The Treme is a neighborhood of great importance to New Orleans as the first African American Catholic Church in New Orleans built in the mid-1800's which still stands today. The New Orleans African American Museum is also located here, as is the Backstreet Cultural Museum. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans. I like this neighborhood a lot for its small cafe's, museums and this creepy feeling of being haunted. The New Orleans African American Museum has a project to revitalize the area and to mark the history. They are doing great work for the area. There are some spots that seem out of place here, like a juice bar.

We had the pleasure of staying in a hotel which bordered Tremé and the French quarter. This is a very lovely, quaint historical African-American/Croele neighborhood. There are many cultural centers within this neighborhood to remind us and the inhabitants of its beginnings. This also borders the Louis Armstrong public park right around the corner. I found this neighborhood to be very peaceful and comfortable to walk around in. There's a cute little cozy café within this neighborhood that many locals and a few stray tourists from the French quarter visit every now and then. This neighborhood is filled with a lot of original old style houses marvel at. We got to visit the tomb of the unknown slave which came with an educational plaque to read about its history. At the time that we had visited, there appears to be a full renovation of a couple of entire blocks/rows of homes/buildings within the neighborhood for a huge heritage revival construction project. This neighborhood has been placed more so on the popular map after the show Tremé by HBO was filmed here a few years ago. Though the show has been around for a while, I have never seen it and now would like to watch the show after my visit. It was a pleasure being able to visit this neighborhood.

Treme is not the destination for most tourists in New Orleans. It's the seedier, poorer part of town where the homes are smaller, and not as well-kept as homes in other areas. You probably won't feel safe, but I didn't at all feel threatened while taking a morning run through the area. This is the home of Willie Mae's and Dooky Chase's, where you'll get the best friend chicken you've ever tasted! It's also the setting for HBO's television drama that bears the same name.
