Truthfully, American food is never my favorite but my boyfriend and I decided to check Au Cheval out for a late Valentine's Day celebration and it did not disappoint. The service was excellent (water ALWAYS filled), the ambiance was classy while maintaining a level of cozy and the food was the best American we've had in the city. Again, American food will never be my favorite but if it's yours, this is the place to be. My personal rankings:1. The General Jane's Fried Chicken Appetizer2. The Cheeseburger with egg added on 3. The Shaved Prime Rib SandwichMy boyfriend's rankings:1. The Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich2. The Cheeseburger with egg added on 3. The General Jane's Fried Chicken Appetizer

Au Cheval in NYC delivers a solid burger experience, but for those who've had the original in Chicago, it doesn't quite hit the same highs. The signature burger is still rich, indulgent, and well-executed, but something about the balance of flavors and textures feels just a bit off compared to the Windy City location.Service was efficient, though a bit more transactional than the warm, attentive hospitality I've experienced in the original. Still a nice cozy atmosphere.Overall, it's a good spot for a high-quality burger in NYC, but if you've been to the Chicago location, you might find yourself wishing you had booked a flight instead. I'm going to give the NY location another try in the future but for now it was good, just not as good as Chicago.

Being from Chicagoland and trying the NYC location first is probably crazy but hey, I was able to get a reservation so here we go.... Service was great and attentive ...I had the double cheeseburger with the black pepper macaroni and cheese.- cheeseburger- the texture of the burger/bun/bacon was nice a tender. I wasn't a big fan of the 'American Sharp Cheddar.' I would prefer a more flavorful cheese (tillamook Sharp cheddar or white cheddar etc). The burger is OK, I will say it's nothing to anticipate having. - Black Pepper Mac n Cheese - it was good. Nice and hot with bacon and quite a bit of black pepper with a crusted top. Not something you should eat daily but def something to try .You can get a better burger for cheaper, but I would recommend if it's on your bucket list.*Note - the bacon is thick but very fatty. I think there was more fat than meat on the slices we had.

My favorite restaurant, exclamation point. No period.Hiding in an obscure alley sandwiched between graffitied metal shutters, delivery trucks, and fake Gucci purses, this high-ceilinged restaurant full of darkened wood and exposed brick is part bar and grill, part lounge, and part underground speakeasy. Fancy without the pretense, upscale without the dress code, nice without being stuffy, it's very dark, the only lights coming from the wedding lights in the coffee shop lobby, some Haunted Mansion chandeliers, and the steaks that are literally on fire.My wife prefers the elegance and civility of sitting at a table, but we sat at the "bar", in quotation marks for being less a bar and more the tiny front row to the kitchen show, featuring chefs and bartenders executing orders like elves in a workshop, browning the mac and cheese, igniting the steaks, charring huge heads of broccoli, and slathering various dishes with a paint brush full of garlic butter. The ambiance and Midwestern service are so good they could serve expired Lunchables and still be amazing, but the food is excellent. Though they found fame in Chicago for their double burger, we got a bunch of sides. The fried chicken sliders were yummy but they go down quick (9 bites), with soft brioche, creamy dijonnaise, light and crispy chicken, tart pickle). The rich macaroni and cheese is the best I've had in a restaurant- baked until the top is crispy. The chopped wedge salad is a big bowl of crispy iceberg well-dressed with a muted ranch, with seasoned hard boiled egg, generous chunks of gorgonzola, and super-lean cubes of the best maple and black pepper bacon I've had (dethroning the gold standard Sides and Red Barn in Santa Barbara County).. We ended with a huge $19 slice of chocolate cream pie with an Oreo crust and a gorilla's fistful of vanilla whipped cream. It's great, but a little too rich for me, not at all creamy, but much more dense and fudgey, like a stack of six, slightly-melted chocolate bars. Da bars!

So today, I had a phenomenal experience at Au Cheval. We made reservations earlier in the week which I highly suggest this place gets pretty packed for dinner. After just waiting for a few minutes, we were taking to our table. And we were greeted by several staff members, which in my opinion, create a welcoming environment. Our waitress, Ariana P. was so friendly and personable. And being that this was our first time, Ariana helped us navigate through the menu. And now for the food. The hamburger by far reign supreme. And all the sides were perfect the french fries come with a garlic aïoli dipping sauce, which was delicious the mac & cheese was cooked to perfection ( cheesy, and black pepper are the notes in this side ) and the whipped mashed potatoes is a must have. Also, my sisters and I are huge fans of sweet tea and the staff went out of their way to make sure that our sweet tea was definitely the southern sweet tea that we were craving. This place is a must visit for locals as well as out-of-towners.

I've been to a lot of great places, but nothing compares to the consistently amazing experience I have at Au Cheval locations, especially the one in New York City. My first visit was actually at their Chicago spot, and I was instantly obsessed. Since then, every time I'm in New York, it's a must-stop for me, no matter if it's a quick hangover cure or a fun date night with my partner. The vibe, service, and food are always on point. Now let's talk about the burger... it's probably my "death row" bite lol. I'm a huge fan of all burgers, but this one is a whole different level. It's juicy, packed with flavor, and topped with a perfectly cooked egg. It's classic, comforting, and honestly, just so delicious. And those fries? Top them off with that incredible sauce, and it's a total game changer. Every bite is like a chef's kiss.I also have to shout out the steak tartare, always fresh, always perfect. I just love everything about this spot. The combination of amazing food, great atmosphere, and top-tier service makes it one of my all-time favorite places. Can't wait for my next visit!

Returned for dinner years later with a reservation (sucked it up and paid the non-refundable $5) and am pleased to report this place holds up. My boyfriend and I shared the chopped wedge, double cheeseburger, French fries and mille feuille. My body truly cannot handle the cream in mille feuille these days, but it was so worth it.

I heard massive praise about this burger here. I typically don't order bacon or eggs with my burger but I heard people say it's a must to get it. Most expensive burger I have ever had. It was about 34 for the burger, bacon and egg. The fries were $15. The fries were the biggest rip off. Regular tasting fries for $15 is crazy. The beef was super tender and definitely was nice. The bun was so soft. The egg really had an impact on it too. The bacon though contributed nothing for me. It was so fatty and I'm moreso a fan of crispy bacon. If you pay online they charge you an extra 1.50. For reservations you have to pay 2.50 too. All in all, it's just way too expensive. If I were to go back, I'd just get the burger with egg and no bacon and no fries.

The food was delicious, and it was pretty close to our hotel, 50 Bowery. The burger with thick cut, fatty bacon was incredible. We also had the mac and cheese, which might be the best I've ever had..it was really cheesy. The chicken was also possibly the best Korean fried chicken I've ever had. This place is a 10/10 in every aspect, from food and service to staff and ambiance.

Came here for dinner since we were around the area. Did not know it was so well known for its burger until we got in and skimmed through the reviews so we figured we should definitely get it. As it was a last minute decision, we didn't have reservations and but were able to eat at the bar.Is it NYC's best burger? Honestly, not hitting it for me. It's ok - we got the burger with the additional supplements that add up to about an extra $10 for the egg ($3) and bacon ($7), on top of the burger price ($23) for $33 total. It was really just a burger with cheese, bacon, and an egg. In the end, we're glad we got all the supplements so that we won't have to wonder if we missed out from getting the full experience. Just had a burger at Manhatta earlier this week that I thought was also ok but now looking back in comparison with this one, I think was better than this one. Maybe it's just me - everyone else seems to rave about this burger. Not saying it's bad - just don't think it's really the #1 burger our city can offer. The mac and cheese was pretty good. The macaroni is on the larger side but it doesn't take away from how cheesy and creamy it is. The top layer of cheese has a slight crust/crisp in contrast to the inner part. I liked the mac and cheese a lot. Had a good flavor, very savory. The key lime pie is topped with a generous serving of whipped cream which is very light and fluffy and only mildly sweet. The pie itself was also on the sweeter side but not overly sweet. Atmosphere is nice though. The first floor seems like could be a very nice first date location. The basement is a bit darker and quieter - more of a private bar scene. The bar itself on the first floor has ample room and view of the cooking and quite lively. Service overall is not bad either. If I were to come back, would consider getting the mac and cheese and the key lime pie again.
