Highlights for me were the soba noodles and the oysters - just so refreshing, particularly on a summer day. I also enjoyed the sushi; every piece was so fresh, although the wasabi flavor for a few pieces were a bit strong for my taste. I also got an Ichigo cocktail, which was so delicious and had an interesting peppercorn flavor that actually enhanced the drink. While the omakase spots are hard to come by, will definitely consider coming back to try the omakase experience if I get the chance!"

Everyone was very friendly. This restaurant is unique as it has 2 menus- Asian & Italian. I opted to go Asian but you can order from both. Rock shrimp is my go to and Aqua did not disappoint, generous portion with a delicious creamy spicy sauce on the side. I tried 2 rolls, the fish is very fresh. The crystal sushi is their signature roll, it is very unique, a must try. Very tasty and different. Can't wait to return and try the Italian menu."

One of our party had made it there on time and the gracious host was very nice and sat him at a table a 1/2 hour before we arrived. Luckily, it wasn't extremely busy, just your normal Saturday night. Donburiya is very conveniently located just north of the theater district and just 3 blocks from Carnegie Hall, so is perfect for pre-theater dinner or drinks. It's a very cozy izakaya just a few steps down from street level. If the wait for a table is long, you can opt for a couple of seats at the bar. When we finally arrived, it took us a few minutes to absorb and digest the entirety of the large menu. We started with the Shio cabbage salad and a whole grilled squid. For entrees, my son went with the Sukiyaki Don Set with sliced beef and poached egg & tofu over rice and a miso soup. His friend got the Ishiyaki Beef Curry Udon, which came in a super-hot stone bowl with the broth violently boiling. You can't touch that for a good 10 minutes for it to cool down. My wife went with the Goya Champie, Bitter Melon & Pork topped with a big omelet. For me, it was the Tonkatsu Teppan Yaki Set with a little of everything including a romaine salad topped with potato salad, miso soup, oshinko, rice bowl and Kurobuta pork katsu. The pork cutlet was panko coated, fried to crispy perfection and served over raw cabbage that cooked in the hot mini cast iron skillet right on the table. After I finished and they took away the tray, the table was still hot underneath. We finished in plenty of time for curtain call at Carnegie Hall. I can't wait to come back to relax with a cold Sapporo draft and a non-stop order of fried oysters and karaage."

The pacing of each item was good and I enjoyed the little game they had for the patrons. Each item was executed very well, but my only comment is that there weren't any stand out speciality dishes that set Sushi Lab apart from the many other omakase spots in the city. I feel like the menu is pretty consistent with most of the other spots. I definitely would love to come back, but I do suggest having one really unique stand out dish."

There are a few seats inside the store. The one thing that sold me about this store was that they had brown rice onigiris. Rice, slightly on the healthier side. I ordered two onigiris and a side. The onigiris made me full, and the side was okay. I'll return if I'm in the area, but probably not worth a trek to go to. It was slightly pricey, as onigiri is 95% rice and 5% seasoning"

There was quite the number of food selections to choose from, but luckily their sets with personal names made things easier. My Gozen Brooklyn Set ($26) came with the pork katsu and 2pc Japanese style fried chicken (karaage). Gozen added rice, pork and vegetables to the basic miso soup, and tons of salad. If you're not one to get stuffed easily, Katsu-Hama is going to challenge that. The meal is a lot! The cutlet pieces, crispy, yet juicy on the inside, and the karaage were perfectly tender. It's actually more of a kimbap burrito (= kimburrito?!) & they sell a whole assortment of rolls at Yummy Stick. Depending on the roll you get, prices range from $5 to $13 here. The original $5 burrito is stuffed with crab, fried egg, and rice with seaweed wrapped around, made fresh-to-order. Patrick W. "TLDR: Omakase Room by Shin is quite unassuming but if you're more into traditional omakase, worth a visit. Very unique shari and some nice signature items.Surprised not one person has reviewed this spot but let's break the ice baby. Very unexpected meal but we enjoyed our omakase here very much. They occupy the space that was Kaiseki Room by Yamada. This is a restaurant from The Group. Grand Boucherie, Omakase Room by Mitsu, etc. It's a long very serene bar with lots of wood. For $175, it's a 14-course omakase. While the amount may not seem like much, the pieces are filling and we definitely didn't need extras - although I did get some. The first appetizer was grilled Hokkaido scallop, olive oil and a dab of yuzu kosho. Nice texture, kind of like pen shell but not as chewey. The yuzu kosho went well with the olive oil with the citrusy bit of spice. The second was a chawanmushi with Hokkaido uni. What was interesting is the uni was partially cooked giving it an interesting bouncy like texture to contrast with an incredibly fluffy egg custard. Then your nigiri progression starts. I won't bore you with all the details but the standouts..Madai. Nice firm white fish, a dusting of sudachi zest and such a nice pairing with his shari. His shari is very dark but not quite as sour/salty as you'd think. Good texture and mouth feel.Hagashi toro. This is a very premium cut of toro, typically taken from the top of the tail or the base of the belly. There is a lot of labor taken to remove all the sinew to just leave luscious fatty tuna. This with the shari was absolutely wonderful.Hagashi toro with iburigakko temaki. I thought the nigiri was good but the temaki was even better. The same cut but mixed with iburigakko, pickled and smoked takuan or radish. That crunch and smokiness went perfect to make this a very special hand roll.Hokkaido uni temaki. Not common for you to get something like this but it is packed full and with so much nutty umami flavor.Definitely will be back. Chef was very hospitable and great to chat with. He's been in the game a long time and it shows in his craft. If you've been on the fence, give it a try."

Order up and share plates/drinks.Kenka, located in NYC's East Village, is a pub serving both traditional and modern Japanese cuisine. While walking through St. Mark's Place, the crowd of people gathered at the entrance caught our eyes. We decided to give it a try! There's a clipboard at the front for you to write your name down on the waitlist. Weekends are PACKED, so be prepared. The first notable thing I have to say about this place is that the decor and ambiance are spot on. The entire restaurant is decorated head to toe in Japanese memorabilia. You will really feel like you were transported to an izakaya in Japan. It's loud, a bit rowdy, and very dark in there. Actually, a bit too dark because we were struggling to read the menu. It was also FREEEEEZING COLD... I don't know why they didn't have their heaters blasting on a 15 degree day. Wild.Anyway... we squinted our eyes in the dark as hard as we could to look through the menu. There's a large variety of dishes to choose from, ranging from street-style food to sushi to noodles to grilled meats to seafood to desserts and so on. They also have a full drinks menu with sake, beer, wine, ramune, and milk teas, so you can drink your heart away. Prices are SURPRISINGLY CHEAP! You can definitely order and share a bunch of items tapas style. We ordered:*Tonkatsu (pork cutlet) with curry and rice $9.50 - I was disappointed in this. The breading wasn't crispy or flaky enough and the pork wasn't that tender. I've had much better. The curry was good though; it had the right amount of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. *Yakisoba (stir-fried noodles with pork, squid, vegetables) $8.50 - Skimpy portions of meat and too many vegetables for my liking. They chopped up the squid in pieces that were so small... The noodles were decent, but nothing to rave about.*Miso Ramen $9 - My +1 liked this and finished the whole bowl.*(2) Sake (Japanese rice wine) $9 each - We both got the Junmai sake. This was actually the highlight of the meal! It was strong and refreshing, but went down smoothly with a dry finish. Overall, the food was average and was just enough to fill our bellies when we were starving. The cheap prices made up for it.Service could have been improved. It took awhile for someone to come over to our table once we sat down. Our server didn't introduce himself and wasn't very attentive throughout the dinner. After we placed our initial order, we didn't see him until it was time for the check. I understand that they're super busy, but that doesn't excuse lackluster or poor service. When we got the check, we were also given small cups of these pink powder mixes. We had NO IDEA what this was... we even googled it lol. We wanted to wait and ask our server, but didn't want to be stuck waiting there in the cold restaurant any longer. It wasn't until I did my research later on... The pink powder they give you is a COTTON CANDY MIX! They have a machine at the front of the restaurant where you can make your own for free. That's such a cute idea and a sweet way to end a meal. I wish they would have just told us because we would never have figured it out. Oh well."

Taisho is a great late night eats and drink spot, serving a huge variety of Japanese foods in NYC. The space inside is tight and loud, and the atmosphere is busy and energetic, which is an authentic izakaya experience if you ask me. The menu here is pages upon pages long that it can get overwhelming deciding what to order with the variety they offer. Great to come with a group of 4 if possible to try different foods, however most tables here are for 2. We got a whole feast during our most recent visit: teriyaki chicken, steak, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, grilled mackerel, takowasabi, unagi and egg over rice, galbi, fried rice, chicken karaage, and a lot of yakitori (meats on skewers). Late night hours and yakitori keep this Japanese joint bustling!"

Glenn C. "Side note: Please sell those croquettes separately from the duck dish. I'd go back just to buy those.I was at this unique Japanese New American restaurant with a small group having hosted that day for once. As per recent reviews, I went here a while ago and I'm using prices from back then but I don't think there's been that many changes outside of most of the dishes costing an extra dollar compared to before. The staff was friendly and I liked the inside of the place. It wasn't too loud in there even when a lot of people arrived and the food overall was excellent with some particularly good dishes. To drink I had the namesake Lingo, their Apple Sazerac with Akashi Japanese whiskey, LeMorron calvados, sakura bitters, and absinthe for $18. It was drier than the usual sazerac and had a pleasant light apple flavor. We soon got two of our smaller plates. The Hokkaido Milk Bread for $7 listed as freshly baked daily with hickory smoked sake butter was delicious. It had a soft pull-apart texture and the butter indeed had a slight smoky flavor. We ordered an extra bread eventually as we liked it so much.Pretty tasty was the Crispy Cauliflower for $17 with lime curry crema, soy glaze, and beni shoga pickled ginger. The cauliflower had a nice light fry with some citrusy zest to it. While I am not the biggest fan of gari/pickled ginger, it worked here. This was fine but less notable.Soon arriving enough was one our main dishes. My favorite of the bunch was probably the Crescent Duck A L'Yuzu for $41 listed as our take a on a classic duck a l'orange, duck leg katsu croquette, roasted duck breast, caramelized endive, umeboshi date puree, and pickled rhubarb. The duck while not the biggest piece was perfectly cooked and had a little bit of a citrus flavor. The endive in the middle had a wonderful texture and the croquette was delicious on the side with a soft fry and was very juicy. They get honestly sell the croquettes alone as either a fancy bar snack or appetizer or something to go and I think that would be a big hit.For the same price at $41 was the Lingo Beef Pie listed as a Hokkaido style braised beef curry with bone marrow and burnt rosemary. We partially decided to go here for this dish and it was good though not as good as I expected. The presentation is striking but it was odd that there wasn't any bone marrow within said bone as I think the marrow had gone into the curry. The crust of the pie was outstanding but I found the actual curry compared to most Japanese curries I've had to be way too thin and a bit less flavorful. I'm not sure if it's because I'm used to Go Go and other spots but the curry here was almost watery. If the curry was stronger and thicker, I think that this would have been excellent as the beef was very tender. The rosemary which is burnt at the table was a fun touch as well.Surprisingly good was the Smoked Pork Belly Kakuni for $28 listed as a soy 5hr slow braised duroc pork, fuji apple, edamame, and pickled mustard seeds. The pork belly was bigger than expected though I do usually see kakuni on izakaya menus or other spots as a small plate so I guess the bigger portion makes sense. The pork was tender and fatty but the combination of the apple and mustard seeds helped to reduce the overall richness. This was excellent and I would highly recommend it to share at least. We also got an order of the Crispy Potato Mille-Feuille for $18 with dashi cream, tobiko caviar, and chives which was no ordinary potato side dish and was an unexpected highlight. I absolutely loved the texture of the potato and the bit of cream and caviar on the side help to cut the richness. The portion size was good also and I would in short heavily recommend this as well. Outside of perhaps the beef pie which was a little bit disappointing mostly because of our high expectations and the cauliflower which was just alright, everything else was very tasty. If I was in the area, I would go back and try a lot more of their dishes. We liked 5 of the 7 dishes a ton and that's a rarity. Mid 4."

The restaurant is a cozy place you can take your friends or a date to for a meal or sake based cocktails. I came here since it was my friend's birthday and appreciated the food they had to offer. The salty pork belly was soft and worked very well with the sauce. The tofu fire was a little spin on agedashi tofu, except it was thicker and created with a chili sauce. It had a slight kick to it but was not spicy at all, despite the name. The karaage was perfectly seasoned, and I liked the sauce that came with it, but eating it by itself was also delicious. For the entree, I chose the Yakiniku Don. It's basically a Gyudon, which is made from thinly sliced beef and created with a sweet soy sauce base. I have eaten from this place countless times. Do they do a suspicious variety of various Asian ethnic cuisines? Yes. It's a little weird to be able to get Thai, Chinese, and Japanese from one restaurant. Is it a cheap neighborhood option? You bet your wallet. You can't beat these prices. It may not be the most freshest, pinkest salmon you've ever eaten, but if you wanted that, you'd haul your butt to Sugarfish in Manhattan. Lunch special prices are incredible. I can't speak to the Thai food (see below), but the sushi is great and the teriyaki bento boxes are a good deal. I have never had problems with fish quality in terms of getting sick, which I can't say for every neighborhood place. However, the real hidden gem of this restaurant is their Thai tea. It's real thai tea made with condensed milk and spices, and you can get a relatively large cup of it with no ice for $3.50. I have never seen this cheaper than $6 in a Manhattan restaurant, and most of the time it has ice in it, so there's even less than what you would get here. The interior is not pretty, but I've also never seen anyone eat there. I think the neighborhood and the restaurant both have accepted this place makes food just for pickup or delivery, not dine-in. And that's okay! But if you choose to eat here in person, don't hold it against them. Much to our pleasant surprise, they still offered the lunch special sets on weekends as well, so my friend and I both ordered the 'premium pork cutlet set', one with the loin and one with fatback. The set comes with so much food - and all so delicious. The shredded cabbage was so fresh and went so nicely with the dressing (not the usual sesame dressing, though). The butajiru was one of the best miso broths I've ever had in the US, and all the veggies and pork were so juicy and flavourful in the soup. The potato salad and pickled veggies on the side were really yummy, too.As for the pork itself, by now it should be unsurprising that it was amazing. The meat was fragrant and savoury throughout, and cooked to a perfect texture, and as they explain in depth it's fully cooked despite its colour, simply because of the duration/temperature at which they cook the katsu. The breading was lovely - not too oily and didn't fall off too easily - with its crispiness contrasting wonderfully with the tenderness of the pork. All this for only ~$25 per person (incl tax/tip)? I'm honestly so peeved with myself for not having come by before (it's been on my list for months, too!), but at least I got to enjoy one lovely meal before they're gone forever :')"

That yellowtail tastes like it www caught today, while the jalapeño is kindly deveined and deseeded yet incredibly juicy and crunchy. This roll, as with the others, is well packed in a bountiful and yet organized way. Spicy White Tuna Roll (5/5): Holy macaroni. This is the best spicy/crunchy roll of any sushi joint I've tried in the city. The tuna is ultra fresh and the spicy crunchy tempura part is actually really crunchy and not soggy like most places do; and it's flavorful nature was genuinely not expected and I'm the opposite of disappointed. Alaska Mak (5/5): This large 5-piece roll really threw me off at first glance but checked all the boxes and then some. The cucumber crunches, the avocado is creamy, the salmon fresh as can be. Salmon Skin Salad (4/5): There is an abundance of salmon skin in this salad. The rest is mostly lettuce and a sprinkle of shaved carrot and cucumber pieces. Would have been nice for more veg other than the lettuce. But let me tell you how good the dressing is -- it's a carrot gingery burst of flavor I wouldn't trade for anything and they give you two containers generously. Edamame (4/5): Well cooked but no salt so this the minus one. Vegetable Miso Soup (3/5): The blend of vegetables here was fine and the broth is nothing to write home about. Mostly lettuce (why?), some broccoli and carrot plus tofu chunks. Spinach and Tofu Soup (4/5): This soup is exactly what it promises to be. The clear broth is tasty but plain -- which I guess this should be. The spinach and tofu are exactly what you would expect. Checks the box. TL;DR: While this place doesn't have soups or edamame I would rave over, the rolls and fish (in the rolls and salad) are my new all time favorites in NY. 100% on the repeat list."

But as a petite 5'2'' asian woman, the serving size was perfect for me! Love, love, love this spot! I plan on coming back here every time I go to NYC a few times a year for work!"

Sarah Y. "Super cozy and delicious food! We got a table in their backyard area, but it had heaters and was still pretty warm, though I sat by the door which kept opening, so it was cold. We went on a 28 degree day, and got the first hotpot option with their signature soup, and felt great in the cold weather. We also got the salmon and signature roll. Both were solid. We got athe asahi beer and Yuzu sake as well. The sake tasted like juice and was pretty sweet. Service was also pretty good, they served our first bowl of soup. The soup was a little salty though, so definitely get rice with it!I will say this meal ended up being $70/person, which is quiteeee pricey"

Julie C. "This is my first time at this particular location in the city but I can confidently say that Kazunori never disappoints because I know exactly what to expect every time I visit. The food is consistently great across all locations, with fresh, high-quality seafood that's always a hit. I appreciate that there's no reservation system so it's first come, first served, which makes the experience feel more laid-back and easygoing.Whether you're in the mood for their signature hand rolls or something else on the menu, you can always count on a satisfying meal. A reliable spot that delivers every time!"

Alec L. "Extremely underrated place to dine (in person).Fast service, fantastic fresh fish at a great value.High quality service.Mostly I order the fish but everything else I've had is great from the edamame to the miso eggplant or the tofu dishes. New York knows this place rocks, you'll see a pound of fish going out the door on delivery bikes every 10 minutes. But getting to sit in and eat it truly fresh is a great experience."

Trung T. "Oh man this place was SO GOOD! The Miyazaki beef (above the wagyu) was the most tender beef we've ever eaten...and dipped in the raw egg was just pure perfection! Our waiter cooked and served our first couple of slices of the beef for us and then we were on our own the rest of the meal, but we were well taken care of. The size and spacing of the tables is a bit tight, but they do offer storage bins below your chair to save on space for coats/purses. Highly recommend this for an upscale dinner!!"
