frog $39Cauliflower ($?)Beef Brisket ($?)We had a few low-spice tolerant people in the group (this includes me haha), so we ordered everything mild. It was indeed mild, as in you can taste hints of spice but nothing that made you chug water (unless you accidentally ate the pepper like our friend). I will say that isn't authentically the flavor of Hunan cuisine... it naturally is very spicy, so be sure to let the staff know what spice level you are comfortable with, and they'll accommodate. My recommendations would be the Farmer's Egg, Hengyang chicken, and Beef Brisket.- The Farmer's Egg had a good flavor. - The Hengyang sauce was delicious and yummy. - I would skip the frog dish (also with Hengyang flavoring) as there was not much meat on the pieces of frog, and it was either cartilage or something else that I couldn't chew through so I just left those.- The beef brisket was delicious and tender meat.- Didn't love the curry spice with the cauliflower and didn't enjoy a dish that was what I believe to be chicken gizzard... (at least that's what I was told it was!) It was dark tough pieces of meat.- The Winter Melon was pretty soft, but still good and felt like a palate cleanser (altho it also has a bit of spice).I'm rating 5/5 because of the great experience and great quality food and decent service!! It really helped to have someone familiar with Hunan cuisine to share recommendations. As someone who is not typically a spicy-dish lover, it's not the top of my list, but it's an authentic Hunan restaurant that I'd recommend people to try!

Many Chinese restaurants across America use the word "Hunan" in their names but don't actually serve Hunan food. Even for restaurants that do serve Hunan food, the spicy levels are weak and and they are unable to make it authentically spicy even when requested. There were no such problems here as the food at Hunan Slurp is 100% authentic. I placed a carryout order for Lu Fen. I emphasized to the staff that I wanted maximum spiciness and did not want a version that was served to most American clientele. The staff gave warning that they wouldn't be responsible if it was too spicy and I enthusiastically agreed. On my receipt, they marked the spicy level to "Devil Spicy".It took thirty minutes to fulfill my order but I was willing to endure the wait for an authentic dish that is extremely hard to come by in the US. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with wood interior and bright lighting. There is also an open kitchen where you can observe the staff cooking. I even confirmed with the staff that the chefs were from Hunan. The Lu Fen was absolutely the real deal. It takes a lot of spiciness for me to feel the heat and this dish sufficiently packed enough heat I could feel it. The flavor and ingredients of the dish were super authentic and what you would expect if you had the dish back in Hunan, China.I will definitely come back in the future for a full dine in experience.

Loved this spot for a quick but delicious week night dinner. We ordered the Beef Brisket rice noodles and the fish fillet rice noodles. The only cons were that the fish fillet came without being deboned so it was hard to completely eat a piece without any bones in it along with the beef brisket being a bit too fatty. However both had great flavor and would love to try new dishes here!

This place is amazing! I kept walking by this place on my way home from work and finally decided to try it a couple weeks back. I LOVE the food here! I loved it so much in fact that I actually went back again literally two days later to show my friends! This is the first place in NYC where I actually went back right away instead of mentally putting it away as a "revisit before I move" location.I think I was so compelled to re-visit because the noodles are SO GOOD! I ordered the pork & green pepper the first time, and the spicy beef the second time. They are the right balance between soft and chewy, and they absorb the flavor of the broth so well. At the end of the meal I kept digging around frantically for more noodles until my fingers cramped, and I knew I had to come back to have more of them.I also ordered the chicken with green peppercorn which I really enjoyed. Fair warning -- it was very Sichuan-spicy, and honestly more on the numbing side than the spicy side (although it was still very spicy as well). The flavor was amazing. I would definitely order it again in the future! The one complaint I have about this place is that the wait time for the noodle soup is extremely slow. I think we waited around 30min maybe the second time we went there? The first time, the noodle dishes came after everything else, but we didn't really notice because we got other dishes first. So it's not a quick-bite type of place -- you need to have some patience. But I promise it's worth it!

I always walk by this place, and have made many mental notes on how I need to try it due to the inviting cozy-modern architecture and the crowd who frequents here. They were a Michelin guide recommended restaurant in 2020 and 2021, not sure what happened last year smh. I honestly don't know how that works at all so I could be so ignorant on that. I walked in without a res one evening and was seated immediately. Table for 1 perks. Menu is completely digitized, which has become my major gripe post pandemic but I get it. The menu is a bit confusing on how to navigate and could be improved.I got the Slurp Classic Lu Fen, and it was exactly what I was hoping for. The perfect amount of kick on the spicyness level and just an overall phenomenal combination of flavors.I don't even know how to categorize this noodle dish, but I loved it. There is no broth it is just like a noodle based bowl. I have overdosed on ramen a bit and this was a great switch up.

My second time was actually much better than my first experience. Besides the photos we also had the boneless duck feet and a braised winter melon dish. The chicken is definitely my personal favorite, we ordered medium spicy but think that we could probably go up a bit more. It's also great for taking the leftovers home and make noodles with it. The soft tofu rice noodles were flavorful, on the saltier side. The texture of the tofu made the noodles extra silky. The pickled string bean one could use more soy sauce, we just added the soup at the bottom of the chicken dish to the pickled string bean rice noodles and it tasted much better. Service and speed of service was much faster this time around, we last came here in 2021. And the kitchen had clear glasses so you could see into the actions. I think the only part is that the chairs aren't the most comfortable and it's only stools instead of chairs for the communal table towards the entrance of the place, those are really tough to sit in for a long time... but food is good!

there's not too many genuine hunan restaurants but this place was really good!! we ordered the egg tofu, cauliflower, shredded potato, & this pork dish (supposed to be similar to 少炒肉). my personal favorite was definitely the cauliflower & the egg tofu. the cauliflower was so flavorful and had little thin slices of crispy pork in it... the tofu was so soft and paired perfectly with the rice. the pork dish was also sooo spicy!! i loved it xD the ambiance inside is also super nice and i really enjoyed my experience here.

Came here for lunch at recommendation of friend owing to its appearance in the Michelin Guide albeit they do not have a star, just to clarify. We arrived at the tail end of lunch of a Saturday so the place had emptied out but fortunately that meant no waiting for tables or food to arrive. Everything was quick. Food was very good, though I would say I was completely blown away by the quality. I did enjoy the meal as the dishes were flavorful. Duck Tongue - probably one of the better options, though it could have been a little more salty. Spicy Frog - delicious, great spices used but didn't have the tingly green peppercorns which was fine. Shredded Potatoes were alright, just a plain side dish. Rice Noodles were very good. Overall the food and atmosphere are very nice. A bit more upscale than most other Chinese places.
