Beef Wellington! I came here for the Beef Wellington. (Not a lot of places offer BW) I wasn't sure if they had it because i saw it in pictures but not on menu pictures. But they had it! It was good. Not great. I wouldn't order it again. You can't choose the temperature (which is normal and expected for BW) or the size. It was waaay too big for me. It was enough for two. The gravy it came with was excellent. But the whole thing in general felt like it came frozen from Costco - lacking taste. The puff pastry was neither light nor puffy. It was more like pie dough. It came with charred broccolini which was acrid...and some microgreens which I didn't eat. Everything looked beautiful tho.I ordered the Winter Solstice mocktail, which was EXCELLENT. It was my favorite part of the meal.Didn't love the dessert options so I didn't order. Instead of dessert, I ordered a single espresso and received a double.I loved the atmosphere and ambiance with rustic white birch firewood stacked about throughout the restaurant. The bathrooms were a positive 5* experience. Four individual, uni-sex locking bathrooms. Very private and well maintained.I will come back because I want to try the short ribs!

We enjoyed a nice dinner at Butter Midtown early-ish on a Friday night recently. The restaurant is below street level but feels very open and spacious. It seemed like majority of tables were nice, big booths which were very comfortable. Attentive, friendly service. We enjoyed the Parker House Rolls, Cavatappi pasta and chargrilled octopus as starters. We then shared the Beef Wellington. Everything we tried was delicious. We aren't in the neighborhood often so not sure when we'll be back, but we give this a solid recommend for the neighborhood (can't recall the names of our drinks but they were tasty!)

Looked forward to this as a longtime fan of Chef Alex. Made reservations the second I could to celebrate my partner David's birthday. Had to wait 10 minutes or so for our table even though we were there at 5:00 on the dot. Rolls were delicious as advertised, as was the foie gras. We ordered short rib, gnocchi, penne with lamb sausage and our server recommended the house salad. EVERYTHING including salad was brought together so while we were eating the salad everything else was getting cold. I asked our server and she said "I thought you were sharing everything" which we were but not all at the same time!!? I can't remember this ever happening at a restaurant this expensive and highly rated. Very amateur hour. Short rib was a giant chunk of almost entirely fat. Virtually inedible. Gnocchi was awesome. Penne w/lamb sausage delicious. Salad was meh. For $23. Beignets for dessert were ok, but the server put the bill on the table just a few seconds after we got the dessert, obviously pushing us out the door. Oh, also / NOTHING EVER mentioned about our birthday celebration even tho I mentioned it on the reservation website and they confirmed by text. Nothing. We had eaten at Craft the night before and had a personalized menu and a chefs dessert to commemorate so just highlighted the lack of care here. I've looked forward to eating at Butter for YEARS but damn I'm crossing it off my list forever. Very disappointing.

I've known of Butter for a long time - having Alex Guarnaschelli as your executive chef and being on Restaurant Row puts you in a position to be one of the more well-known restaurants in NYC. I first dined at butter almost 10 years ago for my birthday, and though I hadn't been back I remember it being a good experience and kept it in the back of my mind. I had made plans to see a show, and since it let out relatively early I thought it would be a good idea to grab dinner here, so off we went. Typical of midtown restaurants, Butter is relatively spacious - it actually sits on the lower level of the space it occupies, so upon entry you're greeted by stairs. Once you descend, the aesthetics are very nice - there's a small lounge in the main lobby area and once you walk into the dining room you're greeted by a very open space with a combination of booths and tables. The setting is intimate and upscaleish with medium woods and low lighting. The majority of the menu is New American fare - with a selection of snacks, apps, mains, and sides. We decided to start with two apps - the burrata and the gnocchi mac and cheese. Both of these were good - the gnocchi was paired with slices of squash in a tasty sauce; the mac and cheese was rich without being too heavy and topped with breadcrumbs to add some texture. For my main I had the salmon; I enjoyed this - it was topped with roe and paired with a tasty sauce on top of potatoes. We also got a side of chilled potato salad to share which was prepared in a cream-based mustard sauce. I'm normally not a fan of potato salad because of the mayo but this was a welcome alternative while still being kind of creamy. We opted for dessert and I went with the gala apple which was stuffed with bread pudding and pared with gingersnap ice cream. I really enjoyed that - perfect for the season. Also, the coffee was excellent. Service was pretty good, though there were a few things that made me go hmm. Specifically, they were out of one of the items on the menu as well as one of the cocktails which was odd to me seeing that it was a Saturday night in the middle of the holiday season. Also, my dad ordered ice cream for dessert - it came with an option for one scoop for $7 or three scoops for $14. My dad asked if he could get two scoops which they said yes to, however failed to mention that they would charge him for two single scoops; to top it off, they served it to him in two separate dishes - what is that all about? Overall, Butter is a solid restaurant - you'll get a good meal here and I'm glad I returned to rediscover it. I would be open to dining here again, but with all the other restaurants in the city I'm not running back.

Food: best Wellington I've ever had. Gnocchi was super pillowy. Service: fast and efficient ambiance: classic americano feel. This restaurant was on my list to a very long time as I am a long time and huge fan of Alex. Her restaurant exceeded my expectations.

I visited the other location half a dozen years ago and had a bad experience but decided to give Alex's place another shot. I came here solo and was quickly seated. Nobody looked twice at my tshirt and jeans which I'd been worried about. Service was quick. I ordered a Ghost Margarita, a "snack" of fois gras and an appetizer size of grilled octopus. The fois gras came out first and was quite delightful. Once I finished that dish, the octopus quickly followed. The dishes were well timed. The octopus was perfectly charred without a hint of rubbery texture which it can often get. Both dishes were well worth getting. The server was just the right amount of attentive and almost even convinced me to take a look at the desserts without being pushy. I'm definitely glad I gave Butter another try.

Amazing dining experience. The ambiance was great, the restaurant itself is huge with high ceilings and well thought out decor. Overall the food was also very well prepared. We did wait roughly 30 mins so I wouldn't say service was prompt but well worth the wait.

We had a nice meal here and the ambiance was cool and very convenient to our hotel and we are big Alex fans but it wasn't amazing. It was good, same as the last time I dined here. The two appetizers we ordered were excellent, the Burrata and the Baby Carrot salad. The carrot salad was one of my top 3-5 dishes on our three day NYC trip. It was so unique and delicious and prefect to share, although I'm not sure I could have eaten the whole thing. The Parkerhouse rolls were fine but slow to come out and just ok. Our entrees were all solid but pretty basic all things considered. We had the salmon dish and the branzino dish and the Mac and cheese gnocchi and both fish dishes were fine but nothing more and dishes we could find anywhere. The chocolate cake was huge and also delicious, not too sweet. Our service was fine but not great. So overall good but I likely won't go back because there are too many other great food options in midtown.

The servers here are so kind and hospitable. My partner and I come at least once or twice a year for special occasions. When we celebrated an anniversary they were so easy for our friends who wanted to surprise us with a bottle of champagne for dinner. The Parkerhouse rolls are amazing as are the steak and the pork chop.

Walked in at 5:15 & ran right into Alex Guarnaschelli. Wow! Was a solo diner as my BFF was ill but had an amazing pre-theater dinner. Love the photos & wood paneling. The leather booths are so comfy! Amazing!
